Trieu Viet Vuong

Background
Regarding the background of Trieu Quang Phuc, both Toan Thu and Cuong Muc record that he was the son of Trieu Tuc, a tribal leader in the region of Chu Dien. Cuong Muc provides a more detailed account: “Quang Phuc was the son of Trieu Tuc, a native of Chu Dien District. He was a man of authority and great bravery. He followed Ly Bon, Emperor of Nam Viet, in various campaigns, rendered meritorious services, and was appointed Left General. After Ly Bon passed away, Quang Phuc proclaimed himself king. At that time, he stationed his troops at Da Trach. Seeing that the Liang forces refused to withdraw, he burned incense to pray to Heaven and received an auspicious omen—a dragon claw—which he fixed onto his helmet to intimidate the enemy. From then on, the reputation of his army spread far and wide, and they won every battle.”

As General under Ly Nam De

Trieu Quang Phuc was one of the key figures who contributed significantly to leading the people in resisting the invasion of the Liang dynasty (542–543), helping safeguard the independence of the Van Xuan state. In 544, after successfully defeating the invaders, Ly Bi declared the establishment of Van Xuan, proclaimed himself Nam Viet De (styled in history as Ly Nam De), adopted the reign title Thien Duc, and established a full-fledged court with civil and military officials. Within this administrative system, Trieu Quang Phuc was appointed Great General, holding a crucial role in the defense of the nation. However, in 545, the Liang once again organized a large-scale invasion. General Chen Batiên (Tran Ba Tien) commanded the naval forces departing from Pieng Nguong, advancing rapidly into Giao Chau, while Yang Piao (Duong Phieu) led the land forces through Hep Pho and then directly toward Giao Chi (northern Vietnam today). Facing overwhelming enemy strength, Ly Nam De, despite his best efforts, could not hold them back and was forced to retreat to defend the fortress of Gia Ninh (in the Bach Hac – Viet Tri region).

Leadership Against the Liang

In 546, the enemy forces surrounded Gia Ninh. In this dangerous situation, Ly Nam De and his generals withdrew to Dong Lao (now in Vinh Phuc). In the eighth month of that year, he mobilized about 20,000 soldiers from Dong Lao to Dien Triet Lake (Lap Thach, Vinh Phuc), preparing warships for a decisive confrontation. However, during a night of torrential rain, floodwaters surged into the lake. General Tran Ba Tien seized the opportunity and launched a fierce assault. Ly Nam De’s forces could not respond in time and withdrew to Dong Khuat Lao (Tam Thanh, Vinh Phuc). There, Ly Nam De and his court took temporary refuge and entrusted military command to Trieu Quang Phuc to continue the resistance. In the first lunar month of 547, Trieu Quang Phuc withdrew his troops to defend the Da Trach Marsh (now Man Tro sandbank, Chau Ninh Commune, Hung Yen Province). The area had treacherous terrain: a large marsh with dense vegetation and muddy surroundings that impeded movement. In the middle of the marsh stood a high mound suitable for encampment, accessible only by small dugout canoes handled by those familiar with the terrain. Outsiders could easily get lost or even be attacked by venomous snakes if they fell into the water.Understanding the geography thoroughly, Trieu Quang Phuc and over 20,000 soldiers established a base in the marsh and conducted guerrilla warfare. During the day, they maintained strict secrecy; at night, they launched surprise attacks using small canoes against Tran Ba Tien’s camps, seizing supplies and weapons and destroying many enemy forces. This enabled his troops to maintain provisions for prolonged resistance, while Tran Ba Tien repeatedly failed to defeat him. The people thus honored him as Da Trach Vuong (King of Da Trach). After receiving news that Ly Nam De had passed away at Dong Khuat Lao, Trieu Quang Phuc proclaimed himself Trieu Viet Vuong to continue leading the resistance. By 550, Tran Ba Tien attempted to prolong the campaign to exhaust Trieu Viet Vuong’s forces. However, at that moment, the Liang court fell into the Hou Jing Rebellion, forcing Tran Ba Tien to withdraw and hand over command to Yang San (Duong San). Seizing the opportunity, Trieu Viet Vuong launched a strong counterattack, defeated the Liang forces, killed many enemy troops, and forced the remnants to flee north.

