Geographical Location and Name
Den Ba Chua Then is located in Viet Huong hamlet, Huong Son commune, Lang Giang district, Bac Giang province. From the center of Bac Giang city, the temple lies about 20 km to the north; if traveling from Kep town (Lang Giang district), it is only about 6 km to the northeast.
The temple stands near the romantic banks of the Thuong River, within a spacious and sacred setting. Over time, the temple has been maintained and worshipped by several family lineages and has undergone many restorations, renovations, and expansions. From afar, one can already see the ancient complex of Den Ba Chua Then with its gracefully curved temple roofs. Along the temple corridor stand rows of large ironwood pillars, each as wide as a person’s embrace. The temple doors are made of precious wood and intricately carved with delicate ornamental motifs by skillful artisans. The architectural style of the complex strongly reflects the traditional characteristics of the Northern Vietnamese delta.
History and Worshipped Deity
In the folk beliefs of the ethnic groups of northern mountainous regions, “Then” is understood as “Thien,” meaning Heaven. It is believed that Chua Then is a sacred deity representing the heavenly realm and serving as a spiritual intermediary between humans and the divine world. Through the worship of Chua Then, people convey their prayers and wishes to heaven and earth, seeking protection, blessings, and peace. For this reason, the cult of Chua Then has long been an important component of the spiritual life of local communities.
According to folk belief, Ba Chua Then is regarded as a protective deity capable of shielding people from misfortune, illness, and calamities. Local inhabitants often visit the temple to offer incense and pray for blessings, health, good fortune, and peace in life. Tradition holds that during the Later Le dynasty the site was originally only a small shrine. Inside the shrine there was an ancient incense burner, and the care and ritual maintenance of the shrine were hereditary responsibilities of the Lieu family in the region, who served as custodians of the incense altar for many generations.
Initially, the shrine worshipped the Tu Phu Cong Dong according to the Tam Phu – Tu Phu ritual system of Vietnamese folk religion, while also venerating a deity known as Ba Chua Then. The people living around the area—mainly from the Nung and Tay ethnic groups—frequently came here to present offerings and pray for health, peace, favorable harvests, and good fortune in life. Many believed that their prayers were answered, which gradually made the shrine increasingly sacred and widely known throughout the region.
In 2016, the temple was renovated and rebuilt on a more spacious and dignified scale. In the present arrangement of worship, the central sanctuary enshrines the Tam Toa Thanh Mau together with Ba Chua Then, who is regarded as the principal deity of the temple. In addition, the outer area includes a shrine dedicated to Son Trang and another dedicated to Than Trieu, forming a relatively complete system of worship in accordance with traditional folk religious practices.
Today, Den Ba Chua Then in Bac Giang is not only a place where local people and visitors come to offer incense and prayers but also a site that clearly reflects the religious life and traditional spiritual culture of the local community. The temple symbolizes reverence for divine beings and the human belief in sacred values within everyday life.
Architectural Landscape
The present temple complex of Ba Chua Then is relatively large, consisting of about ten temple buildings arranged into two main worship areas. The overall architectural layout represents a distinctive interaction between the Tam Phu – Tu Phu worship tradition of the Vietnamese and the Then worship of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups. This combination not only reflects the diverse religious life of the inhabitants in the region but also creates a distinctive identity for the temple’s sacred space.
The first area is Den Thuy Ung, which worships the Nam Thien Tu Bat Tu together with Duc Thanh Mau Lieu Hanh and other immortal figures within the Tam Phu – Tu Phu belief system of the Vietnamese. The structure was built in the architectural style of the Nguyen dynasty, featuring a traditional temple layout, curved tiled roofs, and decorative elements that strongly reflect classical Vietnamese artistic motifs.
The second area is the temple dedicated to Chua Then, where the principal deity of the complex is worshipped together with the Chau Chua Son Lam and Son Trang—deities associated with the beliefs of the Tay and Nung communities. This temple section was constructed in the architectural style of the Le period, creating harmony between ancient aesthetics and indigenous cultural elements within the sacred complex.
In addition to the main structures, the temple grounds also include several auxiliary facilities such as a bonsai garden, ornamental fish ponds, a hall for preparing offerings, a guest reception house, and a kitchen area serving ritual activities. All of these elements are harmoniously arranged within a lush green landscape, forming an architectural complex that is both solemn and sacred while also open and aesthetically pleasing, offering visitors a tranquil atmosphere for worship and sightseeing.
Festival
Every year, the festival of Den Ba Chua Then in Huong Son commune (Lang Giang district, Bac Giang province) is held over three days, from the 9th to the 11th day of the third lunar month. This is an important occasion when local residents as well as visitors from many regions come to the sacred temple to participate in religious and traditional festival activities. During these days, the festive atmosphere becomes lively and solemn while still preserving strong elements of folk cultural identity.
During the festival, people from many places bring offerings and their sincere devotion to present incense and express gratitude to Ba Chua Then—the deity believed to have protected the villagers and helped convey human prayers to heaven and earth. Through ritual ceremonies, people pray for favorable weather, abundant harvests, family peace, prosperity, and happiness.
The ceremonial part of the festival is conducted with great solemnity and includes many traditional rites such as the palanquin procession of the deity, sacrificial rituals, and incense offerings at the main sanctuary. These rituals follow a strict ceremonial order, expressing the community’s reverence for the divine beings worshipped in the temple. In addition, the hau dong ritual—a distinctive form of religious practice within the Tam Phu – Tu Phu belief system—is also performed and attracts the attention of a large number of participants.
Besides the ritual ceremonies, the festival also features many remarkable cultural and artistic activities. Notably, there are performances of Then singing, a traditional folk performance genre closely associated with the spiritual life of the Tay and Nung people. The melodies of Then resonate within the sacred temple space, combined with spirit-possession rituals, dances, singing, and offering ceremonies, creating an atmosphere that is both mystical and rich in the cultural identity of the northern mountainous regions. After the rituals conclude, participants perform the hoa vang ceremony, symbolically sending their wishes to the divine world.
Today, the festival of Den Ba Chua Then is not only an important religious activity for the local community but also a distinctive cultural event that contributes to preserving and promoting the traditional values of the ethnic groups in the region. The festival attracts numerous visitors who come to explore, worship, and learn about the rich spiritual and cultural life of Bac Giang.
