Năm 1425, khi quân Lam Sơn từng bước mở rộng hoạt động ở Nghệ An, Lê Lợi sai Trần Nguyên Hãn tiến đánh Tân Bình, Thuận Hóa.

Background
Lê Văn An (1384–1437) was one of the military commanders who played an important role in the Lam Sơn uprising and in the establishment of the Early Lê dynasty. He was a native of Mục Sơn settlement in the Lam Sơn region of Thanh Hóa. From the early years, Lê Văn An joined the core forces of the uprising and became one of the founding meritorious officials under Lê Lợi.
According to the Đại Việt thông sử, when Lê Lợi and eighteen of his close retainers held a ceremony of sworn brotherhood and pledged together to undertake the great cause, Lê Văn An’s name appeared third on the list. When the Lam Sơn uprising officially broke out in 1418, Lê Văn An was appointed by Lê Lợi as Deputy Commander of a cavalry guard in the Thiết Đột army. This was a mobile combat force that played an important role in both battles and military marches of the insurgent army.
Historical Context
Lê Văn An came of age during a particularly turbulent period in the history of Đại Việt. After the Ming dynasty invaded and imposed its rule over the country, the political, social, and economic life of Đại Việt fell into a state of profound instability.
Against this background, in 1418, Lê Lợi raised the banner of revolt at Lam Sơn. The uprising initially faced immense difficulties: its forces were small, its area of operation was limited, and the Ming army enjoyed superiority in both manpower and equipment, while the insurgents had to depend on mountainous terrain, the protection and support of the people, and their own mobility in order to survive. The early years of the uprising were therefore primarily a process of building up forces, preserving the army, gradually expanding the area of operations, and seeking opportunities to launch counteroffensives.
During this process, those who had followed Lê Lợi from the beginning, including Lê Văn An, played a particularly important role. They served both as direct combat forces and as commanders who gradually accumulated experience through a succession of battles. From the Lam Sơn base, the insurgent army gradually expanded its activities southward into Nghệ An, and from there extended its power into Thanh Hóa, Tân Bình, and Thuận Hóa before advancing toward Đông Quan. The final stage of the uprising marked a fundamental shift in the balance of forces: the Lam Sơn army moved from a defensive and dispersed position to active offensives, encirclement, and the destruction of the Ming army’s main forces.
Lê Văn An participated in most of these important transitions, from the fighting during the Lam Sơn uprising to the subsequent process of building and defending the Early Lê government after the war ended.
Career
From the First Battles to the Nghệ An Front
From the early years of the uprising, Lê Văn An repeatedly took part in direct combat. One of his important achievements was the Battle of Khả Lưu in the year Giáp Thìn (1424). When the Lam Sơn army advanced into Nghệ An and confronted the Ming forces, Lê Văn An charged forward, directly broke into the enemy formation, and drove the opposing troops back. This action demonstrated his combat ability and his willingness to take the lead on the battlefield, while also helping explain why Lê Lợi increasingly entrusted him with important military missions.
In 1425, as the Lam Sơn forces gradually expanded their operations in Nghệ An, Lê Lợi ordered Trần Nguyên Hãn to attack Tân Bình and Thuận Hóa. Lê Văn An, together with Lê Ngân and Lê Bôi, was assigned to command naval forces sent as reinforcements. The coordination between land and naval forces enabled the Lam Sơn army to seize the two citadels quickly. This victory contributed to expanding the territory under the insurgents’ control and created favorable conditions for the uprising to enter a new stage of development.
Afterward, when Lê Lợi advanced toward Tây Đô, Lê Văn An was left behind in Nghệ An to continue the siege of the citadel commanded by Thái Phúc. This was a different type of assignment from the direct battles in which he had previously participated. Whereas at Khả Lưu he had demonstrated the role of a vanguard commander, at Nghệ An he was responsible for maintaining the siege and compelling the enemy to surrender. When Thái Phúc capitulated and handed the citadel over to the Lam Sơn army, Lê Văn An led his troops toward Đông Đô to continue participating in the decisive campaigns of the uprising.
Thus, Lê Văn An not only fought directly on the battlefield but was also entrusted with tasks requiring the ability to organize and coordinate forces and to maintain a military position over an extended period.
The Xương Giang Campaign and Decisive Military Achievements
By the end of 1427, the war had entered its decisive stage. After a number of Ming commanders, including Liễu Thăng, Lương Minh, and Lý Khánh, had been defeated, the forces under Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc became one of the remaining major Ming armies attempting to advance toward Xương Giang.
Under these circumstances, Lê Lợi ordered Lê Văn An and Lê Lý to lead 30,000 troops to reinforce Lê Sát, creating a coordinated encirclement of the Ming forces. Lê Văn An repeatedly organized attacks, exerting continuous pressure and gradually restricting the enemy’s room for maneuver. The forces of Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc were eventually driven into an encircled position at Xương Giang.
