Background

Lê Lý (1374–1443), also known as Nguyễn Lý, was one of the military commanders who remained closely associated with Lê Lợi from the earliest stage of his cause. He was a native of Dao Xá hamlet in Lam Sơn, an area now belonging to Xuân Lam Commune, Thọ Xuân District, Thanh Hóa Province. This was also a region directly connected with the Lam Sơn base and the formation of the insurgent forces led by Lê Lợi. Compared with many other figures of the same period, relatively little information survives concerning Lê Lý’s origins and private life; the official histories primarily record his activities from the time he joined the uprising and his years of military service and achievement.

Lê Lý belonged to the group of men who followed Lê Lợi even before the uprising officially began. In 1416, he joined Lê Lợi and his close commanders in the Lũng Nhai Oath. The Đại Việt thông sử records that when Lê Lợi and eighteen of his close retainers jointly swore the oath, Lê Lý was among them. His presence at the Lũng Nhai Oath marked his association with the core group gathered around Lê Lợi in preparation for the resistance against the Ming.

Historical Context

Lê Lý was active during a particularly significant period in the history of Đại Việt, when the country was under Ming rule. The Lam Sơn uprising broke out in 1418 under circumstances in which the balance of forces between the insurgents and the Ming army was extremely unequal. During the early years, the insurgents had to move constantly, relying on mountainous and forested terrain to preserve their forces while organizing small-scale engagements and ambushes to gradually weaken the enemy.

In the early years, Lê Lý mainly participated in battles to defend the base and repel Ming offensives. He later took part in campaigns in Nghệ An, where the insurgents gradually expanded the territory under their control. By 1426, when the Lam Sơn army advanced northward, he was assigned to attack Xương Giang Citadel and took part in guarding the southern gate of Đông Quan. In 1427, he directly participated in the campaign that destroyed the major Ming relief army at Xương Giang.

Career

Participation in the Uprising from Its Earliest Stage

In 1418, a large Ming army under the command of the eunuch Mã Kỳ advanced toward Lam Sơn in an attempt to threaten and destroy Lê Lợi’s forces. Faced with this situation, Lê Lợi withdrew to Lạc Thủy and arranged an ambush to await the enemy.

When the Ming army arrived on the thirteenth day of the first lunar month, Lê Lợi ordered the troops lying in ambush to launch a simultaneous attack. Lê Lý, together with Lê Thạch, Đinh Bồ, Lê Ngân, and other commanders, led the charge and directly broke into the enemy formation. The insurgents killed more than 3,000 Ming troops, seized military supplies and weapons, and then withdrew to Chí Linh Mountain.

The Battle of Lạc Thủy was of considerable importance during the early stage of the uprising. At a time when the insurgent forces remained weak, victories of this kind helped Lê Lợi preserve his army and created conditions for the resistance to continue. For Lê Lý, this was one of the earliest military achievements recorded in historical sources and demonstrated that he belonged to the group of commanders who directly took part in some of the most dangerous battles of the uprising’s early years.

Afterward, Lê Lý continued to fight alongside Lê Lợi in the Chí Linh region. In 1420, when Lê Lợi was encamped at Mường Thôi, Ming forces commanded by Lý Bân and Phương Chính, described in the sources as very numerous, advanced against the insurgents. Lê Lợi ordered Lê Lý, together with Phạm Vấn and Lý Triện, to move ahead of the main force, intercept the enemy, and establish an ambush at Bồ Mộng.

When the Ming forces advanced, the insurgents attacked and inflicted heavy losses upon them. Relying on their numerical superiority, however, the Ming continued advancing toward Lê Lợi’s camp. The insurgents then established another ambush at Thi Lang and launched a surprise attack. In this battle, the Ming army suffered severe losses, with more than 3,000 men killed, while the commanders Lý An and Phương Chính were forced to flee.

Following this victory, the insurgent army continued its advance. Lê Lý took part in defending Lam Sơn, fighting at Trà Lân, attacking the Khả Lưu pass, and besieging Nghệ An. He fought in dozens of battles and repeatedly distinguished himself, gradually being promoted to the office of Thiếu úy.

His achievements during this period show that Lê Lý was not only one of the early participants in the uprising, but also one of the commanders whose development can be clearly traced through actual battlefield experience. From defending the main base, he gradually came to be entrusted with military missions of increasing scale, joining the insurgent army in expanding its sphere of operations and helping bring about a shift in the overall military situation.

From Nghệ An to the Northern Front

After consolidating its forces and expanding its area of operations, the Lam Sơn army gradually shifted its strategic direction. Nghệ An became an important region for building up forces and opening the way for the advance northward. During this stage, Lê Lý participated in the battles of Trà Lân and Khả Lưu and in the operations surrounding Nghệ An.

His repeated presence in major campaigns demonstrates the confidence Lê Lợi placed in him. From serving as a Deputy Commander of a cavalry guard in the Thiết Đột army, Lê Lý gradually assumed increasingly important command responsibilities. By 1426, when Lê Lợi advanced northward and began the siege of Đông Quan, Lê Lý was assigned to one of the key fronts: the attack on Xương Giang Citadel.

