Name and Geographic Location
Lang Truong Dien is the burial site of Nguyen Phuc Nguyen (1563–1635), posthumously titled Hy Tong Hieu Van Hoang De, the second of the nine Nguyen lords. He was commonly known as Chua Sai or Nguyen Hy Tong.
The mausoleum is located on Hai Cat Mountain, Huong Tho Commune, Huong Tra Town, Hue City (formerly Hai Cat Commune, Huong Tra District). Initially, Nguyen Phuc Nguyen was buried at Son Phan in Quang Dien District; his remains were later reinterred at the present location.
The site lies on the left bank of the Huong River, approximately 200 meters from the riverbank and about 6 kilometers southwest of Hue city center (in a straight line). From Lang Truong Dien to Lang Truong Hung—the tomb of Lord Nguyen Phuc Tan—is about 650 meters to the north.
History and Historical Figure
According to Dai Nam Thuc Luc, Nguyen Phuc Nguyen died in 1635 after a 22-year reign, at the age of 73. He was first buried at Son Phan (Quang Dien District). Later, his coffin was reinterred at Hai Cat Mountain in Huong Tra, Thua Thien (now Huong Tra Town, Thua Thien Hue Province). The mausoleum was named Truong Dien. During the reign of Gia Long, he was posthumously granted the temple name Hy Tong.
Nguyen Phuc Nguyen succeeded and further developed the foundations established by Nguyen Hoang. Under his leadership, the Dang Trong government was progressively consolidated into a stable and organized political entity with independent power and resources. He reformed the administrative apparatus, strengthened defenses, built up the military, and promoted capable individuals. As a result, society remained relatively stable and the people’s livelihoods were safeguarded.
During the Trinh–Nguyen War, he directly organized and commanded the defense of Dang Trong. He reinforced defensive ramparts, strengthened military preparedness, and established solid defensive formations. Under his direction, Nguyen forces repeatedly repelled attacks from Dang Ngoai (the Northern Realm), secured southern territories, and ensured the long-term survival and development of the Dang Trong regime.
After his death, he was buried at Son Phan and later reinterred at Hai Cat. Under Gia Long’s reign, he was posthumously honored with the temple name Hy Tong, and the mausoleum was formally designated Truong Dien.
Lang Truong Dien is situated in a relatively secluded location, distant from major transportation routes and surrounded by dense vegetation, making access somewhat difficult. Due to limited visitation, the site was for a long time inadequately maintained.
Records from 2014 indicate that many areas within the complex were overgrown with weeds and shrubs, and sections of the enclosure walls had deteriorated or partially collapsed.
In 2015, the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue Province officially classified the tomb of Nguyen Phuc Nguyen as a Provincial Historical Site, providing a legal basis for its preservation and management.
Architecture and Landscape
The mausoleum faces south. The overall layout consists of two enclosing walls surrounding the burial area.
Outer enclosure: constructed of basalt stone with brick coping; perimeter 120.5 meters; height 2.5 meters.
Inner enclosure: also built of basalt stone with brick coping—an uncommon feature compared to many other Nguyen lords’ tombs that were constructed entirely of brick. The inner wall has a perimeter of 66.9 meters and a height of 2.02 meters; its front side features two gate pillars leading into the tomb area.
Between the gates of the two enclosures stands a screen wall (binh phong), now without surviving decorative elements.
The tomb is low and flat in form, composed of two rectangular tiers:
Upper tier: 210 cm wide, 322 cm long, 17 cm high.
Lower tier: 259 cm wide, 372 cm long, 23 cm high.
In front stands a low incense altar of simple geometric form, without elaborate decoration. The overall architectural style is rustic and solid, reflecting the characteristics of early Nguyen lords’ mausoleum architecture.
Artifacts
The remaining artifacts at the site consist mainly of original architectural components: basalt enclosure walls, brick coping, gate pillars, the screen wall, and the two-tiered tomb block. Decorative porcelain inlays that may once have adorned the screen wall no longer survive, leaving only faint traces on the surface.
Classification
In 2015, the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue Province officially designated the tomb of Nguyen Phuc Nguyen as a Provincial Historical Site.

Niveau superieur : largeur 210 cm, longueur 322 cm, hauteur 17 cm.
Niveau inferieur : largeur 259 cm, longueur 372 cm, hauteur 23 cm.
