Vị thần thứ hai là Phạm Thượng Quận, tên thật là Phạm Đình Trọng, quê thôn Khinh Dao, xã An Hồng, huyện An Dương, đỗ Tiến sĩ khoa Kỷ Mùi (1739).

Lam Dong Communal House

Name and Geographic Location

The present-day Lam Dong Commune, Thuy Nguyen District, is located along the left bank of the Cam River, occupying a favorable geographical position for both waterway transportation and socio-economic development. Notably, the area also features a large tidal channel flowing from Kien Bai through Binh Dong before emptying into the Cam River, forming a small islet that includes the villages of Hoang Pha, Loi Dong, Binh Dong, and Phuong Lang (formerly known as Hoa Lang). This distinctive riverine terrain contributed early on to the formation of a stable settlement space closely associated with the productive and daily activities of local residents.

According to researchers Nguyen Van Chinh and Nguyen Quang Ngoc, the villages of Lam Dong, Hoang Pha, and Dong Ly emerged as early as the period of Chinese domination, making them among the earliest settlements in the area. Based on the memories and oral traditions of village elders, these place names originally belonged to the Tung Dong region. However, due to the taboo on the name of Binh An Vuong Trinh Tung, the name Tung Dong was changed to Tong Dong and was used for a long period thereafter.

Thanks to its riverside location near the sea, its extensive land resources, and abundant freshwater supply, the Lam Dong area attracted settlers from many places at an early stage. Local residents not only developed agriculture and fishing but also took advantage of natural conditions to grow mulberry trees, raise silkworms, and weave silk. In addition, several traditional handicrafts such as carpentry, masonry, and blacksmithing emerged and developed, diversifying the local economic structure. River-based trade and exchange of goods were therefore quite active, contributing to a prosperous economic landscape for the region.

Compared with other villages in the area, Lam village was long regarded as a prosperous and well-developed community, with relatively comprehensive material and spiritual life. The village possessed a full range of traditional cultural and religious institutions, including a communal house, pagoda, shrine, temple, and ancestral halls; customs and practices were generally gentle and orderly, clearly reflecting the long-standing cultural traditions of the community. However, through many historical upheavals and wars, most ancient architectural structures were destroyed or gradually lost over time. Today, within the entire commune, only one ancient pagoda with its famous stupa remains preserved, considered the most representative surviving trace of the former cultural and religious space of Lam Dong.

History and Deities Worshipped

According to the inscription Tan tao Hoa Lac dinh bi (rubbing preserved at the Institute of Han-Nom Studies, reference no. 8439), erected in the ninth year of the Le Chinh Hoa era (1668), it is possible to clearly discern the organizational scale and strong sense of community of local residents in the construction of the village communal house. The inscription records that when a new communal house was built, each villager was required to contribute a portion of rice and money, demonstrating the collective solidarity and shared effort of the entire community. The village also established written regulations and engraved the names of contributors on stone steles to pass them down to future generations.

These regulations also specified the annual ritual ceremonies held at the communal house. Each year, the village appointed six chief officiants, each responsible for offering two pork trays, each six tac thick, along with a tray of sticky rice prepared from twenty-five dau of rice. The nhap tich ky phuc ceremony was entrusted to two village sections to prepare offerings. In addition, during the night performances at the communal house gate, rewards were distributed equally, with each participant receiving one string of cash, thereby encouraging community cultural activities.

Based on available sources, the communal house was likely constructed around 1688. However, due to multiple renovations and historical upheavals, detailed records of earlier repairs no longer exist, and even village elders can no longer recall them clearly. The major renovation that took place between 1931 and 1935, however, is still vividly remembered. During this period, the village economy flourished, many villagers working away from home achieved success and prosperity, and thus contributed generously in labor and finances to the communal house project.

At that time, Lam village also had a renowned carpenters’ guild led by Ong Pho Bang and Ong Truong Truc, both highly skilled craftsmen who had built many communal houses in the region. To ensure construction quality, the village hired two carpenters’ guilds to compete, offering a prize. Each guild was responsible for a portion of the structure based on a common design, while keeping their professional techniques confidential. On the day of assembly, the structural components from both guilds fit together perfectly, with finely carved reliefs that made it difficult for villagers to judge which guild was superior. Ultimately, the Thuy Nguyen carpenters’ guild was declared the winner thanks to its beautifully designed and technically superior dau vong bracket system.

The completed communal house consisted of five main bays, two side bays, and two rear sanctuaries, forming an imposing and architecturally refined structure. At the time, Lam villagers were extremely proud, considering their communal house the largest and most beautiful in the entire district. On the inauguration day, a grand festival lasting many days was held, with officials invited to attend, creating a lively and festive atmosphere throughout the region.

Lam Dong Communal House worshipped six tutelary deities, although the hagiographies and royal decrees are no longer complete today. Nevertheless, based on documents and oral tradition, several deities can be identified with certainty. First is Duc Thanh Niem, also known as Pham Tu Nghi, from Niem Nghia Commune, An Duong District, a distinguished general of the Mac dynasty who once held the title of Pho ma Do uy Thai uy Thanh Quoc. After his death, he was canonized by the court as a beneficent deity under the title Nam Hai Dai Vuong.

