History and Historical Figure

Emperor Le Du Tong Hoa was the 21st emperor of the Le dynasty, reigning during a period when the country entered a phase of relative stability after the prolonged upheavals of the 17th century. His personal name was Le Duy Duong. He was the grandson of King Le Than Tong and the eldest son of King Le Hy Tong. His mother was Empress Dowager On Tu, Nguyen Thi Ngoc De, a native of Sung Quan Village, Dong Ngan District, in the former Kinh Bac region.

On the 17th day of the first lunar month of the At Dau year (1705), Le Du Tong officially ascended the throne. Throughout his reign, he successively used two era names, Vinh Thinh and Bao Thai, ruling for a total of 25 years. This was a long and relatively peaceful reign in a context where real political power lay in the hands of the Trinh lords; nevertheless, the Le court continued to maintain its symbolic authority and to preside over state rituals.

The reign of Le Du Tong is recorded as one of the rare periods of peace during the Restored Le dynasty. The country did not face major wars; society maintained order, and the legal system was strictly enforced. The king advocated leniency in punishments, encouraged moral education, and placed special emphasis on the selection of talented individuals, particularly through military examinations, in order to strengthen the court’s armed forces. As a result, political and social life remained relatively stable, creating favorable conditions for economic and cultural development.

Contemporary and later historians alike have given positive assessments of this reign. Lich trieu tap ky by Ngo Cao Lanh regarded it as a period in which laws and institutions were complete, discipline was clear, domestic affairs were peaceful, and foreign relations were handled with flexibility. The king was described as a ruler who inherited and preserved a state of good governance, without resorting to harsh measures, yet ensuring the smooth functioning of the court.

In terms of spiritual life, Le Du Tong was noted for his strong devotion to Buddhism. While on the throne, he frequently visited ancient temples in Thang Long, associated with monks, and listened to explanations of Buddhist scriptures. After abdicating in favor of his son, he devoted most of his time to the study of Buddhism. Although he did not formally renounce worldly life, he maintained a simple and tranquil lifestyle and was regarded by contemporaries as a monarch with the demeanor of a sage.

In the Ky Dau year (1729), Le Du Tong was forced by An Do Vuong Trinh Cuong to abdicate in favor of Crown Prince Le Duy Phuong and move to Kien Tho Palace, where he took the title Thuan Thien thua van Hoang thuong.

On the 20th day of the first lunar month of the Tan Hoi year (1731), King Le Du Tong passed away at the age of 52. His remains were initially buried at Co Do Tomb, and later reinterred in the Kim Thach area, now Bai Trach Village, Xuan Giang Commune, Tho Xuan District, Thanh Hoa Province. The king’s tomb was discovered in 1958, and in 1964 it was archaeologically excavated by decision of the Ministry of Culture. Artifacts were transferred for preservation and research to the Vietnam History Museum, contributing important materials for a clearer understanding of the historical profile of the Restored Le dynasty.

Architectural Landscape

The tomb complex of King Le Du Tong was planned on a relatively complete overall layout, covering an area of approximately 5,000 m², clearly reflecting the spatial organization principles of royal tomb architecture of the Restored Le period. The entire complex is arranged along a central axis, strictly adhering to traditional feng shui principles and harmoniously combining built structures with the natural landscape.

At the center of the complex is the main tomb, large in scale, solid in structure, and compact in form, creating a sense of grandeur and solemnity. The architectural form emphasizes stability and permanence, characteristic of royal tomb architecture, while also reflecting the concept of the eternity of dynastic power.

In front of the tomb is a semicircular pond, which serves both to regulate the microclimate and to fulfill an important feng shui function, forming the configuration known as “minh duong tu thuy” (the bright court gathering water), enhancing the sacredness and balance of the overall space. The water element, combined with surrounding vegetation, softens the architectural composition and creates a gentle transition between spatial layers.

Along the approach axis and around the tomb complex is a system of stone statues and sacred animals arranged according to ritual order in two symmetrical rows. These serve both a symbolic guarding function and a visual guiding role, leading visitors toward the central space. The statues are carved from stone with refined sculptural techniques, balanced proportions, and firm lines, reflecting the high artistic standards and craftsmanship of artisans of the time.

Overall, the tomb complex of King Le Du Tong is a representative example of landscape architecture, in which stone sculpture, the creation of ritual imagery, and construction techniques reached a high level of completion. It clearly embodies the court architectural style of the Restored Le period and affirms the site’s outstanding historical, artistic, and landscape value.
