Dai Tu Communal House (Dai Dong Commune, Hung Yen Province)
Name and Location
Dai Tu Communal House is currently located in Dai Tu hamlet, Dai Dong Commune, Van Lam District, Hung Yen Province. This area lies in the northern part of Hung Yen Province, bordering the suburban region of Hanoi and enjoying convenient conditions for transportation as well as economic and cultural exchange. Within the traditional village setting, Dai Tu Communal House is usually built in a relatively central position of the village, serving as the place where religious activities, festivals, and communal gatherings of local residents take place. Therefore, the communal house is not only an ancient architectural structure but also an important spiritual and cultural center of Dai Tu village from the past to the present.
History and the Deity Worshiped
According to the sacred legends and oral traditions of the local people, Dai Tu Communal House was built on the site of the former residence of Tuy Loc Dai Vuong Luu Co when he stationed his troops in Dai Tu hamlet to suppress the warlord Luu Khue (Ly Cong Lang) in 968. He also granted land to the villagers of Dai Tu for cultivation and provided money for them to build a shrine that would later serve as a place to worship him.
Throughout the historical periods of the nation, Dai Tu Communal House was the site of many important local historical events. During the feudal period, important village meetings were held at the communal house. During the Resistance War against the French, the communal house served as a base for activities, gathering forces, forging weapons, and practicing martial arts for local guerrilla units and cadres of the Viet Minh. Therefore, in 1947, the French colonial forces swept through the area and completely burned down the communal house. In 1990, the communal house was reconstructed by the local authorities and residents on the original foundation. Today, the communal house has been renovated and made more spacious, serving as a place for cultural and religious activities for the local people.
According to sacred records and historical documents, the genealogy titled “Ngoc Pha Luc of Tuy Loc Dai Vuong, a meritorious official of the Dinh dynasty” was copied from the book Bach Than Pha Luc in 1887 (the 2nd year of the Dong Khanh reign). The original genealogy was compiled by the Grand Scholar Nguyen Binh in the first year of the Hong Phuc era (1572), and later recopied by the official Nguyen Hien in the 2nd year of the Vinh Huu era (1736), and preserved in the court compilation Bach Than Pha Luc passed down through generations.
Dai Tu Communal House worships Grand Preceptor Luu Co, a founding meritorious official who helped Dinh Bo Linh—later known as Dinh Tien Hoang—unify the Twelve Warlords. He made significant contributions to the unification of the country, assisting the royal court and stabilizing society. Luu Co was born on the 3rd day of the first lunar month in the year Canh Ty (940) in Hoa Lu area, Chau Dai Hoang (present-day Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh Province). He was a fellow villager and childhood companion of Dinh Bo Linh, Dinh Dien, Nguyen Bac, and Trinh Tu during their youthful days of playing war games with reed flags.
When Dinh Bo Linh raised the banner of uprising in Hoa Lu, Luu Co was one of the generals who fought alongside him in the campaign to suppress the Twelve Warlords and unify the realm. He directly commanded troops with the commander Dinh Bo Linh to defeat the warlord Ly Khue (also known as Ly Lang Cong) in Sieu Loai (present-day Bac Ninh). In the year Mau Thin (968), Dinh Bo Linh ascended the throne as emperor, established the capital at Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh), and named the country Dai Co Viet. After ascending the throne, Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang appointed Luu Co as Grand Preceptor of the Do Ho Phu. Luu Co was a talented military strategist and a leading court official in charge of judicial matters, known as an able administrator consistently devoted to the independence and autonomy of the nation. He was the person who assisted Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang in overseeing the legal affairs of the first independent state.
From 971 onward, in his capacity as Grand Preceptor of the Do Ho Phu, Luu Co was entrusted by Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang with governing Dai La Citadel and administering the entire former region of Giao Chau (essentially the northern region of present-day Vietnam), described as “the largest granary as well as the reservoir of manpower and resources,” the most strategic and prosperous part of Dai Co Viet. He made great contributions to the renovation and reconstruction of Dai La Citadel—formerly the An Nam Protectorate citadel under the Tang dynasty—transforming it into a citadel of the independent and sovereign state of Dai Co Viet. From this citadel oriented toward the north, Luu Co also had the southern-facing citadel repaired, aligning it toward Hoa Lu, the capital established by Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang.
Grand Preceptor Luu Co governed and maintained Dai La Citadel continuously for about 40 years (971–1010) across three dynasties, preparing all necessary conditions for the successful relocation of the capital by Ly Cong Uan from Hoa Lu to Thang Long in 1010. In that sense, he was the one who effectively “handed over the key” of Dai La Citadel to the new dynasty.
Architectural Landscape
The communal house is built according to the traditional architectural style of northern Vietnamese village communal houses, consisting of a main building with a wide sloping tiled roof that creates a solid and ancient appearance. The roof is covered with dark brown tiles, and over time the evenly layered tiles have created the moss-covered look typical of historic structures. Along the roof ridge are decorative motifs of sacred animals and traditional patterns running along the top, enhancing the solemn and artistic character of the building.
The façade of the communal house consists of multiple bays, with large wooden doors painted in a reddish-brown color. The doors can be widely opened, creating a spacious interior suitable for ritual ceremonies and community activities of the villagers. In front of the communal house is a set of three steps leading up to the elevated foundation, indicating that the structure was raised to prevent dampness and to create a sense of grandeur.
On both sides of the façade are sturdy masonry walls with small windows decorated with ventilated patterns. On one of the veranda columns hangs a pair of vertical parallel sentences, contributing to the cultural and spiritual elements associated with the communal house. Overall, the building bears the traditional yellow color often seen in historical monuments, combined with the red color of the wooden door system, creating harmony in the architecture.
Regarding the surrounding landscape, the communal house is situated within a relatively open compound. In front is a wide courtyard used for festivals and community gatherings. Around the site are green trees and natural terrain forming a protective setting, while behind it lies a hill or elevated land that creates a firm backing according to traditional feng shui concepts. Altogether, the space forms an architectural and landscape complex that is both ancient and closely connected with rural village life.
Festival
Dai Tu Communal House Festival
Every year, the Dai Tu Communal House festival is held on two occasions: the 3rd day of the first lunar month and the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. These dates are chosen by the villagers to commemorate the birth and the death anniversary of the village’s tutelary deity. The festival not only expresses gratitude to the guardian deity but also provides an opportunity for the community to gather, strengthen bonds, and preserve traditional cultural values.
Ritual Section
The ritual section is conducted solemnly at the communal house with traditional ceremonies. Before the main festival day, villagers clean and decorate the communal house and prepare offerings. On the main day, village elders, representatives of family lineages, and local residents participate in incense offering and ceremonial worship of the tutelary deity. Offerings usually include incense, flowers, betel and areca nuts, sticky rice, chicken, rice wine, and local products, expressing the villagers’ reverence for the deity. The ritual is carried out according to traditional procedures in a solemn atmosphere, reflecting the moral principle of gratitude to ancestors and praying for peace, good harvests, and prosperity.
Festive Activities
Following the solemn ritual is the festive section, held in a lively and joyful atmosphere. This is an opportunity for villagers and visitors to participate in cultural and recreational activities that reflect the rural identity of the region. Traditional games often organized include tug-of-war, wrestling, chess playing, cultural performances, and other community activities. The festive section helps strengthen solidarity among generations in the village while preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of the locality.
