Background

Trương Tấn Bửu (1752-1827), also known as Trương Tấn Long, was one of the founding meritorious officials and representative generals of Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, who later became Emperor Gia Long. He was born and raised in Hưng Lễ village, Bảo Phước canton, in the former Vĩnh Long region, now Hưng Lễ commune, Giồng Trôm district, Bến Tre province. He came from a family with a tradition of labor and close attachment to the Southern Vietnamese land that was then in the process of being reclaimed. His father was Trương Tấn Khương, and his mother was Trần Thị Nghĩa. He was the third son in the family, though according to the common form of address in Southern Vietnam, he was called the fourth son.

Growing up in the context of Southern Vietnam being continually affected by the political upheavals of the late eighteenth century, Trương Tấn Bửu early witnessed the confrontation between the forces of the Nguyễn lords and the Tây Sơn movement. He made many important contributions in the war against the Tây Sơn movement, helping restore the Nguyễn family’s cause and unify the country in the early nineteenth century. With his military achievements and services throughout his campaigns, he was granted the title Marquis of Long Vân and was honored by his contemporaries as one of the Five Tiger Generals of Gia Định in the early Nguyễn dynasty.

Career

According to tradition, from a young age, Trương Tấn Bửu was famous for his handsome appearance, extraordinary strength, and courageous spirit. Folk tradition praised him as a man who could face a fierce tiger alone, reflecting the image of an outstanding military general in the early period of reclaiming Southern Vietnam. It was precisely this bravery and talent that laid the foundation for his entry into a military career.

In 1787, while Nguyễn Phúc Ánh was in the most difficult stage of the war against the Tây Sơn movement, the Nguyễn lord, on his way to seek refuge, stopped to rest at the house of Trương Tấn Bửu’s father in Hưng Lễ. Seeing this as an opportunity to contribute to the restoration of the Nguyễn family’s cause, he asked to follow and assist Nguyễn Phúc Ánh. From the very first days of joining the army, Trương Tấn Bửu personally protected Nguyễn Phúc Ánh in a fierce battle, helping the Nguyễn lord escape from the encirclement of the Tây Sơn army. This event marked the beginning of a long-lasting close relationship between him and Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, while also opening a military career that lasted nearly four decades.

After consecutive defeats against the Tây Sơn, Trương Tấn Bửu and other generals followed Nguyễn Phúc Ánh to Siam to seek assistance. Although the Nguyễn-Siamese allied army was defeated by the Tây Sơn army under the command of Nguyễn Huệ in the Battle of Rạch Gầm-Xoài Mút in 1785, Trương Tấn Bửu remained loyal to Nguyễn Phúc Ánh and did not lose heart because of the initial failures. When the forces of the Nguyễn lord were restored, he was appointed Cai cơ, under the command of Tôn Thất Hội, and gradually took part in campaigns to recapture Southern Vietnam and expand Nguyễn Ánh’s sphere of control.

Thanks to his many military achievements, in June 1790 Trương Tấn Bửu was promoted to the position of Hậu quân Hậu chi Chánh chưởng chi, then transferred to serve as Commander in Charge of the Vanguard Army. These were all important positions in the military command system of Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, showing that he had become one of the key generals of the Nguyễn lord’s forces.

By 1797, in the context of the Tây Sơn dynasty weakening after the death of Emperor Quang Trung, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh intensified military campaigns to regain Central Vietnam. Trương Tấn Bửu directly took part in many major battles at Bình Định and Hội An, achieving important military merits and contributing to creating advantages for the Nguyễn army during the decisive stage of the war. With these achievements, he was promoted to Deputy General of the Vanguard Army, becoming one of the high-ranking generals in the army.

After Nguyễn Phúc Ánh unified the country and ascended the throne in 1802, Trương Tấn Bửu was appointed Chưởng dinh, in charge of the Bắc Thành army. This was the time when the Nguyễn dynasty shifted from warfare to building and consolidating the government. Therefore, the role of military generals was not limited to military affairs but expanded into administrative management and the maintenance of security and order. During this period, Trương Tấn Bửu continued to demonstrate his command and administrative abilities in one of the most important regions of the country.

In 1806, faced with the situation in which Chinese pirates, often called Tàu Ô, frequently harassed the coastal areas, Trương Tấn Bửu was assigned to command the forces sent to suppress them. After excellently completing the task, he was promoted to Deputy General of the Central Army, concurrently Deputy General of the Left Army, and was also entrusted with the acting authority of Governor-General of Bắc Thành, replacing Nguyễn Văn Thành. This was one of the highest positions that a military official could hold under the reign of Gia Long, showing the emperor’s special trust in him.

