Hà Lạn Pagoda, also known as Trung Quang Pagoda, is located in Hai Phuc commune, Hai Hau district, Nam Dinh province, Vietnam. Built on elevated land covering approximately 4,000m2, the pagoda faces southeast, with a field in front and is closely bordered by Highway 56, surrounded by a dense residential area.

The architectural complex of Hà Lạn Pagoda includes structures such as the bell tower, Buddha temple, Mother Goddess shrine, ancestral house, guesthouse, tomb tower area, and ornamental garden, all protected within a well-maintained wall. Despite experiencing natural disasters and war damage, the pagoda has undergone regular renovations while preserving the traditional ethnic architectural style.

The pagoda’s frontal area features a bell tower with an eight-roof stacked candle design, flanked by two consecutive gates connected to the protective wall system. In the southeast corner of the pagoda’s courtyard, there is a large well surrounded by solid stone borders, adorned with numerous cannonball flower plants. Beyond its spiritual significance for feng shui, the well enhances the meditative atmosphere.

A notable feature within the overall historical site is the Buddha temple. This significant structure is constructed in the traditional nail-shaped architecture, consisting of a 5-bay main hall and a 5-bay three-treasure structure primarily made of ironwood. Although the components of the building are not intricately carved, the artisans showcased their talent by creating decorative leaf engravings with unique carved lines and exquisite details.

Behind the Buddha temple, through the ornamental garden, is the ancestral house where the pagoda’s patriarchs are venerated, including the revered Vũ Duy Hòa. This structure is also built in the nail-shaped style. Among the auxiliary buildings within the pagoda’s premises, the most noteworthy is the tomb tower area situated in the west garden. This is the eternal resting place of the pagoda’s patriarchs. Among the seven towers, the most prominent is the tomb tower dedicated to Vũ Duy Hòa, with a separate area covering 260m2. This reflects the admiration and respect of the local people for the leader who played a crucial role during the urgent struggle against the sea invasion.

In addition to the grandeur reflecting the traditional ethnic architectural style, the pagoda houses several significant worship items contributing to the artistic value of the historical site. This includes a sophisticatedly carved system of 19 Buddha statues on three treasures, prominently featuring the statues of Amitabha Buddha, the Mother Buddha, and the Snow Mountain Buddha. Additionally, there are stone artifacts with artistic and historical value, notably a 0.45m high and 0.35m wide stone slab with the 9th year of Khai Dinh era (1924) inscription, providing historical documentation of the participation in the Văn Thân movement against the French by the monk Trần Quang Thái, the third-generation monk in charge of the pagoda. Hà Lạn Pagoda is where this monk preached and educated the spirit of patriotism against foreign aggression for monks, Buddhist followers, and local residents.

Historically, during the resistance against the French, Hà Lạn Pagoda served as a reliable base for the revolution, hiding revolutionary officials and acting as the headquarters for the administrative resistance committee of Hưng Đạo commune. It also served as a storage facility for supplies during the resistance. Many individuals from this place bravely went into battle to save the country, including monk Thích Thanh Quảng, who heroically sacrificed and was officially recognized as a martyr by the state. Two other monks were also awarded medals and badges by the state.

Hà Lạn Pagoda is also the venue for an annual traditional wrestling festival held in the lunar New Year. Apart from participating in the festival and enjoying traditional martial arts performances, it is an opportunity for local people to return home from their businesses to gather with family, visit the pagoda, attend Buddhist ceremonies, and commemorate the pioneering efforts of their ancestors in reclaiming land. In addition to the pagoda festival, there are also ceremonies dedicated to the ancestors, Mother Goddess worship, and ancestral procession. These religious activities not only meet spiritual needs but also embody the traditional moral principle of “Remembering the Source” for the people in the coastal region.

Based on its historical and artistic values and contributions to the revolutionary cause, Hà Lạn Pagoda has been officially recognized as a Historical and Cultural Relic by the Ministry of Culture – Information of Vietnam.
