Luong The Vinh (1441–1496)
Career
Luong The Vinh (梁世榮) was born in Thien Ban District (now Vu Ban District), Nam Dinh Province. He was renowned as a child prodigy, widely learned and intellectually versatile. In 1463, at the age of only 23, he placed first (Trang nguyen) in the Quy Mui imperial examination, in the fourth year of the Quang Thuan reign under King Le Thanh Tong. In the same examination, Nguyen Duc Trinh ranked Tham hoa, and Quach Dinh Bao ranked Bang nhan.
After passing the examination, Luong The Vinh served as an official for a total of 32 years and was eventually promoted to Han lam Thi thu, concurrently in charge of the affairs of the Han Lam Academy, effectively becoming its head. He was especially trusted by the king and was frequently assigned to draft diplomatic documents and to receive foreign envoys. Many memorials he composed and sent to the Ming court were accepted and praised by the Ming authorities.
Alongside his official career, Luong The Vinh also took part in teaching at high-level state educational institutions such as the Quoc Tu Giam, Sung Van Quan, and Tu Lam Cuc, which trained talent for the country. Many of his students achieved high academic success, notably Nguyen Tat Dai (from Thai Binh, Doctor in 1489), Tran Bich Hoanh (from Nam Dinh, Tham hoa in 1497), Tran Xuan Vinh (from Nam Dinh, Doctor), and Luong Dac Bang (from Thanh Hoa, Bang nhan in 1499). Notably, Luong Dac Bang later became the teacher of the famous scholar Nguyen Binh Khiem.
In his later years, Luong The Vinh retired from office and returned to his native village, where he led a leisurely life and devoted himself to useful pursuits until his death. In daily life, he climbed mountains, flew kites, read books, and socialized with village elders, maintaining a simple lifestyle close to rural people.
Luong The Vinh died on the 26th day of the 8th lunar month of the Binh Thin year (2 October 1496) in his hometown, at the age of 55. After his death, he was venerated by the people as a beneficent tutelary spirit. His name and career were recorded in many types of sources such as poetry, prose, inscriptions, Buddhist didactic texts, and diplomatic documents, reflecting the strong official and religious character of his writings.
Scholarly and Literary Contributions
In addition to teaching mathematics at the Tu Lam Cuc, Luong The Vinh was appointed Cap su trung khoa cong, an official position responsible for supervising and evaluating state construction projects such as palaces, temples, citadels, roads, and dike systems. Because this work required precise mathematical knowledge, he devoted great effort to compiling two mathematical treatises collectively known as Dai thanh Toan phap.
In the context of his time, calculating tools in Dai Viet were extremely rudimentary, relying mainly on finger counting or knotted cords. In response to this reality, Luong The Vinh invented the ban tinh gay, regarded as the first abacus created by a Vietnamese. Initially, he made counting beads from clay, drilling holes through their centers and stringing them into rows. Later, he improved the design by replacing clay beads with short bamboo segments and then with painted wooden beads in different colors to enhance accuracy, memorability, and convenience in calculation.
Beyond mathematics, Luong The Vinh also possessed profound knowledge of cheo folk theater. Together with Than Nhan Trung and Do Nhuan, he participated in compiling the collections Dong van and Nha nhac used in state rituals and court ceremonies. Based on research into hundreds of folk cheo plays, he compiled Hy phuong pha luc, a work that systematically recorded the organization of cheo troupes, scripts, performance techniques, drumming methods, as well as styles of dance and singing. In 1501, five years after his death, his close friend Quach Huu Nghiem wrote a preface and had this work engraved and printed.
In literary circles, Luong The Vinh held the position of Sai phu in the Tao Dan literary society led by King Le Thanh Tong, where he was responsible for critiquing and editing poetry and prose. He frequently composed matching poems with the king, notably works such as Tuong si nho nha and Dong Luc Van. He also collaborated with Than Nhan Trung, Do Nhuan, and Dao Cu in composing inscriptions and stele texts at the Temple of Literature and the One Pillar Pagoda.
Luong The Vinh is also believed to be the author of Thap gioi Co hon Quoc Ngu van (also known as the Buddhist text Thap gioi). This is an early Nom work consisting of a preface and ten sections discussing ten categories of wandering souls, including Buddhist monks, Daoist priests, officials, Confucian scholars, experts in astronomy and geomancy, physicians, generals, courtesans, merchants, and libertines. The composition of this Buddhist-themed work led some contemporary Confucian colleagues to ridicule him and is also considered a reason why he was not enshrined in the Temple of Literature dedicated to Confucius.
Anecdotes
Weighing an Elephant
On one occasion, envoys of the Ming emperor from China came to probe for talented individuals in Dai Viet. King Le assigned Luong The Vinh to receive them. During an outing along the To Lich River, a Ming envoy produced a scale and asked Vinh to weigh an elephant. Although he knew Luong The Vinh was highly capable, the envoy was confident that this time he would embarrass the Vietnamese top scholar.
Understanding the envoy’s intentions, Vinh smiled, took the scale, and ordered the mahout to lead the elephant onto a raft. While the envoy was still puzzled, Vinh measured the depth to which the raft sank. He then had the elephant led off and stones loaded onto the raft. When the raft sank to the same level as when it carried the elephant, Vinh stopped loading and used the scale to weigh the stones on the raft.
“The talent of your Trang nguyen is beyond compare,” exclaimed the envoy. “I bow in admiration!”
A Subtle Way of Praising the King
In his youth, Luong The Vinh was famously mischievous and often swam in rivers and lakes, becoming an excellent swimmer. Knowing this, one day while boating with Luong The Vinh and other officials in attendance, King Le Thanh Tong pretended to be drunk and pushed Vinh into the river, then ordered the boat to continue rowing.
Unexpectedly, after falling into the water, Luong The Vinh dived and swam far away, surfacing at a secluded spot and hiding in a thicket where no one could see him. When Vinh did not reappear for a long time, the king panicked and ordered soldiers to jump into the water to search for him, but to no avail. Deeply remorseful over his excessive jest, the king was nearly in tears when suddenly Vinh emerged from the water, shaking his head and laughing loudly. After returning to the boat, Vinh continued laughing. The king, astonished, questioned him repeatedly, until Vinh finally replied:
“I stayed underwater for so long because I encountered something strange and amusing. I met Qu Yuan, who asked me why I had come down. I falsely replied that I was weary of life and wished to die. Hearing this, Qu Yuan stared wide-eyed and scolded me: ‘You are a madman! I encountered corrupt and immoral rulers like Chu Huai Wang and Qingxiang Wang, and only then did I abandon my state and people to drown myself in the Miluo River. You have met a sage and enlightened ruler—why would you think of such foolish things?’ Then he kicked me, and I returned here.”
Le Thanh Tong realized that Luong The Vinh was cleverly flattering him, but he was greatly pleased nonetheless and rewarded Vinh with much gold and silk.

(Luong The Vinh,1441–1496)
