Name and Geographic Location

Boi Ha Communal House is an ancient communal house of the former Boi Ha village, now located in Cau Giay  Ward, Hanoi. In the traditional structure of Vietnamese villages, the communal house served both as a place for worshiping the village tutelary deity and as a communal space where villagers gathered for ceremonies, meetings, and cultural–religious activities.

Boi Ha Communal House stands near Ha Pagoda, forming a characteristic complex of religious and spiritual monuments in the Dich Vong area. Situated within an old residential quarter, the communal house continues to play an important role in the cultural and spiritual life of the local community.

History and Historical Figures

Boi Ha Communal House is dedicated to Trieu Chi Thanh. According to folk tradition, he was the son of Trieu Xuong and Ly Thi Thich, originally from Chu Dien hamlet in the region of ancient Thai Binh (now belonging to Me Linh District).

In the year 545, the Liang Dynasty of China invaded Vietnam. During this time, Trieu Quang Phuc led resistance forces against the Liang army. Initially he stationed his troops in the Tu Liem area before retreating to the Dam Da Trach base to organize a prolonged resistance.

According to legend, during this period Trieu Quang Phuc was given a dragon claw by Chu Dong Tu to craft a sacred crossbow. Trieu Chi Thanh was entrusted with the task of making this special weapon. Thanks to his skill, the divine crossbow was said to strike its targets with perfect accuracy; each shot could eliminate hundreds of enemy soldiers and even enemy generals. As a result, the Liang forces suffered repeated defeats and eventually withdrew northward in 550.

After the victory, Trieu Chi Thanh was appointed Do Thong Nguyen Soai (Supreme Commander) by Trieu Quang Phuc and stationed in the area that is now Dich Vong.

Later, when he became seriously ill, Trieu Viet Vuong visited him and asked about his final wish. Trieu Chi Thanh requested only that the command banner granted by the king be released into the sky; wherever the banner landed, the inhabitants of that place would be exempt from taxes and forced labor. The king agreed to this request.

On the twelfth day of the eighth lunar month, Trieu Chi Thanh passed away. Trieu Viet Vuong then ordered an envoy to cast the command banner into the sky. The banner eventually descended at Dich Vong Trung hamlet. Upon hearing this news, the king ordered a temple to be built there and conferred upon him the title Dai Vuong (Great King), establishing him as the tutelary deity protecting the people of Boi Ha village.

In local folk tradition, a verse praising Dai Vuong Trieu Chi Thanh has been preserved:

“Majestic stands a heroic figure,
Growing in virtue and noble character.”

Boi Ha Communal House is also associated with events during the revolutionary struggle. On August 15, 1945, at Boi Ha Communal House and Ha Pagoda, Nguyen Quyet chaired a meeting of armed cadres and propaganda forces of the city to discuss and prepare revolutionary activities in the historic moment preceding the General Uprising.

The communal house has also had the honor of receiving visits from high-ranking leaders of the Party, the State, and the city of Hanoi. In 2001, Nguyen Phu Trong, then Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, visited the site. Other leaders such as Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and Vuong Dinh Hue (when he served as Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee) also came to visit and work at the monument, demonstrating the attention given by national and municipal leadership to the preservation and promotion of this historical–cultural heritage site.

Over many centuries, Boi Ha Communal House has undergone several restorations and renovations but has continued to play an important role in the cultural and spiritual life of the local community. In recent decades, the monument has been further preserved through restoration projects carried out by Cau Giay District authorities in 1998 and 2014, contributing to the protection and promotion of its historical and cultural value.

Architecture and Landscape

In general, Boi Ha Communal House reflects the artistic architectural style of the Nguyen Dynasty and consists of several main components, including the ceremonial gate, the main hall (dai dinh), and auxiliary structures.

The ceremonial gate (nghi mon) of the communal house consists of two sections: the outer gate and the inner gate.

