Chùa Nga My, situated in the village of Hoang Mai, Hanoi, has a history spanning over 1,000 years. Constructed in 1497, the temple has undergone numerous renovations and restorations. Its unique architecture features the Three Gates, Front Hall, Upper Sanctuary, and Bell Tower. The temple preserves over 44 ancient Buddha statues, notably the 18th-century statue of Avalokiteshvara with a thousand arms and a thousand eyes, accompanied by a lotus pedestal.
The history of the temple, recorded on a stele in the 28th year of the Hong Duc era (1497), reveals its establishment right after King Ly Cong Uan relocated the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long. Initially built with bamboo and leaves, it was later reconstructed with durable tiles under the guidance of Princess, the daughter of King Le Thanh Tong, who served as the abbess. With an age exceeding 1,000 years, Nga My Temple stands as one of the oldest historical sites in Hanoi.
According to legend, the temple dates back to the reign of King Ly Thai To, constructed with wooden roofs and thatched materials, only to succumb to a devastating fire. In 1463, monk Thuan Trung reconstructed the temple. In 1497, Zen Master Phap Nguyen organized a major renovation. Throughout its history, renowned figures like Queen Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diem and various district lords and courtiers contributed to the embellishment, turning the temple into a picturesque and sacred destination.
Significant events include the restoration by Zen Master Tu Minh in 1711, the construction of the bell tower, and the carving of the Three Buddhas statue. The temple continued to undergo maintenance in 1815. In 1916, Venerable Thich Dam Quang assumed the position of abbot, overseeing further expansion and training for monks, as well as the annual residence for the monastic community.
From 1998 to 2002, Venerables Thich Dam Hao and Thich Dam Kim organized extensive renovations, transforming Nga My Temple into a serene and dignified cultural landmark of present-day Hanoi.
The temple’s architecture reflects Nguyen Dynasty influences, evident in the Three Gates, Front Hall, Upper Sanctuary, and Bell Tower. Notable details include gracefully decorated phoenix motifs atop the columns, protected staircases leading to the bell tower, and intricately carved details.
Nga My Temple, beyond being an architectural gem, houses over 44 rare Buddha statues. Of particular note is the Avalokiteshvara statue with its gentle countenance and finely detailed craftsmanship, reminiscent of the artistic style of But Thap Pagoda in Bac Ninh province. In 1994, the Ministry of Culture recognized Nga My Temple as a National Historical and Cultural Monument, underscoring its enduring cultural heritage.
