Background and Life
Prince Kiến Tân was the fifth son of Emperor Lê Thánh Tông. His mother was Sung viên of the Phùng family. He was born on the Mậu Dần day, the eighth day of an unspecified lunar month, in the seventh year of the Quang Thuận era (1466). On the Tân Tỵ day of the seventh lunar month in the second year of the Hồng Đức era (1471), Emperor Lê Thánh Tông ordered Thái bảo Lê Cảnh Huy to bring a golden investiture book and formally confer upon him the title Prince Kiến.
Historical sources describe Prince Kiến Tân as a man of refined and elegant bearing, far above that of ordinary people. He was fond of learning, talented in literature, and once composed the work Lạc uyển thư nhàn. Emperor Lê Thánh Tông himself was renowned for his literary interests, and whenever he composed imperial poetry, he often ordered Prince Kiến to write matching verses in response. This detail shows that he was valued by the emperor not only as a prince, but also held a certain position within the literary life of the royal family. Through the brief surviving records, Prince Kiến appears as an educated prince who loved literature and possessed literary ability.
He had four sons. His eldest son was Prince Cẩm Giang Sùng; his second son was Oanh, later Emperor Lê Tương Dực; his third son was Duke Tĩnh Lượng Vinh; and his youngest son was Quyên, who had not yet been granted a title at that time. The sons of Prince Kiến later became closely connected with major political upheavals of the Early Lê dynasty, particularly during the final period of Lê Uy Mục’s reign and the accession of Lê Tương Dực.
Death and Posthumous Honors
On the Bính Ngọ day of the tenth lunar month in the fifth year of the Cảnh Thống era (1502), during the reign of Emperor Lê Hiến Tông, Prince Kiến Tân died at the age of thirty-five. The emperor suspended court audiences for three days as an expression of mourning and granted him the posthumous name Trinh Tĩnh.
After Lê Uy Mục ascended the throne, the royal family experienced considerable political upheaval. At the end of the Đoan Khánh era (1509), Lê Tương Dực raised an army from Tây Đô and advanced northward. During these disturbances, three of Prince Kiến’s sons—Sùng, Vinh, and Quyên—were all killed by Emperor Lê Uy Mục. Oanh alone, namely Lê Tương Dực, survived, and after ascending the throne, he posthumously honored his father with particularly elaborate rites.
In the twelfth lunar month of the first year of the Hồng Thuận era, Lê Tương Dực posthumously elevated Prince Kiến Tân as Phối Thiên Dụ Thánh Kiến Hoàng đế, bestowed upon him the temple name Đức Tông, and had his spirit tablet installed for worship in the Imperial Ancestral Temple. The emperor’s two younger brothers, Vinh and Quyên, were also posthumously granted the titles Mục Ý vương and Dực Cung vương respectively.
Later, Prince Kiến received further honorific additions to his posthumous title: Phối Thiên Dụ Thánh Ôn Lương Quang Minh Văn Triết Chương Tín Tuy Phúc Di Hưu Mục Hiếu Kiến Hoàng đế. In the third lunar month of the fifth year, six additional characters—Hiển Nghiệp Khải Tường Túy Đức—were added to the title. At the beginning of the Quang Thiệu era under Lê Chiêu Tông (1516), his temple name was again further exalted.
The life of Prince Kiến Tân is mainly recorded in historical sources from two perspectives: first, as an educated and literary-minded prince under Emperor Lê Thánh Tông; and second, as the father of Lê Tương Dực, the ruler who ascended the throne during a highly turbulent period of the Early Lê dynasty.
The records stating that the emperor frequently asked him to compose matching poems, together with the fact that he authored Lạc uyển thư nhàn, reveal a noteworthy aspect of contemporary royal life: princes were not only raised according to courtly discipline, but also participated in intellectual and literary activities. After his death, he was posthumously elevated by his son and enshrined in the Imperial Ancestral Temple. From that point onward, Prince Kiến’s status no longer remained merely that of an imperial prince but was formally established within the royal ancestral cult.

Lê Uy Mục
Phối Thiên Dụ Thánh Ôn Lương Quang Minh Văn Triết Chương Tín Tuy Phúc Di Hưu Mục Hiếu Kiến hoàng đế。
Lê Chiêu Tông
Kiến vương Tân
