Parrot Sculpture
Date: The Revival Le dynasty, 17th–18th century
Description: Wooden material, length 54 cm.
Origin: Nam Dinh, Vietnam.
Explanation: The depiction of the Buddha’s birth worshiped in Northern Vietnamese pagodas is commonly created in the form of two components: the statue of Thich Ca and the Nine Dragons Altar. In this depiction, the statue of Thich Ca is sculpted as a young boy standing upright on a lotus pedestal, bare-chested, wearing a short skirt (loincloth), with one hand pointing to the sky and the other pointing to the earth. His face is full and round, his eyes gently closed, radiating serenity and tranquility. The entire small statue is placed within the Nine Dragons Altar, where nine dragons are shown spraying water to bathe him at the moment of his birth (Cuu Long Phun Thuy).

According to legend, at the time of the Buddha’s birth, nine great dragons appeared in the sky, spraying two streams of cold and warm water to pay homage to the future Buddha, while also cooling the bodies of the newborn and his mother. He then took seven steps, with a lotus flower blooming under each step. At the seventh step, he raised his right hand pointing to the sky and his left hand pointing to the earth, and proclaimed: “In the heavens above and on the earth below, I alone am the honored one,” implying that throughout the three realms, only the true self — the enlightened nature — is supreme.

Sculpture de Perroquet
Période : Dynastie Lê restaurée, XVIIᵉ–XVIIIᵉ siècle
Caractéristiques : Matériau en bois, longueur 54 cm.
Origine : Nam Dinh, Vietnam.
