Time of Organization

The Cua Ong Temple Festival is held annually from the 2nd day of the first lunar month until the end of the third lunar month. In addition, the festival is also celebrated in early spring on the 3rd–4th days of the second lunar month and in early autumn on the 3rd–4th days of the eighth lunar month, in commemoration of the merits of Hung Nhuong Vuong Tran Quoc Tang and the generals of the Tran dynasty who defended the northeastern region.

During the autumn season, the festival typically begins with solemn rituals such as the ceremonial drum and gong performance to open the festival, incense offerings in remembrance of Tran Quoc Tang, and worship ceremonies dedicated to Hung Nhuong Dai Vuong and other deified figures at the Upper Temple, the Mother Goddess Temple, and the Trung Thien Long Mau Temple. There are also ceremonies marking the death anniversaries of Hung Nhuong Vuong Tran Quoc Tang and Hung Dao Dai Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan.

Location

The festival takes place at Cua Ong Temple, located along Bai Tu Long Bay in Cam Pha, Quang Ninh Province.

Cua Ong Temple is one of the most prominent historical sites associated with the Tran dynasty in northeastern Vietnam. The complex consists of three main sections: the Lower Temple, the Middle Temple, and the Upper Temple, arranged in a tripod formation facing Bai Tu Long Bay. During wartime, the Middle and Lower Temples were destroyed; the Lower Temple has since been restored.

The temple complex is situated on gentle hills interspersed with ancient trees, creating a harmonious landscape of mountains, forests, and sea. In front of the temple lies Bai Tu Long Bay, dotted with numerous islands rising from the emerald waters. The site was once praised with the verse:

“A thousand layers of blue water spread like flowing sleeves,
Mountains on all sides form a painted landscape.”

The architecture of the temple incorporates traditional materials such as molded stone, Bat Trang bricks, mortar mixed with molasses, fired clay bricks, and curved roof tiles. Inside, valuable woods such as ironwood, lim, rosewood, and ebony are used. The beams, columns, and pillars are intricately carved with motifs of dragons, kylins, turtles, and phoenixes, along with many gilded lacquered panels and parallel sentences.

Today, the temple preserves 34 statues of various sizes, finely carved, along with numerous legends, royal decrees, and historical documents from different dynasties. These are valuable sources for studying the history of nation-building and defense during the Tran dynasty. Despite wars and historical changes, the complex still retains some ancient architectural features and statues dating back to the 19th century.

History

Cua Ong Temple is dedicated to Tran Quoc Tang, the third son of Tran Hung Dao. He was a talented general of the Tran dynasty, who made significant contributions during the resistance wars against the Mongol–Yuan invaders and in safeguarding the northeastern frontier.

The temple also worships many other Tran dynasty generals and local figures who contributed to the nation, including Hoang Cau, a military leader who helped defend the region.

According to legend, the site originally consisted of a small thatched shrine beneath an ancient tree near the Suot estuary. Over time, due to its sacredness and the reverence of the people, the shrine was expanded into a major spiritual center in the region.

For more than 700 years, Cua Ong Temple has undergone several restorations while still preserving its distinctive traditional architecture. Today, it is considered one of the most beautiful temples in Vietnam.

The complex includes various structures such as the Lower, Middle, and Upper Temples, the mausoleum of Tran Quoc Tang, Quan Chau Temple, Quan Chanh Temple, and others. It is also one of the rare temples that fully worship the family of Tran Hung Dao and his close generals.

Rituals (Ceremonial Part)

The ceremonial part of the Cua Ong Temple Festival is conducted solemnly, featuring traditional rituals such as opening the festival with drums and gongs, offering incense in remembrance, and conducting worship ceremonies for Tran Quoc Tang and the generals of the Tran dynasty.

In the past, the main festival day took place on the 2nd day of the third lunar month. On this occasion, local people organized a procession carrying the spirit tablet of Tran Quoc Tang from the temple to a shrine in Trac Chan commune, known in folklore as “Vuon Nhan” (Longan Garden), believed to be the place where his body once drifted ashore. After the ceremony, the procession returned the tablet to the temple, symbolizing his journey.

Today, during festival periods, ritual teams along with large numbers of local residents and visitors from many regions gather to offer incense and commemorate his contributions.

Festive Activities (Entertainment Part)

During the festival season, Cua Ong Temple welcomes large numbers of visitors from across the country. Visitors can reach the site by road via Ha Long City or by water through Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay, docking near the Lower Temple area.

The festival atmosphere is lively, with activities such as sightseeing, pilgrimage, incense offering, and enjoying the scenic beauty of the harmonious landscape of mountains and sea. The festival serves as an occasion for people to honor the contributions of their ancestors, while also offering visitors an opportunity to explore the history and culture of the northeastern region.

Recognition

In 2017, Cua Ong Temple was officially recognized by the Prime Minister as a Special National Historical Site.

In addition, the Cua Ong Temple Festival has been recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. The annual festival not only expresses gratitude to past generations but also contributes to preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of the nation.
