Bước sang năm 1424, chiến sự chuyển mạnh vào Nghệ An – địa bàn chiến lược quan trọng.
Năm 1429 (Thuận Thiên thứ 2), Lê Thái Tổ giao cho Lê Sát cùng các đại thần mang kim sách lập con trưởng Lê Tư Tề làm Quốc vương giúp coi việc nước, đồng thời lập Lê Nguyên Long làm Hoàng thái tử.
Tháng 8 nhuận năm 1433, Lê Thái Tổ băng hà, Hoàng thái tử Lê Nguyên Long lên ngôi, tức vua Lê Thái Tông.

Participation in the Lam Son Uprising
Existing historical records do not clearly note Le Sat’s year of birth, nor do they describe his early life in detail. His career is recorded only from the time he joined the Lam Son uprising. He was one of the most prominent generals, closely associated with the Lam Son cause and the struggle to regain national independence in the early fifteenth century.
In 1407, after the Ho dynasty failed in resisting foreign invasion, Ming forces under the command of Zhang Fu and Mu Sheng advanced into Dai Ngu and imposed direct domination over the country. Society fell into deep misery, while resistance simmered throughout the land. In the spring of the Mau Tuat year (1418), Le Loi raised the banner of uprising at Lam Son, proclaimed himself Binh Dinh Vuong, and officially launched the war of resistance against the Ming. Le Sat was among the early participants, following Le Loi from the very first days of hardship, sharing danger and trials alike.
As the Lam Son forces grew, they gradually shifted from defense to offense. In the tenth lunar month of 1420, at Thi Lang, the insurgent army defeated a large Ming force commanded by Li Bin and Fang Zheng, a significant victory that greatly weakened Ming main forces in the region. Later that year, Le Loi stationed his troops at Ba Lam and used feigned maneuvers to lure the Ming out of their defensive positions. When the Ming generals Xie Fang and Hoanh Thanh refused to engage, Le Loi ordered constant harassment, wearing the enemy down. In this campaign, Le Sat, together with Le Hao, was tasked with dividing forces to strike enemy strongpoints, destroying many Ming units and capturing substantial spoils, thereby shifting the balance of power. The prestige of the Lam Son forces spread widely, encouraging popular support and participation.
In 1424, the war shifted decisively to Nghe An, a strategic area. After capturing Tra Lan chau and seizing the Nghe An prefect, the insurgents prepared to besiege the citadel when a Ming relief army arrived. The decisive battle at Kha Luu pass became one of Lam Son’s most notable victories. Le Loi employed deception to lure the enemy into difficult terrain before launching a counterattack with ambush forces. Le Sat, along with other generals, played a leading role at the front lines, inflicting heavy losses on the Ming, with many enemy commanders killed or captured. The insurgents then pursued relentlessly, forcing the Ming to retreat into Nghe An citadel. From this point, Lam Son’s reputation resounded across the region, marking a crucial turning point in the resistance.
In 1425, as Ming forces concentrated on relieving Nghe An, Le Loi perceived the weakening of Tay Do citadel and launched a surprise attack. He dispatched an elite force led by Le Le, Le Sat, Le Nhan Chu, Le Trien, and Le Bi. The assault was highly effective, killing and capturing many enemy troops and seriously damaging Ming morale. This victory expanded liberated territory and inspired the population of Thanh Hoa, laying the groundwork for the eventual liberation of key enemy strongholds.
Through these major campaigns, Le Sat emerged not only as an early follower of the uprising but also as a core commander who contributed decisively to its turning-point victories.
Military Achievements in the Lam Son Uprising
In the eighth lunar month of 1426, Le Loi decided to expand the battlefield northward, dividing his army into three wings. One wing, commanded by Dinh Le, Nguyen Xi, Ly Trien, and Do Bi, won a major victory over the 100,000-strong Ming army led by Wang Tong at Tot Dong–Chuc Dong, rapidly undermining Ming control in the Red River Delta. Following this victory, Le Loi led the main force from Lung Giang to Tay Phu Liet and then Dong Phu Liet, tightly besieging Wang Tong in Dong Quan. Although Wang Tong initially sought negotiations, he later changed course and continued to hold out.
Le Loi therefore ordered attacks on surrounding fortresses to isolate Dong Quan completely. Among these operations, Le Sat and other generals were assigned to attack Xuong Giang citadel, a key position on the Ming supply line.
In 1427, as the siege tightened, Ming forces in Nghe An and Dieu Dieu surrendered or fled. During fierce fighting, two principal Lam Son generals, Dinh Le and Ly Trien, were killed in a surprise attack by Wang Tong. Le Sat was transferred to replace them, taking direct command of the southern siege front of Dong Quan.
