Background
Lê Lễ (1368-1449) was one of the representative founding meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty, a man who made important contributions to the Lam Sơn uprising and to the establishment of the Later Lê dynasty. He was born in 1368; however, official historical sources do not record specific details about his native place, family background, or youth.
Lê Lễ came from a family that had served for generations as retainers of the Lê lineage in Lam Sơn, now in Thọ Xuân district, Thanh Hóa province. His family had long been attached to and served the household of Lê Khoáng, the father of Lê Lợi. For this reason, Lê Lễ himself early became a close attendant of Lê Lợi even before the Lam Sơn uprising broke out. The long-standing close relationship between the two families created special trust, causing Lê Lễ to be entrusted with important duties both during the uprising and after the Lê dynasty was established.
Lê Lễ was loyal, upright, and possessed strength beyond ordinary people. He always stayed close to Lê Lợi, “attending him morning and evening, never leaving his side,” devotedly serving his lord with unwavering loyalty. He was not only a trusted retainer but also a courageous military commander, directly taking part in battle many times during the most difficult stages of the Lam Sơn uprising. His absolute loyalty and military courage helped him become one of the close attendants most trusted by Lê Lợi.
After the Lam Sơn uprising achieved victory and the Early Lê dynasty was established in 1428, Lê Lễ continued to be employed by the court. He was appointed to many important offices, eventually holding the position of Nhập nội thị trung and receiving the title Marquis of Đình Thượng, becoming one of the founding meritorious officials with high status under the reign of Lê Thái Tổ.
Career
Participation in the Lam Sơn Uprising
Lê Lễ was one of those who followed and supported Lê Lợi even before the Lam Sơn uprising broke out and was regarded as one of Bình Định Vương’s most trusted family retainers. With the long-standing close relationship between the two families, he was always beside Lê Lợi in the most difficult moments of the war against the Ming army. Unlike many generals who stood out on the battlefield, Lê Lễ’s role was mainly associated with protecting, assisting, and ensuring the safety of his lord, while also directly participating in military activities throughout the ten years of resistance.
According to Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư, Lê Lễ was the man who “attended morning and evening, never leaving his side,” and was known for absolute loyalty, devotion, and extraordinary strength. In the early years of the uprising, when the Lam Sơn insurgents repeatedly encountered hardship and were besieged many times by the Ming army, Lê Lợi himself also fell into life-threatening danger. Especially when Lê Lợi’s family members were captured by the Ming army and he himself had to break through encirclements many times to escape, Lê Lễ was always the one who stood beside him to protect him. Official histories record that Lê Lợi’s many escapes from dangerous situations were “mostly due to Lễ’s merit,” showing his special role in preserving the leadership force of the uprising.
Lê Lễ was not only loyal but was also regarded as a man of strong will and high responsibility. Throughout the resistance war, he always followed Lê Lợi on every road, sharing all hardships, from the days when the insurgents had to retreat into Chí Linh Mountain, lacking food and weapons, to the later period of counteroffensive victories. This devotion made him one of the close attendants most trusted by Lê Lợi.
Lê Lễ’s loyalty and merits were praised by Lê Thái Tổ many times. The king once said: “If all merits were gathered together, who else but you would deserve the position of chancellor? What would I begrudge you? It is only because your ability is not equal to it.”
This remark shows that Lê Lễ was highly valued for his loyalty and contributions to the uprising, although his administrative ability was not considered as outstanding as that of some other high officials. When he fell seriously ill before his death, Lê Thái Tổ was also moved and instructed: “If I am no longer here, who will still understand you? I fear that from now on you may be demoted or dismissed.”
That prediction later came true, reflecting Lê Thái Tổ’s understanding of the political changes that might occur after his death.
Rewards and Recognition of Merit
After the Lam Sơn uprising achieved complete victory and the Early Lê dynasty was established in 1428, Lê Lễ was ranked among the founding meritorious officials who had made many contributions. In the reward ceremony for the generals and soldiers who had participated in the Lũng Nhai oath and the Thiết Đột troops, he was ranked in the third class of merit, granted the royal surname Lê, appointed Trung Vũ Đại phu Câu Khiềm Vệ Tướng quân, and given the title Trí tự. Being granted the royal surname was a special honor, showing Lê Thái Tổ’s recognition of those who had rendered service and shown absolute loyalty to the court.
In the third lunar month of 1429, during the reward ceremony for 93 founding meritorious officials, Lê Lễ was granted the title Marquis of Đình Thượng. This was one of the high titles given to meritorious officials who had made important contributions to the victory of the Lam Sơn uprising, affirming his position among those who had rendered great service to the Early Lê dynasty.
Death
Under the reign of Lê Thái Tông, just as Lê Thái Tổ had feared before his death, Lê Lễ was demoted from the office of Nhập nội thị trung to Crown Prince’s Junior Guardian. According to some records, this demotion was related to slander by Nguyễn Thị Lộ, but historical sources do not clearly record the specific cause or the reliability of the matter. This partly reflects the political changes and power struggles within the court in the early years after Lê Thái Tổ’s death.
In the summer of 1449, the court restored him to the office of Nhập nội thị trung together with the title Marquis of Tự Hiệu, recognizing once again his merits and former status. However, on the very day he was restored to office, Lê Lễ passed away, closing the life of a loyal family retainer who had been wholly attached to the career of Lê Thái Tổ and the Early Lê dynasty.
Although he was not prominent for brilliant battlefield victories or major reforms in court administration, Lê Lễ is still regarded by history as a model of a loyal, devoted, and faithful close attendant. Throughout his life, he considered assisting his ruler to be his purpose, contributing importantly to the success of the Lam Sơn uprising and the birth of the Later Lê dynasty. It was this steadfast loyalty that caused the name of Lê Lễ to be remembered among the representative founding meritorious officials of Vietnamese history.
Assessment and Evaluation
Lê Lễ was one of the representative founding meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty, representing the class of loyal family retainers who devoted themselves to assisting Lê Lợi from the first days of his enterprise. Unlike many famous generals who stood out through brilliant military achievements on the battlefield, Lê Lễ’s mark was shown first of all in his absolute loyalty, devotion, and role as a trusted close attendant who remained beside Bình Định Vương throughout the Lam Sơn uprising. That attachment contributed importantly to ensuring the safety of the leader of the uprising, allowing the Lam Sơn movement to overcome dangerous stages and reach final victory.
The records in Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư all show that Lê Lễ was especially trusted and loved by Lê Thái Tổ. The fact that the king publicly praised his merits many times, while also expressing concern for his future before his death, reflects the special position that Lê Lễ held among the founding meritorious officials. This also shows that his merit lay not only in military achievements but also in loyalty, devotion, and unconditional service to his lord and the dynasty.
The life of Lê Lễ also partly reflects the political situation in the early period of the Early Lê dynasty. However, the fact that his offices and titles were later restored before his death shows that the court still recognized his contributions and qualities. Although he did not play a prominent role in governing the country like some other high officials of the same period, Lê Lễ has always been regarded as someone who made considerable contributions to the founding of the Later Lê dynasty.
Overall, Lê Lễ is a representative image of the loyal family retainer in Vietnamese history. Throughout his life, he wholeheartedly assisted Lê Lợi, disregarded hardship and danger, and never changed his loyalty. His quiet but enduring contributions helped bring about the victory of the Lam Sơn uprising as well as the birth of the Early Lê dynasty. The name of Lê Lễ is therefore always mentioned as an example of loyalty to the ruler, righteousness, and devotion to the great cause of the nation.

Origines
