Background
Prince Phúc Tranh was the sixth son of Emperor Lê Thánh Tông. His mother was Tài nhân of the Nguyễn family. He was born on the Nhâm Thìn day, the twenty-seventh day of the third lunar month in the eighth year of the Quang Thuận era (1467).
In the second year of the Hồng Đức era (1471), Lê Thánh Tông ordered Lê Huy Cát, who held the offices of Đại tư mã of the Eastern Army and Tả đô đốc chưởng phủ sự, to bring a golden investiture book and an imperial seal of investiture to confer upon him the title Prince Phúc. At the same time, a princely residence was established for him in Đông Tác Ward, Vĩnh Xương District, in the capital.
Life
After being granted the title of prince, Prince Phúc Tranh lived a relatively stable life in his own residence. On the Kỷ Tỵ day of the twelfth lunar month in the seventeenth year of the Hồng Đức era (1486), he married Thục Tuân, daughter of Minister of War Trịnh Văn Lượng, who was installed as his consort. This marriage shows that matrimonial ties involving princes of the Lê dynasty were not confined to the imperial clan but also connected them with families of high-ranking court officials.
In the nineteenth year of Hồng Đức (1488), Thục Tuân died. Later, in the twelfth lunar month of the twenty-sixth year of Hồng Đức (1495), Prince Phúc Tranh married Châu Hạp, daughter of Mậu ân sứ Lưu Cảnh Đức, who became his consort.
Prince Phúc Tranh was known not only for his status as an imperial prince, but was also particularly noted in historical sources for his learning and literary talent. He was simple and restrained in character, gentle, upright, and sincere. He spoke little and consistently conducted himself according to ritual propriety and established rules. He was fond of reading, especially the Book of Changes (Yijing), and was capable of comprehending the deeper meanings of the classical texts. He was also skilled in cursive calligraphy and highly talented in composing poetry. Historical sources describe his poetry as possessing an elevated and vigorous style.
Prince Phúc Tranh’s literary talent was demonstrated through his relationship with Emperor Lê Thánh Tông. On one occasion, when accompanying the imperial procession on a visit to Lam Kinh, he composed poetry and prose in response to the emperor’s own compositions and received particular praise from Lê Thánh Tông. The emperor also presented him with summer cloth from Goryeo.
Later, during the reign of Lê Hiến Tông, his literary abilities continued to be highly regarded by the emperor. Lê Hiến Tông once summoned him to the palace, gave him poems to which he was asked to compose matching verses, praised his work, and presented him with cloth, silk, and white shoes. The emperor advised him to take pleasure in reading books and performing good deeds. These records show that Prince Phúc Tranh maintained relatively close relationships with both Lê Thánh Tông and Lê Hiến Tông in matters of learning and literature.
His contemporaries even compared him with the Prince of Dongping and the Prince of Hejian of China, imperial princes renowned for their scholarship and literary accomplishments. Such comparisons indicate that Prince Phúc Tranh’s learning was highly regarded during his own lifetime, rather than being merely the product of praise recorded after his death.
Death and Worship
On the Giáp Ngọ day of the sixth lunar month in the third year of the Cảnh Thống era (1500), Prince Phúc Tranh fell ill. Because of the condition of his health, the court repeatedly dispatched officials and physicians to examine and treat him.
On the Quý Mão day, the emperor sent Phụng ngự Phạm Thế Tứ and Thái y biện nghiệm Nguyễn Sĩ to visit and examine him. In the seventh lunar month, Nguyễn Huy Hàn of the Tế Sinh Hall was again sent to examine and treat him. By the Bính Tuất day of the eighth lunar month, his condition had become critical. The court continued to dispatch Phụng ngự Lê Biểu and Thái y đại sứ Lý Thủ Nhượng to diagnose his illness, but his condition did not improve.
Realizing that he would not recover, Prince Phúc Tranh struggled to sit upright and summoned the officials of his residence to give instructions concerning his funeral. He requested that the funeral be conducted frugally, that no Buddhist rites be performed, and that only the ancient rites be followed. These final instructions show that he placed great importance on ritual institutions while maintaining a simple and restrained way of life even in the arrangements for his own funeral.
On the Mậu Tý day, Prince Phúc Tranh died at the age of thirty-four. He left behind three young sons. Emperor Lê Hiến Tông was deeply saddened by his death, suspended court audiences for three days, and issued an edict specifying the order in which members of the royal family and princesses were to attend the mourning rites according to their respective ranks.
On the Canh Dần day, the court granted 282,000 coins to assist with the funeral expenses. On the Quý Sửu day of the ninth lunar month, the emperor further ordered Trịnh Quý Thuật, Tả đô đốc of the Northern Army and holder of the title Mậu Lâm bá, to perform a sacrificial rite on the emperor’s behalf. In the tenth lunar month, on the Quý Dậu day, the coffin was taken for burial at Hạnh Hoa Khê field in Tây Mỗ, his mother’s native place. The emperor bestowed upon him the posthumous name Ý Khang.
Assessment
Prince Phúc Tranh was an imperial prince distinguished by his learning and literary talent during the reign of Lê Thánh Tông. Historical sources not only record his fondness for reading, particularly his interest in the Book of Changes, but also emphasize his abilities in calligraphy and poetry. They further record that on numerous occasions he was summoned by Lê Thánh Tông and Lê Hiến Tông to compose matching poems and received praise and rewards from the emperors.
Alongside his learning, he was also described as simple, gentle, disciplined in accordance with ritual propriety, and devoted to reading and performing good deeds. These characteristics create the image of a prince whose way of life was relatively distinct from the luxury often associated with the imperial court.