In 1810, Trương Tấn Bửu was transferred to the South to serve as Acting Governor-General of Gia Định Citadel. Two years later, he was officially appointed Deputy Governor-General of Gia Định, directly assisting Governor-General Lê Văn Duyệt in managing the whole of Southern Vietnam. During this time, he participated in administering the administrative, defense, and economic development affairs of Gia Định Citadel, the most important political, military, and commercial center in the South.

In 1816, he was assigned to command the construction of Châu Đốc Citadel, a military work of strategic significance in protecting the southwestern frontier against upheavals from Chenla and Siam. After completing this task, he was summoned back to the capital Huế to hold the post of Deputy General of the Central Army, continuing to take part in the administration of the imperial army.

At the beginning of Minh Mạng’s reign, in 1821, Trương Tấn Bửu was once again sent to Gia Định to serve as Deputy Governor-General of Gia Định Citadel. According to Đại Nam thực lục, although he was already over seventy years old at that time, the emperor still considered him a man of “kindness, simplicity, and calmness,” with enough prestige to continue undertaking responsibilities in this strategic region of the country. This shows that not only his talent but also his character was especially valued by the court.

In 1822, Trương Tấn Bửu was promoted to the rank of First Principal Grade, one of the highest ranks granted to great ministers of the Nguyễn dynasty. In the same year, Emperor Minh Mạng posthumously granted his father the titles General of Stern Majesty and Commander of the Central Army, and also posthumously granted his mother the rank of noble lady, showing the honor that the court bestowed upon the family of a meritorious official.

Also in 1822, when the British diplomatic mission led by John Crawfurd arrived in Gia Định to negotiate with the Nguyễn court, Trương Tấn Bửu, in his position as Deputy Governor-General, together with Governor-General Lê Văn Duyệt, received the delegation. In his memoirs, Crawfurd described Trương Tấn Bửu as a great minister over seventy years old with a “venerable and handsome elderly” appearance, reflecting the image of an experienced meritorious official who was highly respected by the court.

In 1823, under the direction of Lê Văn Duyệt, Trương Tấn Bửu and Thoại Ngọc Hầu Nguyễn Văn Thoại commanded around 35,000 soldiers and laborers to dredge the Vĩnh Tế Canal. This was one of the largest hydraulic works of the Nguyễn dynasty, holding special significance for economic development, the expansion of waterway transportation, and the consolidation of security along the southwestern frontier. Entrusting Trương Tấn Bửu with the command of such a large-scale project further affirmed his organizational ability and prestige among the meritorious officials of the Nguyễn dynasty.

Family

His father was Trương Tấn Khương.

His mother was Trần Thị Nghĩa.

His descendants are not clearly recorded.

Death and Worship

Due to old age and declining health, in 1825 Trương Tấn Bửu submitted a memorial requesting retirement, and Emperor Minh Mạng approved it. Although he no longer held office, the court still allowed him to receive full stipends as when he was still in service, showing respect for his long-standing contributions.

On August 2, 1827, corresponding to the 10th day of the 6th lunar month of the Đinh Hợi year, Trương Tấn Bửu passed away at the age of seventy-five. Emperor Minh Mạng assigned Lê Văn Duyệt to preside over the funeral, while also granting burial land, money, and brocade for the funeral arrangements. In 1852, under the reign of Emperor Tự Đức, he was enshrined at the Trung Hưng Công Thần Temple and the Hiền Lương Temple, in recognition of his great contributions to the restoration and construction of the Nguyễn dynasty.

Looking back over his entire career, Trương Tấn Bửu was not only an outstanding military general on the battlefield but also an administrator who made many contributions to stabilizing the administrative apparatus, protecting the frontier, and developing Southern Vietnam. His life reflects the typical image of the founding meritorious officials of the Nguyễn dynasty—those who both contributed to national unification and laid the foundations for the administration and development of the country in the first decades of the nineteenth century.

Assessment and Evaluation

Trương Tấn Bửu was one of the founding meritorious officials and representative generals of the Nguyễn dynasty, making many important contributions to the restoration of Nguyễn Phúc Ánh’s cause and to the building of the dynasty after the country was unified. With nearly forty years of campaigning and service to the court, he not only achieved many military merits on the battlefield but also held many important positions in military and administrative affairs, especially in Bắc Thành and Gia Định Citadel.

He was not only a talented general but was also regarded as a man of kindness, simplicity, and composure, highly trusted by Emperors Gia Long and Minh Mạng as well as by his colleagues. He made many contributions to stabilizing the situation in Southern Vietnam, building defensive systems, and taking part in long-lasting works, most notably the dredging of the Vĩnh Tế Canal.

Overall, Trương Tấn Bửu was a representative figure of the founding military generals of the Nguyễn dynasty. His contributions in both military affairs and administrative management played an important role in the process of national unification, the consolidation of government, and the development of Southern Vietnam in the first decades of the nineteenth century.

Origines
