Time of Organization
The Dam Boat Racing Festival is held annually from the 9th to the 11th day of the third lunar month in Dam Village. The 9th day marks the opening of the festival with processions and ritual ceremonies. The boat races mainly take place on the 10th and 11th, attracting large numbers of locals and visitors.
According to traditional practice, the festival follows a cycle: in even-numbered years, there are grand processions, while in odd-numbered years only smaller-scale rituals are held. Every five years, during an even-numbered year, a major festival is आयोजित, featuring the Dam boat race that reenacts the naval combat tactics of General Dao Truong.
Throughout the festival, the sound of village drums echoes from early morning, signaling the start of festivities. After the completion of rituals around midday, villagers and visitors gather along the riverbank to watch the lively boat races.
Location
The Dam Boat Racing Festival takes place in Dam Village, Tay Tuu Ward, Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi. This is an ancient area in the northwest of the capital, long known for its flower cultivation and traditional cultural activities.
The boat race is held on a branch of the Nhue River, also known as Thuy Giang (Pheo River), flowing through the village. This stretch of river is nearly 1 km long and about 100 meters wide, making it suitable for organizing boat races.
The spiritual center of the village is Tay Tuu Communal House (Dam Communal House), dedicated to the tutelary deity Bach Hac Tam Giang Dao Truong. The communal house was built during the Le Dynasty, thanks to Nguyen Thi Tinh, a royal consort of Emperor Le The Tong and a native of Dam Village. Despite multiple restorations, it remains the main site for the festival’s rituals.
The communal house features a spacious courtyard with small two-story, eight-roofed pavilions at its four corners. At the end of the courtyard stands the outer sanctuary, facing a village pond. A central axis pathway leads from there to the inner sanctuary, where the sacred altar is placed. The structures reflect traditional Vietnamese architecture, with curved roofs, upturned eaves, and intricate decorative motifs.
History
The Dam Boat Racing Festival is a long-standing traditional festival of Dam Village, dating back to the 15th century. It is associated with the worship of Saint Bach Hac Tam Giang Dao Truong, a general credited with defending the country during the Hung Kings era. The local people revere him as their tutelary deity and hold the festival annually to honor his contributions.
In addition, according to traditional beliefs, the festival also serves as a ritual offering to the Tam Giang water deity, who governs water sources and supports agricultural production. Thus, the festival carries the meaning of praying for favorable weather, abundant harvests, and peaceful lives.
Historically, the festival was also known as a training ground for swimming and rowing skills among village youths. Several notable naval commanders, such as Nguyen Huu Liem of the Later Le period and Do Dac Lien in the 19th century, were once skilled rowers in this festival before becoming military leaders.
During the period of resistance against the French and until 1994, the festival was interrupted. Since its revival in 1994, it has been increasingly organized on a larger scale. Today, the festival is recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Rituals (Ceremonial Section)
The ceremonial part of the festival takes place solemnly at Tay Tuu Communal House. On the 9th day of the third lunar month, villagers organize a procession to bring the Saint from the Upper Shrine to the communal house. The procession moves through village roads with full ceremonial regalia, flags, and the participation of many villagers.
When the palanquin arrives, elders and young men carry the sacred throne into the main hall. This is followed by a formal ritual conducted by the council of elders. During the ceremony, villagers and visitors prepare offerings to present at the altar, expressing respect and praying for peace and prosperity.
After the rituals at the communal house, the palanquin is carried to the riverside pavilion (Thuy Ta). There, it is placed facing the water. The sound of gongs, drums, and firecrackers signals that the Saint has taken position and also marks the preparation for the boat race.
Festival Activities (Festive Section)
The highlight of the festival is the boat race on the Pheo River. Traditionally, Dam Village consists of three hamlets—Thuong, Trung, and Ha—each sending two boats, making a total of six racing boats. In addition, there is one official boat responsible for supervising the race.
The racing boats are usually made of high-quality wood, about 15 meters long, with dragon-shaped carvings at both the bow and stern, painted in red lacquer and gilded beautifully. Each boat carries about 25 members, including the main steersman, assistant steersman, drummer, flag bearer, bailer, pole handler, and 18 rowers.
The rowers are carefully selected, typically aged between 20 and 35, physically strong and experienced. Before the festival, they undergo training and practice together to prepare for the competition.
When the starting signal is given, the boats surge forward across the water amid drumbeats and enthusiastic cheers from spectators. The synchronized rowing, splashing water, and racing boats create a vivid and energetic scene.
The race usually consists of multiple rounds. The winning boat earns the honor of carrying the Saint’s throne from the riverside pavilion back to the Upper Shrine.
In addition to boat racing, the festival also features various folk activities such as human chess, wrestling, cockfighting, bird releasing, and exhibitions of products from Tay Tuu flower village. The vibrant atmosphere attracts large crowds of locals and visitors.
The Dam Boat Racing Festival is not only an occasion to commemorate ancestral merits but also a way to preserve cultural traditions, strengthen community bonds, and educate younger generations about pride in their homeland.

Periode d’organisation
