Tiền quân Thống chế Điều bát Nguyễn Văn Tồn sinh năm Quý Mùi (1763), quê tại làng Nguyệt Lãng, huyện Vĩnh Bình, nay thuộc xã Bình Phú, huyện Càng Long, tỉnh Trà Vinh.
Năm Gia Long thứ 10 (1811), nhờ công lao giữ yên bờ cõi, ông được phong hàm Thống chế, tước Dung Ngọc Hầu.

Overview of the Festival
The Lang Ong Tra On Festival is one of the most representative traditional festivals of the Mekong Delta region. It is held at the Mausoleum of Tien Quan Thong Che Dieu Bat Nguyen Van Ton, located in My Hoa Hamlet, Thien My Commune, Tra On District, Vinh Long Province. This communal festival of the Kinh, Khmer, and Hoa (Chinese) ethnic groups takes place annually on the 3rd and 4th days of the first lunar month to commemorate the merits of Tien Quan Thong Che Dieu Bat Nguyen Van Ton, a distinguished military commander who contributed significantly to reclaiming wasteland, safeguarding the southwestern frontier, and fostering ethnic solidarity in the regions of Tra On, Cau Ke, and Mang Thit.
The mausoleum is situated on Thanh Bach Sandbank, about 2 kilometers from Tra On Town. It serves both as the burial site and the place of worship for Nguyen Van Ton and his wife. The complex was originally built in 1820 and underwent several restorations in 1937, 1953, 1960, 1963, 1967, 1992, 1994, 1997, and 2004, while still retaining its ancient and solemn appearance. On February 13, 1996, the Ministry of Culture and Information recognized the site as a National Historical and Cultural Relic. Subsequently, on January 22, 2020, the Lang Ong Tra On Festival was inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List under Decision No. 261/QĐ-BVHTTDL.
More than merely a death anniversary ceremony for a historical figure, the festival also serves as an occasion to pray for blessings at the beginning of the new year, wishing for national prosperity, favorable weather, abundant harvests, and peaceful, prosperous lives. Through generations, Nguyen Van Ton has been revered by local people as a tutelary deity who protects the community of Tra On.
The Honored Figure: Tien Quan Thong Che Dieu Bat Nguyen Van Ton
Tien Quan Thong Che Dieu Bat Nguyen Van Ton was born in the Year of the Goat (1763) in Nguyet Lang Village, Vinh Binh District, present-day Binh Phu Commune, Cang Long District, Tra Vinh Province. He was an ethnic Khmer whose birth name was Thach Duong, courtesy name Duyen, and was commonly known among local people as Ta Duong.
In his youth, he joined and supported Lord Nguyen Anh and made many contributions to the process of national reunification. When Nguyen Anh was forced into exile in Siam (present-day Thailand) in 1787 due to attacks by the Tay Son forces, Nguyen Van Ton accompanied him. Upon returning to Vietnam, he was assigned to recruit militia forces in Tra Vinh, Mang Thit, Cau Ke, and Tra On. In addition to organizing defense forces for the southwestern region, he also encouraged local people to reclaim land, establish settlements, and develop new villages.
After Nguyen Anh ascended the throne in 1802 under the reign title Gia Long, Nguyen Van Ton was appointed Cai Co and Commander of the Naval Forces stationed in Tra On under Tran Giang Commandery. He continued to contribute to stabilizing the southwestern frontier, resisting incursions from Siamese forces, and improving the livelihoods of settlers in newly developed lands.
In the tenth year of Gia Long’s reign (1811), in recognition of his achievements in safeguarding the borders, he was promoted to the rank of Thong Che and granted the noble title Dung Ngoc Hau. In 1819, he was appointed Dieu Bat Nhung Vu and led laborers and soldiers to Chau Doc to assist Thoai Ngoc Hau in excavating the Vinh Te Canal, a project of great strategic significance for transportation and national defense in southern Vietnam. Due to the immense burden of overseeing the project, he fell ill and passed away on the 4th day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Dragon (1820) at the age of 58.