Xương Giang occupied a strategically important position on the route leading from the northern frontier toward Đông Quan. Controlling the citadel therefore had direct implications for the Ming dynasty’s ability to send reinforcements southward to relieve Vương Thông. Lê Lợi’s decision to assign Lê Lý, together with Lê Sát and other commanders, to attack Xương Giang shows that he had become one of the generals entrusted with operations in areas of decisive importance to the course of the war.

The Xương Giang Campaign

In 1426, the Lam Sơn army advanced northward and laid siege to Đông Quan. Lê Lợi divided his forces to attack the Ming-held citadels. Lê Sát, Lê Thụ, Nguyễn Lý, Lê Lãnh, and Lý Triện were assigned to attack Xương Giang Citadel.

By early 1427, the fighting had become increasingly intense. Lê Lợi recalled Lê Lý and ordered him, together with his own troops, to guard the southern gate of Đông Quan. This was an important assignment, as Đông Quan was the Ming army’s principal command center in Đại Việt and was then under siege by the Lam Sơn forces.

In August, Lê Lợi again ordered Lê Lý to accompany Trần Hãn in attacking Xương Giang. The Ming defenders of Xương Giang put up fierce resistance. The commanders Kim Dận and Lý Nhậm organized the defense, forcing the Lam Sơn army to spend considerable time before finally capturing the citadel.

According to the sources, the insurgents had to construct earthworks and access routes and employ hooked weapons, long spears, powerful crossbows, fire arrows, and fire weapons, while launching simultaneous attacks from all four sides. In the end, Xương Giang Citadel was breached, and both Kim Dận and Lý Nhậm committed suicide.

The victory at Xương Giang was of particular importance because, at precisely that time, a Ming relief army was advancing southward. Had Xương Giang remained in Ming hands, the relief force could have used the citadel as a stronghold on its way toward Đông Quan. By capturing it before the reinforcements arrived, the insurgents completely changed the conditions under which the Ming army would have to fight.

Chi Lăng–Xương Giang and the Decisive Victory

In the ninth lunar month of 1427, Liễu Thăng led a large Ming relief army into Đại Việt. The Lam Sơn forces intercepted the army at Chi Lăng and killed Liễu Thăng. However, Liễu Thăng’s defeat did not mean that the entire Ming relief force had been destroyed. A substantial force commanded by Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc continued to advance southward.

Under these circumstances, Lê Lợi ordered Lê Lý and Lê Văn An to lead 30,000 troops to reinforce Lê Sát. This was one of the largest military assignments entrusted to Lê Lý during the entire uprising.

The Lam Sơn army advanced to Mã Yên Mountain and continued attacking the Ming forces, killing the general Lương Minh. Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc then led the remnants of their army toward Xương Giang. Upon arriving, however, the Ming discovered that the citadel had already been captured by the Lam Sơn forces. With no fortified position in which to defend themselves, the Ming troops were forced to encamp in the open countryside.

Lê Lý and the other Lam Sơn commanders surrounded them from all four sides and coordinated their attacks. The army commanded by Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc was ultimately routed. Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc were captured alive, together with a large number of Ming soldiers.

This victory followed directly from the victory at Chi Lăng and the earlier capture of Xương Giang. Three combined factors brought about the complete failure of the large Ming relief army: Liễu Thăng was defeated at Chi Lăng; Xương Giang had been seized by the Lam Sơn forces before the reinforcements arrived; and the remaining forces under Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc were destroyed at Xương Giang.

After this defeat, Mộc Thạnh was forced to withdraw, while Vương Thông at Đông Quan could no longer expect reinforcements. The Ming army was compelled to accept peace negotiations and withdraw from the country. For Lê Lý, the victory at Xương Giang represented the high point of his military career, bringing to a close nearly ten years of fighting alongside Lê Lợi from Lam Sơn to northern Đại Việt.

Founding Meritorious Official

After the war ended, the Early Lê dynasty was established. In the first year of the Thuận Thiên era (1428), Lê Lý was appointed Nhập nội tư mã, took part in court affairs, and was recognized as a Suy trung Tán trị Hiệp mưu công thần.

This marked an important transition in his life. Whereas during the war Lê Lý’s position had been established primarily through military achievements, after 1428 he became a member of the new governmental apparatus.

In 1429, Lê Thái Tổ ordered plaques honoring meritorious officials to be engraved. Lê Lý was granted the title Hương Thượng hầu. Existing compiled sources provide two different accounts of his rank on the list of meritorious officials: the section citing the Đại Việt thông sử places him sixth, while an additional biographical section states that he, together with Lê Văn Linh and Bùi Quốc Hưng, ranked third. This detail requires direct comparison with the original historical texts before being included in an official printed edition.