In November 1427, the Lam Sơn army launched a general assault. Lê Văn An and the other commanders joined forces in attacking the Ming army, capturing Thôi Tụ and Hoàng Phúc alive together with approximately 30,000 troops. This victory was of particular importance to the entire uprising. The destruction and capture of a major Ming field army at Xương Giang effectively eliminated the Ming dynasty’s ability to continue the war in Đại Việt. From this point, the Lam Sơn resistance moved toward its final victory, opening a new period of independence and leading to the establishment of the Early Lê dynasty.
Throughout the uprising, Lê Văn An was among the commanders who participated from its earliest days through to its final battles. His military career was therefore closely associated with the transformation of the Lam Sơn forces: from a still-weak insurgent force based at Lam Sơn into an army capable of defeating large Ming field armies.
Founding Meritorious Official
After the victory of the uprising, Lê Văn An’s role changed from that of a battlefield commander to that of a meritorious official of the newly established court. In the first year of the Thuận Thiên era (1428), when Lê Lợi ascended the throne, Lê Văn An was appointed Nhập nội Tư mã, permitted to participate in court affairs, and granted the designation Suy trung Bảo chính công thần. His inclusion among the senior officials of the Early Lê court from its first years shows that his contributions to the war of liberation were recognized by the court to a considerable degree.
In 1429, when Lê Thái Tổ ordered plaques to be engraved recording the merits of the founding officials, Lê Văn An was granted the title Đình hầu. This represented another step in the formal establishment of his status among the founding meritorious officials.
By 1432, he was further granted the title Tán trị Hiệp mưu công thần and appointed Nhập nội kiểm hiệu Đại tư không and Bình chương quân quốc trọng sự. These titles and offices show that Lê Văn An was no longer regarded merely as a military commander who had distinguished himself on the battlefield, but had become a figure involved in both the political and military affairs of the court.
Military Operations in Lạng Sơn and Political Developments in the Early Reign of Lê Thái Tông
In the second lunar month of the first year of the Thiệu Bình era (1434), during the reign of Lê Thái Tông, Lê Văn An was appointed Tư mã Bắc đạo and placed in charge of military affairs in the northern region, particularly in Lạng Sơn.
The situation in Lạng Sơn at that time was relatively complicated. Hoàng Nguyên Ý had served as a local hereditary leader in Lạng Sơn during the period of Ming occupation. Together with Hoàng Văn Ngạc, Nguyễn Thế Ninh, and Nguyễn Công Đình, he later submitted to the Lam Sơn forces. After the victory, Lê Thái Tổ appointed these men to offices including quản lĩnh and thượng tướng quân, while allowing them to continue governing their former territories. This policy was intended to make use of local leaders who had submitted to the new regime in order to stabilize the frontier.
However, after the war, relations between local leaders and court officials sent to govern the region were not always harmonious. According to the sources, the officials Lê Đồ and Lê Lộng failed to handle local relations skillfully, causing Hoàng Nguyên Ý and the others gradually to become dissatisfied.
Another incident further heightened tensions. Quận vương Lê Tư Tề, the eldest son of Lê Thái Tổ, had a concubine who had been dismissed for misconduct. When Hoàng Nguyên Ý came to court, he met this woman, became attracted to her, and secretly brought her back to Lạng Sơn. Later, one of Hoàng Nguyên Ý’s household slaves, named Phi Báo, fled to Lê Lộng and Lê Đồ after being beaten by his master and accused Nguyên Ý of raising troops in rebellion. The matter was reported to the court, and Lê Thái Tông immediately ordered Lê Văn An to lead troops to suppress the alleged revolt.
By the time Lê Văn An arrived in Lạng Sơn, the situation had already undergone substantial changes. Hoàng Văn Ngạc had been killed by the local garrison troops, while Hoàng Nguyên Ý and Nguyễn Thế Ninh abandoned their wives and children and fled into Ming territory. Lê Văn An continued to order the arrest of relatives, slaves, and livestock belonging to those regarded as rebels, while also detaining more than one thousand garrison soldiers and bringing them back to the court.
Lê Thái Tông subsequently ordered that ordinary people be pardoned, while only the family members of those classified as rebels were to be punished by being assigned to officials. After completing the mission, Lê Văn An was further promoted to Nhập nội Đại tư mã and Đô đốc đồng tổng quản Bắc đạo.
However, during the campaign, he had ordered arrests on a relatively broad scale, causing disruption and harassment among both soldiers and civilians in the locality. He was therefore criticized by public opinion. Lê Văn An’s military achievements and status among the founding meritorious officials did not mean that all of his actions in exercising authority were approved by his contemporaries.