The second deity is Pham Thuong Quan, whose real name was Pham Dinh Trong, from Kinh Dao Hamlet, An Hong Commune, An Duong District. He obtained the doctoral degree in the Ky Mui examination (1739). He rendered great service in suppressing the uprisings of Quan Heo and Quan He, pacifying the Nghe An region, and defeating sea pirates at Quan Lan whom the Qing court could not subdue. After his death, he was posthumously honored as a beneficent deity; the villages of Kinh Dao, Lam Dong, and Trung Thanh Lang (An Lao District) all established temples to commemorate him.

The communal house also worships a Le-dynasty consort of the Vu clan, from Trung Hanh Commune, An Duong District. The Vu clan of Trung Hanh was renowned for its prominence, with many high-ranking officials serving at court.

Which may be rendered as: “The Vu clan gave birth to a palace consort; the noble land of Trung Hanh was heaven-blessed with sanctity. The Le dynasty pacified the sea rebels; in death she returned to the sacred land of Tung Dong.”

According to the genealogy of the Vu clan of Trung Hanh, one daughter of the clan was taken into the palace by King Le Hien Tong. However, local history of Lam Dong holds that the name “Vu Thi San” is inaccurate, as it violates naming taboos; the word san in the parallel sentence should be understood as “to give birth,” paired with thanh (“to pacify”), rather than as a personal name.

According to folk tradition, the communal house also worships two additional deities: Trieu Quang Phuc, a talented general of the Early Ly period (544–602), and Nguyen Minh, a native of Lam Dong who participated in the Bach Dang campaign of 938, contributing to the defeat of the Southern Han forces. In addition, Lam Dong Communal House venerates twelve Tien cong, the founding ancestors of the first lineages to reclaim and establish the village, namely the Cao, Dam, Nguyen Dieu, Pham, Dang, Ngo, Vu, Tran, Doan, Hoang, Lai, and Dao clans.

After the wars against the French and the Americans, the valuable communal house of Lam village built in 1931–1935 fell completely into ruin. Following the renewal policies of the Party and State, the people of Lam village expressed a strong desire to restore their communal house. This legitimate aspiration was supported by the leadership of Thuy Nguyen District and Lam Dong Commune. Villagers contributed both funds and labor; descendants working far from home enthusiastically donated, with some contributions reaching as much as 350 million VND. After ten years of overcoming numerous difficulties, Lam Dong Communal House has now been largely reconstructed, consisting of three main bays and two side bays of the great hall, and two bays of the rear sanctuary, primarily built of Ninh Van stone (Ninh Binh) and precious hardwoods.

Architectural Landscape

Lam Dong Communal House bears the typical characteristics of traditional village communal houses in the Northern Delta, distinguished by its imposing yet harmonious appearance within the rural landscape. The structure faces a spacious courtyard, forming an open tien minh duong. The roof is covered with dark reddish-brown traditional tiles, weathered over time with moss, while the four roof corners curve upward, with ridge ends carved in the forms of dragons and phoenixes symbolizing sacred protection over the village.

The system of columns, verandas, and triple-step stairways is made of blue stone, symmetrically arranged and structurally solid. In front of the communal house lies a wide, level brick courtyard, serving as the venue for community activities, festivals, and ritual ceremonies. The exterior space is both solemn and closely connected to everyday village life, clearly reflecting the role of the communal house as the cultural and religious center of Lam Dong.

In front of the communal house is Lam Dong Lake (also known as Lake 108), a historical site associated with the resistance movement of Hai Phong City. Within the lake grounds stands a memorial monument built in 1969, exactly twenty years after the massacre of February 16–17, 1949. This monument holds profound significance in commemorating and honoring the cadres, soldiers, and patriotic citizens who heroically sacrificed their lives for national independence and freedom. The presence of the lake and memorial expands the communal house space from a traditional religious institution into a historical and revolutionary landscape, creating a dual value that is both cultural and historical.

Inside, Lam Dong Communal House leaves a strong impression through its refined decorative carving and ornamentation. The interior space is organized along a sacred axis, with bays arranged in a compact and symmetrical manner. Large wooden columns, lacquered and gilded, create an atmosphere of solemnity while showcasing the high technical skill of past artisans.

At the center is the worship space, featuring intricately carved altars, thrones, and incense tables adorned with traditional motifs such as dragons, phoenixes, floral patterns, and cloud scrolls. The dominant colors are vermilion lacquer and gilded gold, creating a sacred and dignified atmosphere. On either side of the altar are ancient ritual objects such as bronze tripods, crane statues, censers, and ceramic vases, reflecting the completeness and solemnity of rituals dedicated to the tutelary deities and ancestors.

Horizontal lacquered boards and Han-character parallel sentences, gilded in gold and hung high on beams and columns, not only possess artistic value but also convey moral philosophy, praising merit, filial piety, and the patriotic spirit of the Lam Dong community. The entire interior space thus embodies a harmonious integration of architectural art, folk belief, and historical memory, highlighting the profound cultural depth of the communal house.

Recognition

In consideration of its multifaceted values, Lam Dong Communal House was recognized as a Historical–Cultural Monument by the People’s Committee of the city under Decision No. 161-QD/UBND dated January 27, 2011.