Lê Lý continued to be entrusted with important duties at court. In the first lunar month of 1429, he and six other high-ranking officials were ordered to carry the golden investiture books for the appointment of the Quốc vương and the Crown Prince. In 1430, he was appointed Nhập nội kiểm hiệu Tư không.

These offices and assignments show that Lê Lý’s position during the early years of the Lê dynasty was not based solely on his military achievements. He had become one of the meritorious officials whom the king employed in organizing and operating the new government.

Political Changes under Lê Thái Tông

In 1433, Lê Thái Tổ died, and Lê Thái Tông succeeded to the throne while still young. Lê Sát assumed the role of regent and became one of the most powerful figures at court.

At the beginning of the Thiệu Bình era, in 1434, Lê Lý incurred Lê Sát’s hostility and was transferred from the central government to serve as Đô tổng đốc of the Thanh Hoa administrative region. In June of the same year, he was reassigned as Đồng tổng quản of Hạ Bắc Giang.

The transfer of a founding meritorious official who had held high office at the central court to provincial assignments shows that the political positions of the dynasty’s founding officials were not always stable. After Lê Thái Tông began exercising power directly and Lê Sát was dismissed from the office of Chancellor in 1437, Lê Lý was recalled to court, appointed Nhập nội thiếu úy, and assigned to participate in military affairs involving the guards of the Western Command.

Thus, during the early years of Lê Thái Tông’s reign, Lê Lý’s career passed through a period of considerable fluctuation: from being a high-ranking official at the central court, he was transferred to provincial positions, and was later recalled when the balance of power at court changed. These developments show that, alongside his military accomplishments, his political position was also affected by shifts within the Early Lê court.

Death and Worship

According to the Đại Việt thông sử, Lê Lý died in the third year of the Thái Hòa era (1443). Following his death, in the fifteenth year of the Hồng Đức era (1484), King Lê Thánh Tông posthumously granted him the office of Thái bảo and the title Phúc quốc công.

In addition to being worshipped at Lam Kinh, Lê Lý has also had a street in Bac Ninh named after him.

Assessment

Lê Lý was one of the representative figures among the generation of meritorious officials who emerged from the Lam Sơn uprising. His life was first and foremost closely connected with the uprising from its earliest stage until its ultimate success. He joined Lê Lợi at the Lũng Nhai Oath, endured the most difficult years of the resistance, and directly participated in numerous important campaigns. The battles at Lạc Thủy, Bồ Mộng, Thi Lang, Trà Lân, Khả Lưu, and Nghệ An demonstrate Lê Lý’s development from a commander responsible for cavalry into a military leader capable of undertaking increasingly important military responsibilities. During the early stage, his primary duties were fighting and protecting the insurgent forces; later, he was entrusted with commanding troops in strategically significant areas.

The high point of Lê Lý’s military career was the Xương Giang campaign of 1427, in which he took part in both of its key stages: the capture of Xương Giang Citadel before the Ming reinforcements arrived, and the subsequent destruction of the relief army following Liễu Thăng’s defeat at Chi Lăng. In particular, the fact that he and Lê Văn An led 30,000 troops as reinforcements, fought Lương Minh, and helped surround and destroy the army commanded by Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc demonstrates that he held a significant position during the decisive phase of the war.

Following the victory, he was appointed Nhập nội tư mã, took part in court affairs, was recognized as a Suy trung Tán trị Hiệp mưu công thần, and was later granted the title Hương Thượng hầu. He continued to hold offices including Nhập nội kiểm hiệu Tư không and Nhập nội thiếu úy, while also participating in important affairs of the court. Those who had directly helped establish the new order on the battlefield became a core component of the new government. In Lê Lý’s case, military merit formed the basis of his status, but the fact that he continued to be entrusted with major responsibilities at court also shows that he participated in the process of building and consolidating the state apparatus.

During the reign of Lê Thái Tông, when Lê Sát served as regent, Lê Lý incurred his hostility and was successively transferred to Thanh Hoa and then Bắc Giang. After Lê Sát was removed from office, Lê Lý was recalled and continued to participate in military affairs. These changes demonstrate that a general’s military achievements did not necessarily guarantee lasting political stability.

Lê Lý’s life may be understood through three successive layers of contribution. First, he was among those who joined and helped sustain the Lam Sơn uprising during its difficult early years. Second, he was one of the military commanders who participated in the decisive campaigns, particularly at Xương Giang, contributing to the defeat of the Ming relief army and helping bring the war to victory. Third, after the war, he became a meritorious official who participated in court affairs and contributed to the establishment of the Early Lê government. It is the continuity among these three aspects that defines Lê Lý’s place in history. His image is therefore associated with both major stages of the Early Lê period: the struggle to restore national autonomy and the establishment of a new monarchical government after the war.

Lê Lý 参加驻守 Lam Sơn、攻打 Trà Lân、进攻 Khả Lưu 关以及围攻 Nghệ An。

Xương Giang

Chi Lăng-Xương Giang

Lê Thái Tông
