Dinh Ly Nhan (Dong Anh District, Hanoi)

Geographical Location and Name

Dinh Ly Nhan is located in Ly Nhan hamlet, Duc Tu Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi. This area lies to the north of the ancient capital of Thang Long and has a long history associated with the development of the Kinh Bac – Thang Long region. According to historical records and local tradition, present-day Ly Nhan hamlet has existed for a long time and has undergone several name changes over different periods. In the past, its vernacular name was Vu, a folk name that had existed very early in the life of local residents. In the early centuries of the Common Era, the area was called Duong An settlement, indicating that it was once an organized residential unit in the region. During the Nguyen period, at a certain time, the place was also known as Phi hamlet. Later, around the beginning of the twentieth century, the name Ly Nhan was officially adopted and has been maintained until today. These changes in names over time not only reflect administrative shifts but also illustrate the long-term development of the local community.

Ly Nhan hamlet lies in the central area of Duc Tu Commune, with relatively flat terrain. It is surrounded by long-established residential areas interspersed with rice fields and a network of village roads and alleys typical of the Northern Vietnamese countryside. From the center of Dong Anh District, Ly Nhan hamlet can be reached quite conveniently via inter-communal roads that have been expanded and upgraded in recent years. Although it is not far from the center of Hanoi, the area still preserves a traditional rural landscape and retains many elements of the cultural life of the local community.

Dinh Ly Nhan was built in the center of the village on a spacious and elevated piece of land, consistent with the traditional concept of selecting a site for constructing a communal house. According to customary practice, village communal houses are usually located in open spaces that are convenient for villagers to gather during festivals, communal activities, and ceremonies to worship the village tutelary deities. Therefore, the location of the communal house has not only geographical significance but also reflects the community’s respect for a shared cultural and spiritual space.

The name “Dinh Ly Nhan” originates from the name of Ly Nhan village, a place name that has existed for a long time in the Dong Anh region. Naming the communal house after the village is a common tradition in Vietnamese village culture, expressing the close connection between the communal house and the local community. Over many generations, this name has been maintained and has become an important part of the spiritual life as well as the historical memory of the villagers. Today, Dinh Ly Nhan is not only a place for worshiping the village tutelary deities but also a venue for cultural activities, traditional festivals, and communal gatherings of the local community.

History and Deities Worshiped

Dinh Ly Nhan is dedicated to two village tutelary deities, Dai Vuong A Lu and A La Nang De, who are regarded as generals that contributed to the uprising of the Trung Sisters against the domination of the Eastern Han dynasty. According to legends and sacred records preserved at the communal house, the two were sisters born into a family with a martial tradition. Their father was a military commander in the Co Chau region, corresponding to present-day Thanh Oai District. He was known for his integrity and refusal to submit to the harsh rule of the occupying authorities. Because of his firm attitude and lack of cooperation with the officials led by To Dinh, he was eventually killed. After this incident, the mother and her two daughters had to leave their homeland and seek refuge in Duong An settlement, which corresponds to the present-day area of Ly Nhan.

There, the two sisters gradually grew up and witnessed the oppression and exploitation that local people suffered under the rule of the northern authorities. When the Trung Sisters raised the banner of uprising and called upon the people to stand up and regain independence for the country, the two sisters quickly responded and mobilized local residents to join the insurgent forces. Thanks to their courage and organizational ability, they participated in many important battles against the occupying forces. After the initial victories and the enthronement of the Trung Sisters as rulers, the court granted Nang De a fief at Duong An settlement, which corresponds to the present-day Ly Nhan hamlet. This shows that the area was directly connected to the careers and merits of the two female generals.

However, later the Han dynasty sent the general Ma Yuan to invade the country once again. During the resistance against this invasion, the two sisters continued to fight alongside Trung Vuong to defend the nation. The war was extremely fierce, and eventually the two heroines sacrificed their lives in the battle of Cam Khe. Their sacrifice left a profound impression on the local people. Therefore, the residents of the Duong An – Ly Nhan area established the communal house to worship them as the village tutelary deities, regarding them as protective spirits of the community.

Because this area had once been granted as a fief, the worship of Dai Vuong A Lu and A La Nang De has been maintained continuously through many generations. Annual rituals and ceremonies not only express the people’s gratitude toward historical heroes but also help preserve the cultural traditions and patriotic spirit of the locality.