Character and Conduct
Alongside his military achievements and official titles, Lê Văn An was known among the military officials of the Lê court as a man of gentle and simple character. He often treated scholar-officials with proper courtesy. However, he was still criticized for his conduct during the Lạng Sơn campaign, where his handling of the situation was judged to have been excessive and to have negatively affected the local population.
Death and Worship
After completing his mission in Lạng Sơn, Lê Văn An continued to hold high office at court. In the sixth lunar month of the fourth year of the Thiệu Bình era (1437), he died. The court posthumously conferred upon him the office of Tư không and granted him the posthumous name Trung Hiến. The granting of an official title and posthumous name after his death demonstrates that Lê Văn An’s status among the meritorious officials of the Early Lê dynasty continued to be recognized by the court.
Nearly half a century later, under the reign of Lê Thánh Tông, the honors granted to Lê Văn An were further elevated. In the fifteenth year of the Hồng Đức era (1484), he was posthumously granted the office of Thái phó and the title Khác quận công. This represented an important addition to the system of honors accorded to the dynasty’s founding meritorious officials and also shows that the court of Lê Thánh Tông continued to reinforce the official memory of those who had contributed to the establishment of the Early Lê state.
Today, Ngọc Lan Temple, located within the Lam Kinh historical site, is dedicated to Princess Ngọc Lan together with seven founding meritorious officials. Lê Văn An is remembered as a member of the generation of meritorious officials who played an important role in the establishment of the Early Lê dynasty.
In Da Nang City, a street has also been named after Lê Văn An.
Assessment
Lê Văn An was one of the representative military commanders among the group of meritorious officials who followed Lê Lợi from the earliest days of the Lam Sơn uprising. From joining the oath ceremony with Lê Lợi’s close followers and serving as Deputy Commander of a cavalry guard in the Thiết Đột army, through hundreds of battles and the decisive campaigns in Nghệ An and Xương Giang, he was consistently present at important stages of the uprising.
During the early years, he served as a vanguard commander, directly charging into battle and contributing to the preservation of the insurgent forces. As the Lam Sơn army expanded its operations into Nghệ An, he was entrusted with missions involving coordination and command of military forces. By the Xương Giang campaign, he had become one of the commanders directly involved in encircling, defeating, and capturing the last major Ming field army. After the war, he continued to hold high office at court and was entrusted with military responsibilities in strategically important regions.
This process shows that Lê Văn An was not merely a capable battlefield commander, but also one of the figures whom Lê Lợi trusted in the organization and command of the army. He was appointed Nhập nội Tư mã immediately after the establishment of the Lê dynasty and was subsequently granted a succession of high titles and offices, reflecting the court’s recognition of his contributions to the restoration of independence and the construction of the new government.
However, Lê Văn An’s image in historical sources was not shaped entirely by his military achievements. Criticism concerning the Lạng Sơn campaign reveals the complex problems involved in consolidating central authority and administering frontier regions. The indiscriminate arrests and disturbances inflicted upon soldiers and civilians were criticized by contemporary opinion. This is a detail that should be retained when assessing the historical figure, as it shows that traditional historical sources recorded not only his merits but also the negative consequences of actions carried out by a founding meritorious official.
At the same time, descriptions of Lê Văn An as gentle and simple in character, and as someone who treated scholar-officials with courtesy, reveal another aspect of his personality. The coexistence of these positive assessments and criticisms helps present Lê Văn An as a concrete historical figure associated not only with military achievements and official authority, but also with personal conduct and the limitations inherent in the exercise of power.
After his death, Lê Văn An continued to receive posthumous honors from the court and to be commemorated by later generations within the system of worship dedicated to the meritorious officials of Lam Sơn.

Lorsque Lê Văn An arriva à Lạng Sơn, la situation avait déjà beaucoup évolué.

1418年 Lam Sơn 起义正式爆发后,Lê Văn An 被 Lê Lợi 任命为 Thiết đột 军骑兵卫 Thứ thủ。
1425年,当 Lam Sơn 军逐步扩大在 Nghệ An 的活动时,Lê Lợi 命 Trần Nguyên Hãn 进攻 Tân Bình、Thuận Hóa。Lê Văn An 与 Lê Ngân、Lê Bôi 奉命率领水军前往支援。
Xương Giang
顺天元年(1428),Lê Lợi 即位后,Lê Văn An 被授予 Nhập nội Tư mã,获准参与朝政,并被封为 Suy trung Bảo chính công thần。
1429年,Lê Thái Tổ 命人镌刻功臣名牌,Lê Văn An 被封为 Đình hầu。
任务完成以后,Lê Văn An 被加封为 Nhập nội Đại tư mã、Đô đốc đồng tổng quản Bắc đạo。
Thiệu Bình
