Đền Bạch Mã (Thanh Chương, Nghệ An)

Name and Location

Situated in the southwest of Nghe An Province, Thanh Chuong District is a land rich in history, culture, and revolutionary tradition. Today, it has 457 inventoried and protected heritage sites, including 73 officially ranked sites—14 at the National level and 59 at the Provincial level. Among them, Bach Ma Temple stands out.

From ancient times, people have passed down the saying:

“First Con, second Qua, third Bach Ma, fourth Chieu Trung.”

Bach Ma Temple, located in Vo Liet Commune, Thanh Chuong District, Nghe An Province, is one of the four most sacred temples of the Nghe region. The temple sits on a site with auspicious feng shui: airy, spacious surroundings, a meandering river in front, and behind it a road linking National Highway 49 to the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The temple venerates the general Phan Da, who heroically sacrificed his life at the age of 24 during the resistance against the Ming invaders under the Le dynasty. “Bach Ma” (“White Horse”) is named after the white horse General Phan Da often rode into battle.

History and the Figure Venerated

Legend holds that Phan Da was born in the early 15th century into a poor fishing family by the Lam River, in Chi Linh Hamlet, Vo Liet Commune, Tho Du District—today Khai Tien Hamlet, Vo Liet Commune, Thanh Chuong District.

The article “Bach Ma Temple – a temple bound to legends” mentions this general:

“Bach Ma Temple venerates a human spirit—namely Phan Da. He was a general born in the early 15th century, and his grave still remains in Thanh Long Commune, Thanh Chuong District. According to old records, his family lived by fishing along the Lam River. Orphaned at a young age, he was taken in by an elderly blacksmith named Bay. Renowned for his handsome bearing and martial prowess, he was called a ‘prodigy’ by the people.” (1)

A report in Nghe An newspaper adds:

“Located in Tan Ha Hamlet, Vo Liet Commune, Bach Ma Temple was built in the Le period to honor Phan Da—a talented general who made great contributions to expelling the Ming and liberating the country in the 15th century. He was posthumously honored as ‘Do Thien Dai De Bach Ma Thuong Dang Phuc Than’ (Celestial Emperor of the White Horse, Supreme Auspicious Deity).” (2)

Under the Early Le, Phan Da was a steadfast patriot who joined Le Loi in the Lam Son uprising against the Ming. At first he gathered his own forces, then entered the insurgent army, winning many resounding victories. In one battle, he was ambushed; single-handed on horseback, he fought his way through but was gravely wounded. His “thousand-li” steed carried him out of the encirclement, yet as he neared Vo Liet he breathed his last. Tradition says that wherever his blood fell, termites instantly covered it; his body too was entombed by termites, forming a strange, responsive grave. He was only 24.

In 1428, upon ascending the throne, Le Loi acknowledged his merits, ordering a temple built with grand state rites. He conferred the title “Do Thien Dai De Bach Ma Thuong Dang Phuc Than,” expressing the court’s gratitude and veneration for a loyal minister who gave his life for righteousness. Later dynasties further elevated his divine rank as “Thuong – Thuong – Thuong dang Toi Linh Ton Than.”

Bach Ma Temple has long been known as one of the most sacred temples. In 1465, King Le Thanh Tong himself, while campaigning south, performed sacrifices here. Subsequent dynasties—from the Le to the Nguyen—esteemed the temple and repeatedly repaired and rebuilt it. (3)

Tradition holds that the Bach Ma deity repeatedly manifested to help people overcome natural disasters and epidemics, and to aid kings and generals in defeating enemies. Because of such efficacious responses, anyone passing by—official or commoner—had to stop, remove hat or headdress, and bow in reverence. For this reason, folk tradition even preserves a legend about re-orienting the temple.

In the 30th year of Canh Hung (1770), Duke Bui The Dat, while on campaign, entered the temple to offer rites. With divine aid, the king’s and the duke’s battles achieved great victories, further spreading the temple’s renown and the deity’s responsiveness, and the people have revered it ever since.

