Robe
Date: The Nguyen dynasty, 19th–20th century
Description: Brown fabric
Explanation: In Buddhism, robes and bowls are revered and honored, as they are not only considered relics associated with the lives of monastics but also sacred items passed down through generations. Robes and bowls are regarded as personal relics — one of the three types of relics connected to true cultivators: physical relics, personal relics, and Dharma relics.
The Robe is the everyday garment worn by Buddhist monks and nuns. It is brown, simply made, without elaborate patterns — representing purity, compassion, and detachment from material desires.
The robe extends from the collar to about 25 cm below the knees. It consists of two front and back panels. The front panel is split into two flaps vertically. The back panel is also divided into two sections, sewn together to form a long central seam known as the song ao (robe spine). The sleeves are wide and shaped like an arc.
In the “Buddhist Heritage of Northern Vietnam” exhibition at the VESAK 2025 Celebration, the yellow áo tràng of Venerable Thich Mat Ung is currently on display.