In addition to the worship of the two principal tutelary deities, Dinh Ly Nhan also includes the worship of the Later Deity Cao Bien. According to documents preserved at the communal house, this figure was recognized as someone who had once helped the villagers in the past, and therefore the local people honored and worshiped him to commemorate his contributions. This reflects a common feature in Vietnamese folk beliefs: besides the main deities, villagers also worship individuals who rendered services to the community, expressing the moral principle of remembering one’s origins.

Beyond its ancient historical value, Dinh Ly Nhan is also associated with many important events during the modern resistance wars of the nation. During the resistance war against French colonialism, in 1951, soldiers and local guerrilla forces organized and achieved victory in an important battle right in the area of the communal house. After this defeat, enemy troops conducted a sweep through the village in retaliation. However, the people of Ly Nhan bravely rose up to protect the communal house, preventing the enemy from destroying this sacred structure of the village.

In the following years, from 1952 to 1954, Dinh Ly Nhan continued to be used as an observation point and a base supporting the military activities of resistance forces. From this location, the resistance forces organized several effective ambushes in nearby areas such as Dung Bridge and Tay Bridge, contributing to the overall success of the resistance movement in the locality.

During the resistance war against the United States, Dinh Ly Nhan took on another role in the defense of the country. When the war expanded and many agencies needed to evacuate from central areas, the communal house was used as a storage and evacuation site for supplies belonging to the Ministry of National Defense, specifically the General Department of Chemicals. At that time, the communal house was not only a place of traditional worship but also became a site directly serving the national resistance effort.

These historical traces have made Dinh Ly Nhan not only valuable in terms of culture and religious belief but also deeply significant historically, reflecting the struggle to defend the nation by many generations of local residents. The combination of traditional historical elements and revolutionary heritage has contributed to the special value of Dinh Ly Nhan within the cultural heritage system of Dong Anh in particular and Hanoi in general.

Architectural Landscape

Dinh Ly Nhan is not very large in scale but still retains the solemn appearance and distinctive features of traditional communal house architecture in the Northern Delta. The main structure of the complex is the Dai Dinh hall, built in a four-roof style with curved roof ridges, creating a graceful and ancient appearance. This roof style not only has aesthetic value but also reflects traditional architectural techniques, helping the structure adapt to the rainy climate of northern Vietnam. When viewed as a whole, the roof curves upward at the four corners, creating a sense of elegance and solidity while emphasizing the central position of the communal house within the village space.

The structural layout of the Dai Dinh is quite well organized, with six rows of columns arranged symmetrically to form a sturdy framework for the entire structure. The large wooden columns are connected through a system of beams, braces, brackets, and trusses, ensuring durability while creating a spacious interior suitable for worship ceremonies and community activities. Thanks to this arrangement, the interior space is airy and appropriate for rituals, meetings, and traditional festivals.

One of the notable features of the architecture of Dinh Ly Nhan is the artistic decorative system on the wooden components. Decorative details are mainly concentrated on the brackets and beam ends, where artisans of the past demonstrated their refined carving skills. Many carvings were executed using openwork and relief techniques, creating vivid forms with depth and high artistic value. The subjects of these carvings often include sacred animals, floral motifs, and decorative patterns symbolizing good fortune. Overall, the decorative style of the communal house bears strong characteristics of Nguyen-period art, especially around the nineteenth century when many parts of the structure were repaired and supplemented.

In addition to its architectural value, Dinh Ly Nhan preserves a relatively rich and diverse collection of relics and ritual objects. Among them, the most notable are ten royal ordination documents granted by feudal dynasties to the village tutelary deities. Notably, one of these documents dates from the Tay Son period, indicating that the worship of these deities at the communal house was recognized and endorsed by several dynasties. These documents are valuable not only in terms of religious belief but also as precious historical sources for studying the development of the communal house and Ly Nhan village.

Moreover, the communal house preserves many other valuable antiquities such as worship thrones, statues of the tutelary deities, sword stands, horizontal lacquered boards, parallel sentences, and various traditional ritual objects. Most of these artifacts were carefully crafted in classical artistic styles, reflecting the craftsmanship and aesthetic sense of past artisans. Besides serving religious rituals, these relics also enhance the historical, cultural, and artistic value of Dinh Ly Nhan and help later generations better understand the religious life and traditions of the local community.

Classification

Dinh Ly Nhan was recognized as a historical and architectural–artistic monument by the Ministry of Culture and Information in 1995.
