Name and Geographical Location
Dung Tien Commune, formerly Cu Lai Commune of An Boi Canton, Tu Ky District, Ha Hong Prefecture, Hai Duong Province, is now part of Vinh Bao District, Hai Phong City. This land possesses a deep historical and cultural background and still preserves many valuable religious and spiritual sites, among which Cu Lai Pagoda is remarkable.
History and Architecture
Although no document records the exact date of construction, oral traditions affirm that Cu Lai Pagoda was built long ago, closely associated with the formation of the land, its people, and its cultural traditions. The pagoda’s name derives directly from its original locality.
The pagoda’s formal name is Duc Am Tu. It has long been the Buddhist spiritual center of the local community. The pagoda faces west, aligned with Cu Lai Communal House, and follows the “Front Saint – Rear Buddha” (Tien Thanh – Hau Phat) architectural style, creating a dignified and harmonious appearance.
Built on a broad, level site, Cu Lai Pagoda follows the “Dinh” (丁) plan with three front bays (Tien Duong) and two rear bays (Hau Cung). The interior load-bearing frame is smoothly planed, showing minimal decorative sculpture. The system of Buddhist images has suffered damage over time, leaving only a few statues, including:
- The Three Buddhas (Tam The) symbolizing the eternal presence of the Buddha across past, present, and future;
- The Amitabha Buddha (A Di Da);
- The Jade Emperor;
- The Patron Saint (Duc Ong).
All statues exhibit refined craftsmanship typical of the Nguyen Dynasty (19th century) style.
Artifacts and Festivals
Beyond the Buddha statues, the pagoda preserves ritual objects such as altars, incense burners, and fruit pedestals. These relics, combined with the weathered patina of age, imbue the temple with a distinctive cultural aura.
Every year, on the 12th day of the 11th lunar month, the pagoda hosts its annual festival. In addition to traditional Buddhist rites, the festival features folk games such as wrestling, unicorn dance, cockfighting, and performances of Vietnamese traditional opera (cheo). These activities foster community warmth and solidarity among local villagers.
Classification
Cu Lai Pagoda was recognized as a City-level Historical and Cultural Site on January 28, 2005.

- La Triade des Trois Bouddhas (Tam The), symbolisant la présence éternelle du Bouddha dans le passé, le présent et le futur ;
- Le Bouddha Amitabha (A Di Da) ;
- L’Empereur de Jade ;