In the sixth lunar month of 1427, Le Sat was promoted to Tu Ma and, together with Grand Preceptor Tran Nguyen Han, commanded the campaign against Xuong Giang. The insurgents employed combined tactics, including tunneling, four-sided assaults, fire weapons, and heavy arms. By the ninth lunar month of 1427, Xuong Giang fell, and the Ming generals inside committed suicide. This victory was strategically decisive, completely severing Ming reinforcements from the north.
Trapped in Dong Quan, Wang Tong appealed to the Ming court. Late in 1427, the Ming dispatched two large relief armies led by Liu Sheng and Mu Sheng. Le Loi assigned Le Sat and other generals to block Liu Sheng’s army at Chi Lang pass, one of the most formidable chokepoints on the route from the border to Dong Quan.
At Chi Lang, Le Sat deployed feigned maneuvers to lure the Ming into an ambush. Overconfident, Liu Sheng was attacked at Ma Yen mountain and killed. Le Sat then led pursuit operations that destroyed successive Ming units, forcing the remaining troops into a desperate retreat toward Xuong Giang, where they were surrounded and largely annihilated; commanders such as Cui Ju and Huang Fu were captured alive. At the same time, Mu Sheng’s army from Yunnan was also defeated. With all relief forces destroyed, Wang Tong had no choice but to negotiate and withdraw, ending the Lam Son uprising in victory.
Rewards and Honors
In 1428, with the country pacified, Le Loi ascended the throne as Emperor Le Thai To, adopted the reign title Thuan Thien, established the capital at Dong Kinh, and restored Dai Viet. Le Sat was granted the title Suy Trung Tan Tri Hiep Trung Muu Quoc Cong Than and appointed Nhap Noi Kiem Hieu Tu Khau Binh Chuong Quan Quoc Trong Su (equivalent to prime minister).
On the third day of the fifth lunar month in 1429, Le Thai To issued merit plaques to ninety-three officials; Le Sat was ennobled as Huyen Thuong Hau, ranked first among the meritorious officials.
Under Le Thai To
In 1429 (Thuan Thien 2), Le Thai To entrusted Le Sat and other senior officials with the golden book to invest his eldest son Le Tu Te as Quoc Vuong to assist in governing, while appointing Le Nguyen Long as Crown Prince. This demonstrated the king’s complete trust in Le Sat as a principal guardian of the young successor.
In 1433, Le Thai To further honored Le Sat as Duong Vu Tinh Nan Cong Than and promoted him to Dai Tu Do, placing him at the apex of the court.
Under Le Thai Tong
In the intercalary eighth month of 1433, Le Thai To passed away, and Crown Prince Le Nguyen Long ascended the throne as Emperor Le Thai Tong. Le Sat became a regent and in 1434 was elevated to chief minister, controlling state affairs.
During his regency, however, Le Sat increasingly displayed authoritarian tendencies. He became suspicious of other meritorious officials, particularly Le Nhan Chu, whom he falsely accused and had executed. Those seen as potential rivals or critics were dismissed, exiled, or harshly punished. Strict enforcement of penal law bred fear and resentment among officials.
Numerous cases from 1434–1435 reveal that Le Sat’s power overshadowed even the young emperor. Nevertheless, as a founding meritorious official, he continued to receive honors, including posthumous recognition for his ancestors, major construction projects, and responsibility for diplomatic and military affairs.
As Le Thai Tong matured and assumed direct rule, tensions intensified. The emperor resisted Le Sat’s deep interference in court life and sought to curb his power, notably by planning to recall Trinh Kha to the capital to command the army.
In 1437, fearing the erosion of his authority, Le Sat reacted anxiously. Courtiers submitted memorials accusing him of usurping power, abusing executions, and oppressing officials. Emperor Le Thai Tong ordered his arrest and stripped him of rank and titles. Further revelations that Le Sat secretly maintained armed retainers and plotted against Le Ngan led to a severe verdict. Despite appeals citing his great service to the dynasty, the emperor allowed him to commit suicide at home rather than face public execution.
In the seventh lunar month of 1437, Le Sat took his own life. His property was confiscated, and his relatives and associates were punished or demoted. In 1453, Emperor Le Nhan Tong granted an amnesty and allocated land to Le Sat’s descendants. In 1484, under Emperor Le Thanh Tong, Le Sat was posthumously honored with the rank Thai Bao and ennobled as Canh Quoc Cong, officially restoring recognition of a founding meritorious official whose career ended tragically amid power struggles.

Le Sat (? – 1437)

(Le Sat,?—1437)