More than a famous sacred site, Bach Ma Temple is tied to many important historical events. During the Xo Viet Nghe-Tinh movement (1930–1931) and the subsequent wars against French colonialists and American imperialists, it served as a spiritual bastion for the people of Thanh Chuong, witnessing many resolute revolutionary struggles.

Throughout the dynasties, Bach Ma Temple continually received royal decrees and honorific epithets, reflecting the court’s recognition of the merits and sanctity of the Bach Ma deity.

Across the dynasties, the Temple received further decrees and many laudatory titles: 28 decrees in the Le period and 10 in the Nguyen period. In the first lunar month of the year At Hoi (1935), Bach Ma Temple added two principal deities to be venerated by the people of Vo Liet (Left Duke and Right Duke): Hoa Luong Van Dao Dai Tuong Quan Dai Vuong, Hung Tai Dung Quyet Dich Nghi Duong Vo Quang Y Trung Dang Cong Than; and Thiet Cuong Anh Qua Dai Tuong Quan Dai Vuong, Cam Ung Uy Linh Ho Quoc Hung Doan Quang Y Trung Dang Cong Than. (4)

The ancients also recounted that anyone who behaved irreverently—or inadvertently wore white clothing and a white hat when passing the temple without performing proper salutation—might encounter misfortune or even severe illness. To mitigate the temple’s “overpowering efficacy,” the district authorities once invited a master geomancer to find a method of counter-balancing the site. Nevertheless, people believe that, no matter the effort, one cannot fully escape the influence of the numinous aura that permeates this place.

Architecture and Landscape

Bach Ma Temple is an imposing architectural complex built on a grand scale, reflecting the distinctive aesthetics of traditional Vietnamese sculpture. The temple compound comprises several major structures such as the Tam Quan gate, ceremonial gate (Nghi Mon), lower hall (Ha Dien), middle hall (Trung Dien), upper hall (Thuong Dien), left and right wings (Ta Vu and Huu Vu). Each structure bears its own architectural character, forming a harmonious and solemn ensemble.

Tam Quan Gate and Ceremonial Gate:

The Tam Quan gate, located to the left of the temple, is distinguished by its two massive pillars and the embossed images of sacred animals such as tigers, elephants, horses, mythical lions (nghe), and dragons — symbolizing the divine power of the Bach Ma deity.

The Nghi Mon stands over 7 meters high, featuring a two-story structure with three main entrances. The central doorway, 3 meters wide, is flanked by embossed figures of a civil and a military mandarin, radiating solemnity and reverence. Two smaller side doors connect to the main gate via solid walls, topped with a tiled roof of traditional mui hai (shoe-shaped) tiles, achieving both balance and elegance in architectural proportion.

Lower Hall:

The Ha Dien has a four-pillar structure, consisting of one main chamber and two side wings, built in the unique chong diem (eight-roofed) architectural style. Four square pillars support the entire building, while the soft-curved tiled roof is adorned with finely upturned eaves. Inside, the wooden framework is lacquered in bright red, accentuated by vivid white-painted motifs of dragons swirling through clouds — creating a striking artistic contrast.

Middle and Upper Halls:

Both halls comprise three compartments and four rafter bays, with roofs covered by mui hai tiles. The interior wooden structures are exquisitely carved with symbolic motifs — dragons, phoenixes, clouds, and waves — representing the harmony between nature and spirituality.

The most remarkable features are the eave brackets of the Trung Dien and Thuong Dien, which display masterful woodcarving craftsmanship. Each wooden element is an artwork itself, depicting traditional themes such as bagua symbols, dragons and phoenixes holding scrolls, carps transforming into dragons, turtles bearing lotus flowers, and long ma (dragon-horses). These motifs embody the refined skill of ancient Vietnamese artisans.