Following his death, the Hue imperial court dispatched high-ranking officials bearing offerings to conduct a three-day state funeral. Emperor Minh Mang posthumously conferred upon him the title Tien Quan Thong Che Dieu Bat, reaffirmed his noble title Dung Ngoc Hau, and ordered soldiers to maintain and guard his tomb.
In the minds of the people of Tra On, Nguyen Van Ton was not only a military commander but also a pioneer who helped reclaim new lands and foster unity among the Kinh, Khmer, and Hoa communities. Consequently, local residents continue to honor and worship him as the guardian spirit of the region.
The Relic Complex
The Lang Ong historical site covers an area of approximately 8,000 square meters, including the main hall, the traditional opera stage, guest house, incense house, and the joint tomb of Nguyen Van Ton and his wife. The entire complex exudes an ancient and solemn atmosphere, surrounded by trees and ornamental plants that create a peaceful setting.
The main hall is dedicated to Nguyen Van Ton. His altar occupies the central position, with a ceremonial sword displayed in front as a symbol of his authority and military prestige. To the right stands the altar of his wife, Nguyen Thi Bach, whose memorial tablet bears the four Chinese characters meaning “Spirit of the Virtuous and Gentle Lady.” To the left are the altars of his son, Commander Nguyen Van Vy, and other notable historical figures such as Deputy Marshal Nguyen An, General Le Van Duyet, Supreme Commander Truong Dinh, and national hero Nguyen Trung Truc.
Behind the main hall lies the joint tomb of Nguyen Van Ton and his wife. The tomb follows the traditional architectural style of southern Vietnam, featuring a screen wall, decorative pillars, guardian qilin statues, and ornamental motifs of dragons and stylized foliage.
Inscribed on the decorative pillars is a pair of parallel sentences:
Hoa Di cộng ngưỡng
Mân Quảng đồng tri ân
“The Hoa and Khmer peoples alike admire him;
The Fujianese and Cantonese alike remember his gratitude.”
These inscriptions vividly express the deep respect and gratitude that diverse ethnic communities have for Nguyen Van Ton’s virtues and achievements.
Rituals
Raising the New Year Pole
Although the main festival takes place on the 3rd and 4th days of the Lunar New Year, preparations begin on the 30th day of the twelfth lunar month with the ritual of raising the New Year pole (cây nêu), a custom deeply rooted in East Asian culture.
The bamboo selected for the pole must be a slender yet sturdy variety capable of remaining fresh for a long period. Villagers count the bamboo nodes, and only if the top node corresponds to the auspicious sign of “Life” in traditional divination is the bamboo considered suitable. All branches and leaves are removed except for a small tuft of green leaves at the top.
After village elders conduct rituals to Heaven and Earth and report to Lord Nguyen Van Ton, the pole is erected in front of the mausoleum. Attached to the top are protective charms and symbolic objects such as clay or wooden carp, bells, and chimes. As the wind blows, these ornaments produce gentle sounds. Local people believe the pole serves as a guide for the spirit of the honored lord to return home and celebrate the New Year with his descendants.
The Tuc Yet Ceremony
From the early morning of the 3rd day of the Lunar New Year, the festival atmosphere becomes lively and vibrant. The Khmer five-tone orchestra (Ngu Am) from Go Xoai Pagoda performs festive music throughout the mausoleum grounds. This is followed by a Buddhist chanting ceremony conducted by Khmer monks to pray for peace, prosperity, and favorable weather in the coming year.
After the prayer ceremony, Chinese lion dances and traditional Khmer performances such as Robam, Sa-dam, and Du-ke theater are presented. These performances serve both as ritual offerings and as joyful celebrations welcoming the festival season.
At the beginning of the Than Hour (mid-afternoon), the Tuc Yet Ceremony officially commences with the participation of village elders. This ritual marks the formal opening of the annual memorial festival. Offerings of incense, tea, and wine are presented solemnly before the ancestral altar.
Offerings include local products such as a cleaned white pig, pig’s head, sticky rice, cakes, tea, wine, betel leaves, areca nuts, rice, salt, and many traditional southern dishes including braised pork with eggs, pickled mustard greens, pork-bone soup, and curry with bread. Together they symbolize a family meal prepared for the honored lord.
