Name and Geographical Location
The Lại Đà communal house, pagoda, and temple relic complex is located beside the Đuống River, in Lại Đà Village, Đông Hội Commune, Đông Anh District, Hanoi, now Đông Anh Commune, Hanoi City. The relic lies in the riverside area of the Đuống River, within the long-established residential space of the Red River Delta communities.
Situated on the bank of the Đuống River, Cảnh Phúc Pagoda is not only a center of religious practice for the local community, but is also closely associated with the history of the formation and development of Lại Đà Village. Together with the village communal house and temple, the pagoda forms a traditional relic complex of historical, cultural, and architectural value, reflecting the rich spiritual life of riverside communities over many generations.
History and Associated Figures
According to local legend, Lại Đà Village was formed very early, around the same period as the ancient capital of Cổ Loa. Through many historical changes, the village has preserved the distinctive features of an ancient rural village in the Northern Delta, with a system of traditional relics consisting of a communal house, pagoda, and temple. Among them, Lại Đà Communal House worships Trạng nguyên Nguyễn Hiền, the temple worships Holy Mother Tiên Dung, and Cảnh Phúc Pagoda serves as the center of religious activities for the local residential community.
According to the village deity genealogy, Lại Đà Communal House was built sometime after 1276. Initially, the structure took the form of a temple; by the late eighteenth century, it was converted into a village communal house. The present structure was rebuilt in 1853 and has undergone several restorations, of which the largest-scale renovation took place in 2002–2003. The communal house is situated on a spacious plot of land whose terrain is popularly called “a crouching tiger.” Its front faces the fields and the Đuống River, creating an architectural and landscape space that is harmonious and rich in feng-shui significance.
Lại Đà Communal House venerates Trạng nguyên Nguyễn Hiền, 1235–1256, a native of Vương Miện Village, Thượng Hiền District, now part of Nam Thắng Commune, Nam Trực District, Nam Định Province. He was renowned for his intelligence from childhood and passed the Thái học sinh doctoral examination in the Đinh Mùi year, 1247, under the reign of King Trần Thái Tông, when he was only thirteen years old. He thus became the youngest Trạng nguyên, or First Laureate, in the history of Vietnamese examinations.
According to local tradition and folk sources, after achieving academic success, Nguyễn Hiền participated in court affairs and made many contributions in the fields of military affairs, water management, and agricultural development. When he passed away in the Bính Tý year, 1256, at the age of twenty-one, he was posthumously honored by the royal court as a tutelary deity and was worshiped in temples established by people in many localities. Lại Đà Communal House is one of the places of worship dedicated to Nguyễn Hiền with a large scale and a long history.
Situated immediately to the east of the communal house is Cảnh Phúc Pagoda, or Cảnh Phúc Tự, an ancient pagoda with a long history closely connected to the religious life of Lại Đà residents. Based on the architectural traces and artifacts still preserved, it may be determined that the existing pagoda was built or extensively restored during the Later Lê period, although it is possible that a pagoda had already existed here since the Trần dynasty. Over time and through war, the pagoda repeatedly deteriorated and was restored by the local people. In 2003, the Patriarch Hall was rebuilt; in 2004, the Three Jewels Hall was reconstructed through socialized funding, giving the pagoda the spacious and dignified appearance it has today.
To the west of the communal house is Lại Đà Temple, also known as Lại Đà Shrine, dedicated to Holy Mother Tiên Dung. According to local legend, Tiên Dung was a deity who gave spiritual support to Nguyễn Hiền in his service to the country and was conferred the title of beneficent deity by the Trần court. The temple is believed to have been built after Nguyễn Hiền’s death, around the late thirteenth century. Initially small in scale, it was expanded and restored in the 10th year of the Khải Định reign, 1925. Every year, on the 11th day of the third lunar month, traditional rituals are held at the temple with the participation of a female ceremonial team dressed in ritual costumes, contributing to the preservation of the distinctive cultural and religious values of the locality.
The Lại Đà communal house, pagoda, and temple relic complex is therefore not only a place preserving historical memory of Trạng nguyên Nguyễn Hiền, but also a site reflecting the interaction between folk beliefs and Buddhism in the traditional cultural life of the riverside communities along the Đuống River.
