Ngo Family Mausoleum (Hop Thinh, Bac Ninh)

Name and Geographical Location

The Ngo Family Mausoleum (also known as Linh Quang Tu or the Tomb of Ngo Tuong Cong) is located in Thai Tho Village, Hop Thinh Commune, Bac Ninh Province (formerly belonging to Que Trao Canton, Hiep Hoa District, Bac Ha Prefecture, Kinh Bac region). Today, it belongs to Hop Thinh Commune, Bac Ninh Province.

History and Historical Figure

The Ngo Family Mausoleum was originally constructed in 1697 during the reign of Emperor Le Hy Tong and restored in 1714. It is one of the earliest surviving mausoleum complexes in the Kinh Bac region, predating both Dinh Huong Mausoleum and the royal tomb system of the Nguyen emperors in Hue. The monument served both as the burial site of Phuong Quan Cong Ngo Cong Que and as the ancestral worship space of the Ngo lineage — a family with many military officials serving under the Le Trung Hung dynasty.

According to surviving documents and stone inscriptions, Ngo Cong Que was born into a family with generations of official service. His father, Phuc An Hau Ngo Cong Tuan, held the office of Military Counselor of Thai Nguyen region and was granted the honorary title “Tuong cong hien cung dai phu, tham doc thai vu, tu ve quan su vu.” His grandfather, Thai Son Hau Ngo Cong Van, was bestowed the title “Vu liet tuong quan, tham doc than vu, tu ve quan su vu.” Through these noble titles and honorific designations, it is evident that the Ngo lineage was a distinguished military family with an important position in the military administration of the Le court.

In the 18th year of the Chinh Hoa reign, corresponding to the year Dinh Suu (1697), Ngo Cong Que received the honorary rank “Dac tien kim tu vinh loc dai phu.” He held many important positions at court, including Deputy Left Secretary of the Inner Palace, Left Military Office Official, Director of the Tu Le Giam, and Grand Eunuch, while also being granted the noble title Loc Hau.

In the year Quy Ty (1713), he was appointed Governor of Thai Nguyen region — then a strategically important area in the northern midlands and mountainous frontier. At that time, he concurrently held positions in the Tu Le Giam and the Bac Quan Do Doc Phu, and was promoted to the honorary rank “Dac tien phu quoc Thuong tuong quan, Ta do doc,” while receiving the noble title Phuong Quan Cong. These were among the highest official and military ranks of the period, demonstrating that he enjoyed exceptional trust from the royal court in both military affairs and local administration.

The stone stele preserved at the mausoleum today records his official titles in Chinese characters: “Phung sai Thai Nguyen xu tran cai quan dac tien phu quoc Thuong tuong quan, Tu le giam Tong thai giam Bac quan Do doc phu, do doc kiem su, gia phong tang Ta do doc Phuong Quan cong, Ngo tuong cong huy Que.”

The inscription not only confirms the identity and offices of Ngo Cong Que but also reflects the ceremonial traditions of rewarding and commemorating high-ranking officials during the Le Trung Hung period.

According to local oral traditions and family genealogy, Ngo Cong Que was a talented scholar and military leader with a gentle temperament, calm demeanor, and a reputation widely respected by the people. During his years in office, he was trusted by both the royal court and the Trinh Lords, receiving important responsibilities related to maintaining security and stability in various regions. Owing to his achievements in suppressing rebellions, protecting frontier regions, and stabilizing local populations, he received many rewards and privileges from the court. However, rather than using these resources solely for personal or family benefit, he devoted much of his wealth to supporting his native region.

Local sources indicate that he contributed labor and financial resources to the restoration and construction of many public works such as communal houses, pagodas, and bridges serving community life, notably Cheo Communal House and Cheo Pagoda in the Que Trao region. These structures not only fulfilled religious functions but also served as important communal centers for local residents. The fact that such a high-ranking official used his wealth to support his homeland earned him deep respect among the people.

After his death, Ngo Cong Que was deified by the people of Que Trao Canton and worshipped alongside the village tutelary deity in the communal house. This demonstrates that his influence extended beyond official circles and remained closely connected to local communal life. Consequently, the Ngo Family Mausoleum today is not merely the burial place of a nobleman but also a historical monument reflecting the role of military officials during the Le dynasty, the scholarly traditions of Kinh Bac, and the close relationship between officials and village communities of the period.

Architectural Landscape

Originally, Ngo Cong Que intended to construct the mausoleum entirely from green stone. However, fearing that green stone might later be dismantled and burned for lime production, he decided instead to use salt stone and laterite stone quarried from Ia Mountain approximately 1.5 kilometers away. Skilled craftsmen were hired to quarry and carve the stones directly at the site before transporting them to the mausoleum.

According to local legend, when carts carrying stone elephants and horses passed the gate of Ia Temple dedicated to Saint Hung Linh Cong, the carts suddenly could no longer move forward. Ngo Cong Que then performed offerings and donated a pair of stone horses and a pair of stone elephants to Ia Temple. From that moment onward, the transportation of stone materials for the mausoleum proceeded smoothly.

The mausoleum has a rectangular layout facing south and covers an area of more than one sao (approximately 400 square meters). In front of the complex lies a rectangular pond. Originally, all four sides of the enclosure were surrounded by laterite walls. Today, the northern, eastern, and western walls have mostly disappeared and been rebuilt in brick, while the southern laterite wall remains relatively intact, standing approximately 2.15 meters high.

The entrance gate to the mausoleum is constructed in the form of a vaulted archway. On both sides of the doorway base are relief carvings of martial guards, while two stone dogs stand at the edges of the gate.

In the courtyard before the tomb stands a symmetrical arrangement of ceremonial statues lining both sides of the sacred pathway, including two kneeling elephants, two pairs of attendants standing beside horses, and two crocodile figures. In front of the burial area is a stone incense altar used for rituals. Beside the altar sit two nghe creatures in seated posture with raised heads. Two stone tables nearby were used for placing ritual offerings. Behind the incense altar and before the entrance to the burial chamber stands a large low stone platform used for laying ceremonial mats and offerings during sacrificial rites.

Behind the incense altar stands the gate leading into the burial enclosure, measuring 15.1 by 12.5 meters and surrounded by stone walls approximately 1.9 meters high. Relief carvings of attendants appear on the gate platform, while above the entrance are the engraved characters “Linh Quang Tu.”

At the center of the burial area stands a square stone tower with two roof levels. The upper level has openings on all four sides, topped with a square finial, while the roof corners curve upward in the shape of traditional shoe tips.

To the north of the burial area stands the stele house, designed in the form of a four-sided stone tower resembling the tomb tower but smaller in scale. Each side contains a small arched opening, and beneath each opening are carvings of two seated qilin figures in worship posture. The stone stele itself measures 1.25 meters high excluding the roof, one meter long, and 0.5 meters wide. It bears the title “Linh Quang Tu Chi Bi Ky” and dates from the 18th year of Chinh Hoa (1697) and the first year of Vinh Thinh (1705).

All four sides of the stele are inscribed with Han-Nom characters summarizing the merits of Ngo Tuong Cong toward the country and his homeland, as well as recording the construction of the mausoleum in 1697 and its restoration in 1714.

The Ngo Family Mausoleum is a monumental architectural work distinguished by elaborate stone carvings executed with remarkable technical skill and refinement. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of stone sculptural art in Bac Ninh Province.

Classification

The Ngo Family Mausoleum was recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Relic in 1964.
