Góp công lớn trong chiến dịch giải phóng Nghệ An

Background
Phạm Vấn (? – 1436) was a founding meritorious official of the Early Lê dynasty and one of the close generals who made many important contributions to the Lam Sơn uprising led by Lê Lợi. During nearly ten years of resistance against the invading Ming army, he was present in major campaigns, achieved many brilliant military merits, and contributed to the decisive victory of the Lam Sơn insurgent army, paving the way for the establishment of the Early Lê dynasty.
According to historical sources, Phạm Vấn was from Nguyễn Xá hamlet, Lương Giang district, in the former Thanh Hóa region, now in Thọ Xuân district, Thanh Hóa province. This was also the land where the Lam Sơn uprising originated and the homeland of many meritorious officials and famous generals who helped restore Đại Việt’s independence in the early fifteenth century.
Official histories do not clearly record Phạm Vấn’s year of birth, parents, or youth. However, the fact that he joined the Lam Sơn insurgent army early and quickly became one of its key generals shows that he was a man of military talent, courage, and was deeply trusted by Lê Lợi. Through many years of sharing life-and-death dangers with the insurgent army, Phạm Vấn not only achieved many merits on the battlefield but was also regarded as one of the pillars of the Lam Sơn forces during the decisive stage of the resistance war against the Ming army.
After the country regained independence and the Early Lê dynasty was established, Phạm Vấn’s contributions were recognized by the court by ranking him among the founding meritorious officials. His name has therefore always been associated with the first generation of generals who helped lay the foundations for one of the most prosperous dynasties in Vietnamese feudal history.
Historical Context
Phạm Vấn lived and served in the early fifteenth century, a turbulent period of national history, when Đại Việt was under Ming occupation and carried out a long struggle to regain independence. In 1407, after defeating the Hồ dynasty, the Ming dynasty imposed its rule over Đại Việt, turning the country into a commandery and district of China. The occupation authorities implemented many harsh policies, such as exploiting resources, plundering wealth, forcing the people into heavy corvée labor, and carrying out cultural and educational assimilation in order to erase national identity. Many books, stone steles, and cultural heritages were confiscated or destroyed; many craftsmen, intellectuals, and talented people were taken to China. These policies made the people’s lives extremely miserable and stirred up the spirit of struggle for independence throughout the country.
In that context, many uprisings against the Ming army broke out but were defeated one after another. In the spring of 1418, Lê Lợi raised the banner of uprising in the Lam Sơn region of Thanh Hóa, beginning a resistance war that lasted nearly ten years against Ming domination. From a still-weak force, the Lam Sơn insurgent army gradually grew stronger thanks to the unity of the people and the strategic talent of outstanding leaders and generals such as Nguyễn Trãi, Lê Sát, Lê Ngân, Lê Văn An, Lê Khôi, and Phạm Vấn. After many important victories, especially the Chi Lăng-Xương Giang campaign in 1427, the Ming army was forced to withdraw from Đại Việt, ending more than twenty years of occupation.
Career
Joining the Lam Sơn Uprising from the Beginning
Phạm Vấn was one of the generals who took part in the Lam Sơn uprising from its earliest days, when Lê Lợi’s forces were still very weak and faced countless difficulties. Throughout nearly ten years of resistance against the Ming army (1418-1427), he always stood shoulder to shoulder with Lê Lợi, making important contributions to the building of the forces and gradually leading the insurgent army to final victory.
In Đại Việt thông sử, the historian Lê Quý Đôn assessed Phạm Vấn in brief but weighty words: “He followed King Thái Tổ in raising the army, was always by his side from beginning to end, and assisted him with all his strength.” This remark clearly reflects his role not only as a military general who charged into battle, but also as a trusted confidant absolutely loyal to the leader of the uprising.
Immediately after the uprising broke out at Lam Sơn in the spring of 1418, the insurgent army fell into an extremely dangerous situation. On the 17th day of the first lunar month of the Mậu Tuất year, 1418, because of the betrayal of an informer named Ái, the Ming army suddenly attacked the Lam Sơn base. Many of Lê Lợi’s relatives were captured, the insurgent forces suffered heavy losses, and the morale of the soldiers wavered. In that perilous situation, Phạm Vấn was still one of the few generals who resolutely stayed with Lê Lợi and withdrew into Chí Linh Mountain to preserve the forces. The insurgents endured food shortages for three months, living deep in the forest amid countless hardships, but he remained wholeheartedly beside his lord, helping maintain the fighting spirit of the entire army until the Ming army withdrew.