At both outer gables of the Ha Dien and Thuong Dien, the sculptural details are carved with precision, portraying lively patterns and sacred beasts. Notably, the rear and side sections of the temple remain simple and unadorned, preserving a rustic balance that complements the grandeur and elegance of the overall structure.

With its historical and artistic significance, Bach Ma Temple stands not only as a sacred spiritual site but also as a cultural heritage symbolizing the pinnacle of ancient Vietnamese architecture and sculpture.

Artifacts

The temple preserves numerous valuable antiquities of historical, cultural, and artistic importance, including bronze bells, statues, long ngai (royal thrones), dragon palanquins, bat bửu (Eight Precious Objects), ceremonial urns, golden and silver altars, and incense burners.

During the feudal dynasties, Bach Ma Temple was classified among the “National Ritual Temples” (Dien le Quoc te) and received over 100 imperial decrees of investiture.

Festival

Bach Ma Temple Festival – A Sacred and Enduring Cultural Heritage

The Bach Ma Temple Festival is a long-standing traditional celebration, closely tied to the spiritual and historical life of the people of Thanh Chuong. Throughout history, the festival’s format and scale have evolved, yet its sacred rituals and strong local identity have been preserved.

During the feudal era, the festival was held annually with two principal ceremonies:

  • The Spring Alliance Ceremony (Le Te Hiep), held at the beginning of the year to honor the Bach Ma deity and the local tutelary gods.

  • The Main Offering Ceremony (Le Te Dien), held on the 13th day of the sixth lunar month, to commemorate General Phan Da and the soldiers who fought and fell in battle.

After the August Revolution (1945), due to political and wartime upheavals, these activities were suspended. However, since the temple’s recognition as a National Heritage Site in 1994, local authorities and residents have collaborated to restore and hold the festival annually on the 9th–10th days of the second lunar month.

Since 2001, with the support of the Department of Culture and Sports and other agencies, Thanh Chuong District has expanded the festival’s scale, attracting large crowds of pilgrims and visitors.

The festival consists of two main parts: Ritual Ceremonies (Le) and Festivities (Hoi).

  • Ritual Ceremonies (Le): Conducted with solemnity and reverence, including the Khai Quang (Purification Ceremony), Yet Cao (Proclamation Ceremony), Procession of the Deity (on the 9th lunar day), and Grand Offering Ceremony (on the 10th lunar day). A highlight is the formal proclamation of the recognition of the Bach Ma Temple Festival as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

  • Festivities (Hoi): Held in a lively atmosphere, featuring various cultural and sporting events such as artistic performances, poetry recitations, a “Festival Beauty Pageant,” and competitions in football, volleyball, and traditional games. Exhibitions display the revolutionary traditions of the Xo Viet movement and local achievements in renovation. Visitors also enjoy folk games such as vat cu (wrestling), dap nieu (pot-breaking), and exhibitions of more than 20 OCOP (One Commune One Product) items from local producers.

To preserve and promote the site’s value, local authorities and residents have invested billions of VND to restore, expand, and upgrade temple facilities. Before each festival season, renovations are made — paving the temple courtyard, replacing wooden walls in the Trung Dien and Thuong Dien, restoring sacred thrones and altars, installing over 200 LED lights, and constructing new walls, incense towers, and drainage systems.

Thanks to these efforts, Bach Ma Temple retains its sacred, ancient beauty while becoming more spacious and welcoming for worshippers and visitors.

The Bach Ma Temple Festival not only offers an opportunity for people to express gratitude to national heroes but also nurtures patriotism and the spirit of national liberation among younger generations. It is a meaningful event affirming local cultural identity and serving as a lasting source of spiritual strength for the community.

Classification

For its outstanding historical, cultural, scientific, and artistic value, on March 24, 1994, the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism) issued Decision No. 226/QD-BVH, officially recognizing Bach Ma Temple as a National Historical, Cultural, and Architectural Heritage Site.

Collections

  • Le Te Hiep, au début du printemps, en hommage au dieu Bach Ma et aux divinités tutélaires locales ;
