Thông tin cơ bản

Tên gọi và vị trí địa lý

Lăng Trường Thanh là nơi an táng chúa Nguyễn Phúc Chu (1675 – 1725), tức Hiển Tôn Hiếu Minh Hoàng đế.

Name and Geographic Location

Truong Thanh Mausoleum is the burial site of Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu (1675–1725), posthumously honored as Hien Ton Hieu Minh Hoang De. He was the sixth Nguyen Lord of Dang Trong (Inner Realm) and was commonly known as Lord Minh or Quoc Chua (National Lord).

Truong Thanh Mausoleum is located in the Kim Ngoc mountain area, Kim Ngoc Hamlet, Huong Tho Commune, Huong Tra Town, Hue. The monument lies on the left bank of the Ta Trach River, approximately 250 meters from the riverbank according to current measurements (whereas some older documents recorded about 800 meters). From the center of Hue City, the mausoleum is about 10.5 kilometers southwest in a straight line.

Truong Thanh Mausoleum is situated approximately 350 meters northeast of Truong Mau Mausoleum, the burial place of Lord Nguyen Phuc Thai. Both belong to the cluster of Nguyen Lords’ mausoleums concentrated in the Kim Ngoc – Huong Tho area.

History and Historical Figure
Construction and Restoration History

Nguyen Phuc Chu passed away on the 21st day of the 4th lunar month in the year At Ty (1725), at the age of 51. After his death, he was buried in Kim Ngoc Village (Huong Tra District, Thua Thien Prefecture; now part of Huong Tho Commune, Hue City).

In 1790, during the upheavals of the Tay Son period, the mausoleum was destroyed.

According to Kham dinh Dai Nam hoi dien su le (Ministry of Public Works, Volume 216), in 1808 Emperor Gia Long ordered the reconstruction and restoration of 17 mausoleums of the Nguyen Lords and their consorts. The tomb of Nguyen Phuc Chu was rebuilt during this campaign and was officially named Truong Thanh.

Subsequently, the mausoleum was further repaired in the 21st year of Minh Mang (1840) and the first year of Thieu Tri (1841), demonstrating the Nguyen dynasty’s continued attention to the pre-dynastic mausoleum system.

More recently, in 2009 and 2015, the Nguyen Phuoc Clan Council organized restoration and reinforcement of several components to preserve the monument amid natural deterioration over time.

Historical Figure

Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu (1675–1725), temple name Nguyen Hien Tong, was the sixth Nguyen Lord ruling Dang Trong (1691–1725) and one of the longest-reigning lords (34 years). He was the eldest son of Lord Nguyen Phuc Thai (Lord Nghia); his mother was Tong Thi Linh, daughter of the official Tong Phuc Vinh.

Renowned for intelligence from a young age, he was trained in both civil and military arts. Before ascending the throne, he served as Deputy Commander of the Left Infantry Division and held the title To Truong Hau. In 1691, at the age of 17, he succeeded to power and assumed full authority over Dang Trong.

Domestic Governance:
Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu emphasized the recruitment and respect of talented scholars, reduced taxation, economized state expenditures, and moderated penal law, thereby maintaining social stability during a period when the Trinh–Nguyen conflict had temporarily subsided. A devout patron of Buddhism, he restored and constructed major temples such as Thien Mu Pagoda, invited the Zen master Thich Dai San to confer monastic precepts, cast a great bell, and organized large-scale ordination ceremonies. However, in 1699, the court promulgated a ban on Christianity to control Western influence.

Defense and Foreign Relations:
He reinforced northern defensive lines to maintain balance with the Trinh Lords and dispatched envoys to the Qing court in 1702 seeking investiture, though unsuccessfully. In the same year, Nguyen forces suppressed English pirates in Con Lon.

Territorial Expansion:

In 1692, he defeated Champa and established Thuan Thanh Garrison (later reorganized as a tributary polity).

From 1690 to 1714, he intervened repeatedly in Cambodian affairs to maintain influence.

In 1708, he accepted Mac Cuu’s submission, formally incorporating Ha Tien into the administrative system.

He appointed Nguyen Huu Canh to organize the southern territories, establishing Gia Dinh Prefecture and founding Tran Bien and Phien Tran Garrisons—an important turning point in the southward expansion (Nam Tien).

Overall, the reign of Nguyen Phuc Chu marked a period of strengthened internal governance, territorial expansion, and vigorous cultural and religious development, bringing Dang Trong to one of its most stable and prosperous phases under the Nguyen Lords.

Architectural Landscape

The mausoleum stands on a high hill, facing southeast. In front lies an open expanse of fields forming a broad minh duong (bright hall), providing an unobstructed view; from the foot of the hill, a system of steps leads up to the entrance gate.

The architectural layout follows the common pattern of Nguyen Lords’ mausoleums, with two rectangular enclosure walls surrounding the tomb area:

Outer enclosure: perimeter approximately 120.5 meters; height 1.96 meters, defining the outer boundary.

Inner enclosure: perimeter approximately 70.3 meters; height 2.05 meters, directly protecting the central tomb area.

The gate pillars of the inner enclosure are decorated with qilin motifs, symbolizing nobility and sacredness.

The tomb consists of two stepped rectangular tiers:

Upper tier: width 1.36 m; length 2.12 m; height 0.22 m.

Lower tier: width 1.93 m; length 2.58 m; height 0.27 m.

In front of the tomb stands an altar table (huong an), which remains relatively intact and holds significant aesthetic value. Behind the tomb is a screen wall still clearly bearing a central dragon motif, with chrysanthemum on the left and pine on the right—decorative symbols of auspiciousness, longevity, and authority.

Although modest in scale, the mausoleum is balanced and harmoniously integrated with the elevated terrain and the agricultural landscape in front. It exemplifies the early-period Nguyen Lords’ funerary architecture: simple, solemn, and closely connected to the natural environment.

Classification

Truong Thanh Mausoleum was recognized by the Provincial People’s Committee as a provincial-level historical monument in 2018.

Niveau supérieur : largeur 1,36 m ; longueur 2,12 m ; hauteur 0,22 m.

Niveau inférieur : largeur 1,93 m ; longueur 2,58 m ; hauteur 0,27 m.