Achieving Many Military Merits during the Fighting in Thanh Hóa
In the early years of the uprising, Phạm Vấn continuously took part in major battles to protect the Lam Sơn base and wear down the Ming forces.
In 1420, when the local official Cầm Lạn colluded with the Ming army and brought the generals Lý Bân and Phương Chính to attack the insurgents at Mường Thôi, Phạm Vấn, together with the generals Nguyễn Lý and Lý Triện, was assigned to block the enemy. Coordinating with the ambush force personally commanded by Lê Lợi at Bồ Mộng, he helped defeat the Ming army, killing about three thousand enemy troops and safely protecting the insurgent base.
Two years later, in 1422, the Ming army again mobilized additional troops from Ai Lao to coordinate an attack on Lam Sơn. In the battle at Sách Khôi, Phạm Vấn, together with Lê Lĩnh and Lý Triện, commanded suicide troops who charged straight into the enemy formation. The insurgent army killed the general Phùng Quý, destroyed more than one thousand enemy soldiers, captured many war horses, and forced the Ming generals Mã Kỳ and Trần Trí to flee back to Đông Quan. This victory not only defeated the enemy’s plan to surround and destroy the insurgent army but also strengthened the soldiers’ confidence in the possibility of victory.
In early 1423, when the insurgent army once again withdrew to Chí Linh Mountain and fell into a situation of being surrounded by the Ming army, with food supplies cut off for two months, Phạm Vấn continued to remain beside Lê Lợi, encouraging the soldiers to maintain their will to fight and not falter before hardship. In recognition of his loyalty and talent, Lê Lợi appointed him Senior General and entrusted him with the command of troops in the following campaigns.
Major Contributions to the Campaign to Liberate Nghệ An
After a period of temporary truce to consolidate forces, at the end of 1424 the Lam Sơn insurgent army launched a campaign into Nghệ An in order to create a strategic turning point for the resistance war.
On the march, Phạm Vấn and other generals directly took part in attacking Trà Lân Citadel and fought the Ming forces commanded by Sư Hựu and Phương Chính at Bồ Đằng. With his command ability and courage on the battlefield, he and the other generals repelled the enemy, creating conditions for the insurgent army to advance deeper into Nghệ An.
When the Lam Sơn army reached the Khả Lưu pass, the Ming troops from Nghệ An Citadel launched a fierce counterattack to stop the insurgents’ advance. In this battle, Phạm Vấn and Lê Sát charged forward to break the enemy formation, defeated the Ming army, killed the general Hoàng Thành, captured Admiral Chu Kiệt alive, and caused most of the enemy troops to be killed or drowned in the river. General Phương Chính had to flee into Nghệ An Citadel and hold out there.
The victory at Khả Lưu opened wide the way into Nghệ An and created a fundamental shift for the Lam Sơn uprising. Most of the prefectures and districts in Nghệ An successively submitted to the insurgent army, expanding the liberated zone and creating a firm rear base for later campaigns. Thanks to his outstanding merits, Phạm Vấn was appointed Thiếu úy.
Contributing Decisively to the Victory at Xương Giang
In 1427, the resistance war entered its decisive stage. After destroying Liu Sheng’s relief army at Chi Lăng, the Lam Sơn insurgent army continued to besiege the Ming forces at Xương Giang.
Following Lê Lợi’s order, Phạm Vấn and Lê Khôi led troops to reinforce Lê Sát’s force, which was besieging the Ming generals Cui Ju and Huang Fu. In the general assault on Xương Giang, the Lam Sơn forces coordinated closely, destroyed about fifty thousand Ming troops, and captured Cui Ju, Huang Fu, and many other high-ranking generals alive.
The victory at Xương Giang completely crushed the Ming relief forces, forcing Wang Tong to request peace negotiations and withdraw his troops, ending more than twenty years of Ming occupation over Đại Việt. This was one of the most brilliant military achievements of the Lam Sơn uprising, in which Phạm Vấn was one of the generals who played an important role.