Relations with the Later Ly Nam De Line

After routing the Liang, Trieu Viet Vuong ascended the throne and established a new dynasty. Meanwhile, Ly Thien Bao, elder brother of Ly Nam De, after failing against Tran Ba Tien, fled to the land of the Di Lao people, called himself Dao Lang Vuong, and founded the state of Da Nang. In 555, Ly Thien Bao died without an heir, so the people installed a relative of his, Ly Phat Tu, as successor. In 557, Ly Phat Tu marched southward and clashed with Trieu Viet Vuong in Thai Binh District (now Hoai Duc, Hanoi). Their forces fought repeatedly without a decisive result. Weaker in strength, Ly Phat Tu sought peace. Trieu Viet Vuong, out of respect for their clan’s relation to Ly Nam De, agreed and divided the land at Quan Than Field, giving Ly Phat Tu control of the western part and relocating his capital to O Dien.Later, Ly Phat Tu sent his son Nha Lang to propose marriage to Trieu Viet Vuong’s daughter Cao Nuong. Trieu Viet Vuong agreed and let Nha Lang stay as a son-in-law. Historians note that although Trieu Viet Vuong had defeated the Liang forces, he lacked sufficient power to unify all the territory of Van Xuan, allowing the Ly faction to persist and compete for dominance. In 571, Ly Phat Tu suddenly attacked Trieu Viet Vuong. Facing overwhelming force, Trieu Viet Vuong fled south with his daughter in search of refuge. Reaching the Dai Nha Estuary, pursued by enemy troops and with no escape left, he threw himself into the sea and died. The Trieu dynasty thus fell, and power came entirely into the hands of the Ly faction.

Comments from Historians

Historian Ngo Si Lien wrote: “Women consider marriage as ‘returning’ (quy), meaning their husband’s family becomes their own. Since the king’s daughter had already married Nha Lang, why was she not allowed to return to her husband’s house, but instead remained in residence like the custom of the Qin’s Ying clan, resulting in such ruin?”The Kham Dinh Viet Su Thong Giam Cuong Muc comments: “The Old History states that Trieu Viet Vuong received a dragon claw from Chu Dong Tu; that Nha Lang, sent as a son-in-law, stole the claw; and that Trieu Viet Vuong lost the battle because of losing it. These accounts match exactly the tale of Thuc An Duong Vuong and Trieu Trong Thuy, and are strange and implausible, requiring little debate. But the Old History often repeats itself and strays far from the truth. To find in it what can be trusted and passed down to later generations is truly difficult.”

Temples Dedicated to Him

People in many regions have built temples dedicated to Trieu Viet Vuong, especially along the coastal areas of Ninh Binh, near the old Dai Nha Estuary (now the Lieu Estuary on the Day River). Prominent sites include temples, communal houses, and pagodas in Yen Cuong, Nam Minh, Xuan Truong, Hai Hung, Chat Binh, Phat Diem, Quang Thien, Yen Mac, Yen Tu, Ninh Khang, Gia Tran, Gia Van, Khanh Hong, Yen Khanh, and Khanh Thien. In Hung Yen, Hoa Da Trach Temple (in Trieu Viet Vuong Commune) worships both Chu Dong Tu and Trieu Viet Vuong. In 2012, the local community built Temple of the Forest King in An Vy, where he once trained his troops; an annual festival is held on the 12th day of the eighth lunar month. A new temple dedicated solely to him has also been constructed. His name is now given to many streets, schools, and public works throughout the country, reflecting the people’s gratitude to this heroic king.

Trieu Viet Vuong

Origines

(Trieu Viet Vuong)