Architecture
The Lại Đà relic complex, consisting of the communal house, pagoda, and temple, is planned within a unified cultural space, harmonious with the landscape of an ancient village in the Red River Delta. Within this overall layout, the communal house occupies the central position, the pagoda lies to the east, and the temple is situated to the west, forming a complete religious architectural complex that clearly reflects the traditional spatial structure of Northern Vietnamese villages.
Cảnh Phúc Pagoda is located immediately to the east of the village communal house and is the principal religious structure within the relic complex. The pagoda space is organized along a traditional longitudinal axis, consisting of the Three-Entrance Gate, the pagoda courtyard, and the main architectural blocks. The Three-Entrance Gate was built in the 8th year of the Cảnh Thịnh reign, 1800, during the final period of the Tây Sơn dynasty. The structure has two levels and eight roofs in a stacked-roof style, with gently curved upturned roof corners, creating an elegant and imposing appearance. The lower level opens into three symmetrical passageways, while the upper level functions as a bell tower with a wooden floor system and traditional bell-hanging structure.
Beyond the Three-Entrance Gate is a broad brick-paved courtyard leading to the Three Jewels Hall in front and the Rear Hall behind. These two architectural blocks are connected by a roofed corridor, forming a continuous connection within the overall ground plan. The present Three Jewels Hall was reconstructed on the foundation of the old pagoda after many periods of deterioration. It is relatively large in scale, with a reinforced concrete structure combined with traditional architectural elements. Behind it is the Rear Hall, consisting of five bays and two side compartments, arranged in the shape of the Chinese character Đinh (丁). It serves both as a place for worshiping the patriarchs and as a venue for the Buddhist activities of the pagoda. Behind the Rear Hall are the monks’ quarters and the stupa garden, creating a quiet, enclosed space suited to religious practice.
Lại Đà Communal House is built on an elevated plot of land called Hoàng Hổ and faces south toward the fields and the Đuống River in the distance. According to folk feng-shui belief, the entire plot of land is compared to the form of a crouching tiger, with two round wells in front symbolizing the tiger’s eyes, helping to create the sacred terrain of the communal house. The present structure is large in scale, symmetrical in layout, and bears the strong architectural style of a nineteenth-century Northern Vietnamese village communal house.
The communal house roof is covered with dragon-scale tiles; the roof ridge runs straight and is decorated with lemon-flower motifs and soaring curved ridge-end ornaments. The interior of the main hall consists of six structural frames built in the “giá chiêng chồng rường” style, combined with a system of large wooden columns that create a spacious and sturdy interior. Decorative details are concentrated on bracket ends, carved panels, and ceremonial door frames, with motifs of stylized flowers and foliage, swirling clouds, and traditional sacred animals. At the center of the rear sanctuary are placed the throne and spirit tablet of Trạng nguyên Nguyễn Hiền, the principal object of worship in the communal house.
Lại Đà Temple is located to the west of the communal house and is dedicated to Holy Mother Tiên Dung, a beneficent deity honored by local people for having helped Trạng nguyên Nguyễn Hiền according to local legend. The temple is smaller in scale than the communal house and pagoda but still preserves the characteristics of traditional religious architecture. The structure consists of two buildings arranged according to a ground plan in the shape of the Chinese character Nhị (二), with a wooden frame combined with masonry gable walls. The “giá chiêng” roof-frame system, together with carved panels depicting dragons, apricot blossoms, and chrysanthemums transforming into dragons, demonstrates a fairly refined level of folk artistry. The interior worship space is arranged solemnly with a shrine cabinet and traditional ritual objects, most notably a large horizontal inscribed board bearing the words “Thánh Cung Vạn Tuế.”
Overall, the Lại Đà communal house, pagoda, and temple complex is valuable not only in terms of architectural and artistic merit, but also as a distinctive cultural and religious space, reflecting the harmonious combination of Buddhism, village tutelary deity worship, and Mother Goddess worship in the spiritual life of Northern Delta residents.
Artifacts
The Lại Đà communal house, pagoda, and temple relic complex currently preserves many artifacts of historical, cultural, and artistic value, reflecting the long process of formation, existence, and development of the relic.