Founding Meritorious Official and Pillar of the Early Lê Court
After the country regained independence, in 1428 Lê Lợi ascended the throne as emperor, beginning the Early Lê dynasty. For his great services in the resistance war, Phạm Vấn was granted the office of Vinh lộc đại phu, Great General of the Left Kim Ngô Guard, the title Thượng Trí tự, and was also given the honorific title of Meritorious Official for Loyal Assistance, Governance Support, Strategic Counsel, and Protection of the State. Not long afterward, he was further promoted to the office of Nhập nội kiểm hiệu Bình chương quân quốc trọng sự, becoming one of the leading high officials of the court.
In 1429, when Lê Thái Tổ reviewed merits and granted inscribed tablets to ninety-three founding meritorious officials, Phạm Vấn was ranked in the highest class of meritorious officials, together with Lê Sát and Phạm Văn Xảo, and was granted the title Marquis of Huyện Thượng. This was the court’s special recognition of his outstanding contributions to the cause of national independence.
In the same year, he was one of seven high officials entrusted with carrying the golden investiture documents to confer the title of National King on Lê Tư Tề and Crown Prince on Lê Nguyên Long, showing his special position within the court.
In 1431, Phạm Vấn was promoted to Nhập nội kiểm hiệu Đô đốc Quận hầu. In 1433, after Lê Thái Tổ passed away, he and Lê Sát received the late king’s testamentary edict to serve as regents, assisting the young King Lê Thái Tông in governing the country. Being entrusted with the responsibility of regency is clear evidence of the political prestige, administrative ability, and absolute trust that the court placed in him.
Death and Worship
In the third year of Thiệu Bình, 1436, Phạm Vấn passed away while still holding important responsibilities in the court. The court posthumously granted him the office of Grand Mentor and bestowed on him the posthumous title Tuyên Vũ, in recognition of his services to the dynasty.
In 1484, under the reign of Lê Thánh Tông, he was further posthumously granted the title of Grand Mentor and Duke of Trấn, affirming his position among the representative founding meritorious officials with the greatest merits of the Early Lê dynasty.
Assessment and Evaluation
Phạm Vấn was one of the representative founding meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty, fully attached to the Lam Sơn uprising from its earliest difficult days until the country regained independence. He was not only an experienced battlefield general but also a loyal companion who always stood beside Lê Lợi during the most difficult moments of the uprising. His steadfastness, devotion, and unyielding will helped strengthen the confidence of the insurgent army, creating the strength that brought the Lam Sơn uprising to victory.
In military terms, Phạm Vấn was a general with outstanding command ability and strategic talent. He participated in most of the important campaigns of the resistance war against the Ming army, from holding the Lam Sơn base and liberating Nghệ An to strategic decisive battles such as Khả Lưu and Xương Giang. His military achievements not only helped change the course of the war but also laid the foundation for the complete collapse of the Ming occupation regime in Đại Việt. Although historical records do not praise him with as many ornate words as some other famous generals of the same period, the fact that he was repeatedly entrusted with command in key battles shows Lê Lợi’s absolute confidence in his military talent.
After the country was restored, Phạm Vấn continued to show the role of a pillar high official in the building of the Early Lê dynasty. He was ranked among the highest class of meritorious officials, held many important offices, and participated in the administration of the court, especially serving as regent after Lê Thái Tổ passed away. This shows that he was not only an outstanding military general but also a prestigious statesman who helped maintain court stability during a period of power transition.
From a historical perspective, Phạm Vấn is a representative model of the Lam Sơn meritorious officials—people who placed the interests of the country first and devoted their whole lives to the cause of national liberation and state-building. Although his name is not as widely known as Nguyễn Trãi, Lê Sát, or Lê Khôi, his contributions to the victory of the Lam Sơn uprising and the formation of the Early Lê dynasty are undeniable. The life and career of Phạm Vấn are evidence of the loyalty to the ruler, love for the country, righteousness, and self-sacrifice of a meritorious official who devoted his entire life to the independence, unity, and prosperity of Đại Việt.

Origines