The Main Sacrificial Ceremony
The Main Sacrificial Ceremony (Chanh Te) takes place on the 4th day of the first lunar month and is the most important ritual of the festival. It commemorates the death anniversary of Nguyen Van Ton while also praying for national prosperity, abundant harvests, and the well-being of the people.
Village elders dressed in ceremonial attire perform solemn rites before the altar, offering incense, tea, and wine while reciting memorial texts praising his contributions. Following the tea offering comes the “Receiving Blessings” ritual (Am Phuoc), during which participants share the wine that has been offered to the spirit, symbolically receiving his blessings. Afterwards, local residents enter the shrine to pay respects and pray for health, peace, and good fortune.
The Xay Chau Dai Boi Ceremony
After the Main Sacrificial Ceremony comes the Xay Chau Dai Boi ritual, which is intended to pray for peace and prosperity throughout the country.
The ceremonial drum is brought onto the stage, and a representative of the villagers assumes the role of drum master. Traditional Hat Boi (classical Vietnamese opera) troupes then perform a sequence of ritual acts, including:
Opening Heaven and Purifying the Earth;
Saluting the Sun and Moon;
Celebrating the Three Blessings of Happiness, Prosperity, and Longevity;
Honoring the Four Heavenly Kings;
Bestowing Titles and Blessings;
Presenting Longevity Offerings by the Eight Immortals.
These performances carry both ritual significance and the community’s aspirations for prosperity and well-being.
Festive Activities
The festive portion of the Lang Ong Tra On Festival is exceptionally rich and vividly reflects the cultural exchange among the Kinh, Khmer, and Hoa communities.
The Khmer community presents five-tone orchestral performances, Sa-dam dances, Robam dances, Du-ke theater, and monkey dances. The Hoa community contributes lion dances, dragon dances, unicorn dances, and Tua Lau Cau music. The Kinh community organizes Hat Boi performances, traditional ritual music, and Don Ca Tai Tu music.
Following the rituals, Hat Boi troupes stage historical and patriotic plays such as:
Ly Thuong Kiet Defeats the Song Dynasty;
Mu Guiying;
Luu Kim Dinh;
Hua Mulan;
Thach Kim Hue;
The Two Fortune Stars Descend to the Mortal World.
These performances often continue late into the night and attract large audiences.
In addition, the festival features numerous communal activities, including lion dance competitions, tug-of-war contests, volleyball tournaments, culinary competitions, and traditional folk games. These activities create a lively atmosphere, strengthen community bonds, and help the festival preserve its traditions while embracing contemporary life.
Cultural Value and Community Significance
The Lang Ong Tra On Festival is a vivid expression of the Vietnamese tradition of “remembering the source when drinking water.” Through the festival, people honor the contributions of Tien Quan Thong Che Dieu Bat Nguyen Van Ton to the development and defense of southern Vietnam.
The festival also serves as a cultural space that showcases the solidarity of the Kinh, Khmer, and Hoa communities. The coexistence of Hat Boi, Khmer five-tone music, lion dances, and Tua Lau Cau music demonstrates the diversity and harmony of cultural life in the Tra On region.
Beyond fulfilling religious and spiritual needs, the festival contributes to preserving traditional performing arts, promoting patriotism, and safeguarding local cultural identity.
Today, the Lang Ong Tra On Festival is regarded as one of the key cultural highlights in Tra On District’s tourism development strategy.
Tra On possesses significant tourism potential thanks to its dense river network, distinctive orchard culture, and large Khmer population. In addition to the Lang Ong Festival, the district is home to important Khmer festivals such as Ok Om Bok, Chol Chnam Thmay, and Sen Dolta, as well as traditional craft villages, including the over-100-year-old Cu Lao May rice paper village.
Local authorities are promoting a model of river-based ecotourism combined with cultural heritage tours, traditional craft villages, Don Ca Tai Tu music, and Khmer folk arts. Within this strategy, the Lang Ong Festival plays a vital role as a representative cultural tourism product, helping to promote the image of Tra On while preserving the traditional cultural values of southern Vietnamese communities.

华人、高棉人共同景仰;
(Lễ Túc yết)
(Lễ Chánh tế)

« Les Chinois et les Khmers l’admirent ensemble ;