Among the most representative artifacts is the bronze bell of Cảnh Phúc Pagoda, cast in the Giáp Thìn year, the 4th year of the Thiệu Trị reign, 1844. According to the inscription on the bell, the casting began on the 16th day of the first lunar month and was completed on the 29th day of the second lunar month of the same year. The list of donors involved in the casting of the bell records a doctoral laureate surnamed Vũ who passed the Hội examination in the Bính Tuất year, 1826. Comparing this with the examination records of the Nguyễn dynasty, there were only two doctoral laureates surnamed Vũ in that examination: Vũ Tông Phan and Vũ Đức Mẫn. Among them, Vũ Tông Phan was a famous scholar who once held the position of Provincial Education Commissioner of Bắc Ninh; therefore, it is highly possible that he participated in or contributed to the creation of this bell.
Cảnh Phúc Pagoda also preserves a relatively complete system of Buddhist statues, reflecting layers of belief and sculptural art from various periods. In particular, the set of Buddhas of the Three Times, symbolizing the past, present, and future, was created in the artistic style of the eighteenth century, with balanced forms, gentle lines, and the characteristic red-lacquered and gilded technique of traditional Buddhist art in the Northern Delta.
In addition, the pagoda preserves many other valuable artifacts such as ritual implements, horizontal lacquered boards, parallel sentences, ceremonial door frames, and elaborately carved wooden decorative components, showing the technical skill and aesthetic sense of folk artisans through different periods.
At Lại Đà Communal House, many valuable ritual artifacts are still preserved, including two incense altars, one worship throne, eleven boxes for storing ceremonial clothes, hats, and boots used in traditional rituals, as well as systems of horizontal lacquered boards, parallel sentences, royal decrees, village conventions, regulations, and communal agreements. These are valuable sources for the study of the administrative history, beliefs, and social life of the local residential community.
The temple dedicated to Holy Mother Tiên Dung also preserves many relics dating from the same general period as the village communal house, notably the shrine cabinet, worship statues, and traditional ritual objects. These artifacts are valuable not only artistically, but also in reflecting the development of Mother Goddess worship in the spiritual and cultural life of Lại Đà residents over many generations.
The parallel sentences at the temple read:
“Nhập môn giả năng vô tham sân si thị xuất gia nhi cầu quy y đắc quy y phúc địa
Tương lai kỳ tất hữu quảng đại thắng sử hiện tại bất vi quá khứ hựu quá khứ thời kỳ”
Tentatively translated as:
“Those who enter this gate and are free from greed, anger, and delusion are those who have renounced worldly life; those who seek refuge shall attain refuge in this blessed land.
In the future, there will surely be a vast and victorious age; the present will not be like the past, and the past will again become the time of the past.”
Events and Festivals
To commemorate the merits of Trạng nguyên Nguyễn Hiền, the tutelary deity worshiped by the people at Lại Đà Communal House, every year from the 10th to the 11th day of the third lunar month, the locality holds a solemn traditional festival at the Lại Đà communal house, pagoda, and temple relic complex. This is the most important cultural and religious event of the year for the local community, and also an occasion for villagers and visitors from near and far to return to their roots and express gratitude to a predecessor who rendered service to the people and the country.
The ceremonial part is conducted according to traditional rites, including incense offerings, deity worship, processions, and the reading of ritual orations to commemorate the merits of Trạng nguyên Nguyễn Hiền and the other deities jointly worshiped within the relic. The festival space bears the strong cultural character of Northern Delta village life, expressing reverence for historical figures of merit and contributing to the education of later generations in the tradition of respect for learning.
After the rituals comes the festive part, with many folk cultural activities and rich communal gatherings. In the past, the festival was famous for traditional cultural activities such as Chinese chess, hát văn spirit-mediumship singing, chèo opera, and many distinctive folk games. Today, alongside the maintenance of certain traditional elements, the festival has also been supplemented with artistic performances, sports competitions, and community exchange activities, creating a joyful and cohesive atmosphere that attracts large numbers of participants.
Heritage Designation
The Lại Đà communal house, pagoda, and temple relic complex was classified by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a National Architectural and Artistic Relic on 5 September 1989.
