Name and Geographic Location
Dinh Quang Monastery is located in Phu Thanh village, Hiep Thanh commune, Duc Trong district, Lam Dong province. This monastery is situated amidst the peaceful space of the highlands, exuding a serene and nature-integrated atmosphere, and serves as a spiritual center for a large number of local Buddhists.
History and Key Figures
The land where Dinh Quang Monastery now stands was once pristine forest, later cleared to serve as a place for spiritual practice. In 1958, Mrs. Tu Yen Do purchased this land and offered it to the Triple Gem (Tam Bao), with the foundation master Ho Tong – the founder of the Theravada lineage in Vietnam – representing the Sangha to accept the donation. Ho Tong resided here during the rainy-season retreat (Vassa) and subsequently entrusted the monastery to successive disciples for management.
From that time until 1992, the monastery underwent three generations of abbots, including one monk and two nuns. In 1992, Venerable Phap Luc accepted the invitation of Dai Duc Dinh Luc, with the agreement of the senior monk Ho Nhan, to take over the monastery.
Initially, in 1960, Ho Tong built a small stilt house as a residence and meditation hall, without a main hall. The main hall was only constructed in 2009. In 2015, Venerable Phap Luc further developed the infrastructure, including two monks’ quarters, an assembly hall, a kitchen, and the Buddha’s Garden. By 2020, Elder Vien Minh renovated the main hall into a large and solemn stupa-like structure as it stands today and appointed Dai Duc Nguyen Chanh from Buu Long Monastery to assume management.
Currently, the abbot of Dinh Quang Monastery is Bhikkhu Phap Luc, and the monastery administrator is Bhikkhu Nguyen Chanh.
Architecture and Landscape
Dinh Quang Monastery appears as a serene spiritual oasis within Phu Thanh village, Hiep Thanh commune. With a simple yet solemn architecture, the monastery reflects the distinctive characteristics of Theravada Buddhism, emphasizing stillness and using simplicity as a foundation for the manifestation of wisdom.
The main hall is designed in an open format, with minimal decorative elements, focusing instead on spaciousness and airiness. The monastery’s roof soars gracefully, evoking a sense of upliftment for practitioners to transcend mundane concerns. At the center of the main hall sits the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha meditating under the Bodhi tree, surrounded by smaller statues depicting the Parinirvana posture and attendant monks, embodying reverence for the Triple Gem according to the Theravada tradition.
Behind the Buddha statue is a mural depicting a sacred forest and a tranquil river, reminiscent of the Uruvelā forest where the Buddha attained enlightenment. The side walls display verses in poetic meter (Kệ) drawn from the Dhammapada, echoing timeless wisdom within the mundane world. The hall exudes a meditative atmosphere, with soft light filtering through tall windows, calming the mind of visitors.
The Dharma Hall is designed with solemnity and tranquility, reflecting the spirit of early Buddhist teachings in both architectural details and spatial arrangement. At its center sits the Buddha meditating in the lotus posture, serene and radiating inner concentration and liberated wisdom. The statue is housed within a grand shrine, adorned with elegantly carved motifs and gilded without ostentation. The Dharma Hall is spacious, airy, and flooded with natural light, complemented by two large gilded pillars, creating a majestic yet refined environment.
The surrounding landscape retains a pure and natural aesthetic. Gravel paths wind through neatly trimmed flower beds and bonsai, providing cool shaded spaces. The monastery grounds also feature a wide courtyard for lay practitioners to gather, perform rituals, and attend teachings. This space functions not only as a ceremonial area but also as a practice field for cultivating mindfulness and wisdom in daily life.
Dinh Quang Monastery does not emphasize grandeur but radiates significance through simplicity, diligence, and serenity – reflecting the essence of Theravada Buddhism: “Live simply, keep a calm mind, remain mindful in every breath.”
Artifacts
As a Theravada monastery, Dinh Quang does not focus on preserving ancient or archaeological artifacts. Instead, it emphasizes meditation practice and study. Key structures, including the main hall (stupa), Dharma Hall, monks’ quarters, kitchen, and meditation grounds, are built in the characteristic style of Theravada Buddhism, emphasizing simplicity, serenity, and harmony with nature.
Events and Festivals
Annually, Dinh Quang Monastery holds three major festivals during the full moons of the first, fourth, and sixth lunar months – significant spiritual occasions for local Buddhists. Each festival is carefully prepared, solemn, and meaningful, providing an opportunity for lay practitioners to gather around the Triple Gem, cultivate merit, and sow virtuous seeds.
-
Full Moon of the First Lunar Month (Nguyen Tieu Festival): Marks the beginning of a new year of practice. Buddhists gather to chant, confess, listen to teachings, uphold precepts, and cultivate compassion and equanimity. The atmosphere is lively yet tranquil, imbued with the auspicious colors of early spring.
-
Full Moon of the Fourth Lunar Month (Vesak Festival): Commemorates the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha. Celebrations include bathing the Buddha statue, offering flowers, chanting Vesak sutras, and Dharma talks on the Buddha’s birth and enlightenment, inspiring gratitude and commitment to the Buddha’s path of compassion and wisdom.
-
Full Moon of the Sixth Lunar Month (Uposatha – End of Vassa): Marks the completion of the three-month rainy-season retreat for the Sangha, a time to purify body and mind and advance in spiritual practice. Lay practitioners come to pay respects, offer donations, and confess, creating an atmosphere of joyous serenity.
Additionally, the Kathina Ceremony, a major Theravada festival held after the Vassa season (typically September–October lunar calendar), is one of the year’s most significant almsgiving rituals. Lay supporters offer new robes (cāsa) to the monks, expressing gratitude and support for the Sangha. At Dinh Quang, the Kathina ceremony is conducted solemnly yet joyfully, including the full sequence of rituals: inviting the Sangha, offering robes, formal recitations, merit dedication, and Dharma talks on Kathina.
Classification
Although Dinh Quang Monastery does not house ancient artifacts or hold an official heritage ranking, it remains an important spiritual site, hosting traditional Theravada Buddhist festivals such as the Kathina robe-offering ceremony and attracting numerous Buddhists and visitors.