The outer gate is relatively large and proportionate to the entrance of the adjacent Ha Pagoda. The structure features four decorative pillars arranged according to traditional architectural style. The two central pillars are taller and topped with four phoenix motifs, while the two side pillars are lower and crowned with statues of nghe (mythical guardian animals). The upper sections of the pillars are decorated with lantern-shaped panels, while the lower sections bear parallel couplets. The bases of the pillars are shaped in the traditional co bong style.

Between the four pillars is a roofed structure, with the central roof covering the arched main entrance. Two side roofs shelter walls decorated with reliefs depicting two guardian figures standing in attendance. Outside the pillar row are two secondary gates with four-sided roofs, forming an imposing entrance arrangement.

Passing through the outer gate leads to the communal courtyard, which consists of two levels; the inner courtyard is two steps higher than the outer one. At the boundary between the two courtyards stands the inner gate, also composed of four traditional pillars.

The central structure of the complex is the dai dinh (main communal hall), which has a ground plan in the shape of the Chinese character Đinh (丁), resembling a T-shaped layout. It consists of the main worship hall and the rear sanctuary.

The main hall (dai bai) is built on a stone platform three steps higher than the courtyard and has five compartments with four roofs. On the roof ridge is a decorative pair of dragons flanking the sun. The front façade features a system of wooden panel doors. Unlike many traditional communal houses whose central floor is lower than the side sections (forming a boat-shaped floor), the floor of Boi Ha Communal House is level throughout, creating a more unified interior space.

Inside the communal house are preserved numerous ritual objects such as horizontal lacquered boards, parallel couplets, ceremonial weapons, bronze incense burners, royal thrones, spirit tablets, and a pair of cranes standing on the backs of turtles—familiar decorative elements in Vietnamese communal house architecture.

Behind the main hall is the three-compartment rear sanctuary (hau cung), where the altar of Dai Vuong Trieu Chi Thanh is placed. This is the most sacred worship space of the communal house.

Events and Festivals

A local verse says:

“Along the To River echoes the pagoda bell,
Who will join the festival at Ha Pagoda and Ha Communal House?”

The festival of Boi Ha Communal House is a traditional celebration with a long history closely linked to the religious life of the former Boi Ha villagers. According to ancient customs, twice each year in spring and autumn the villagers of Boi Ha would bring offerings to conduct rituals at Tho Thap Communal House. Additionally, every few years a ceremonial procession would carry the palanquin of the Younger Saint to visit the Elder Saint, symbolizing the close relationship between the two villages and their shared reverence for their tutelary deities.

In recent years, the Boi Ha Communal House festival has been revived according to traditional rituals. The palanquin procession is conducted solemnly, recreating ancient ceremonial practices of the village. At the same time, the festival section has restored many folk games and traditional cultural activities, helping to preserve the community’s cultural heritage.

According to village custom, the elders of Boi Ha select the ninth day of the third lunar month each year—the birth anniversary of Chu Ly—to bring offerings and join the people of Tho Thap village in conducting worship ceremonies at Tho Thap Communal House.

At Boi Ha Communal House itself, the main festivals are held on two important dates each year: the eleventh day of the first lunar month, commemorating the birth of Trieu Chi Thanh, and the twelfth day of the eighth lunar month, considered the day of his deification.

During the festival, local residents prepare offerings, organize palanquin processions, and burn incense in remembrance of the village tutelary deity. The celebration not only honors the contributions of the general who helped Trieu Quang Phuc defeat the invading Liang forces but also provides an opportunity for villagers from surrounding hamlets to gather, socialize, and strengthen community ties.

The festival consists of two main parts: the ceremonial section and the festive section. The ceremonial part is conducted solemnly with traditional rituals such as incense offerings, sacrificial rites, and deity processions. The festive part features lively folk cultural activities, creating a joyful atmosphere while preserving communal cultural values passed down through many generations.

Classification

Boi Ha Communal House was recognized as a Historical and Cultural Monument under Decision No. 2012/QD-UBND issued on May 16, 2012 by the Hanoi People’s Committee.
