Birth of Buddha Statue
Date: Nguyễn dynasty, 19th–20th century
Description:The statue depicting the birth of the Buddha, which is worshipped in temples in northern Vietnam, is commonly represented in the form of a statue of Siddhartha Gautama (Thich Ca) and a nine-dragon throne. The statue of Siddhartha is sculpted as a young boy standing upright on a lotus throne, with his body bare and wearing a short skirt (kho). One hand points to the sky, while the other points to the earth. His face is round, with half-closed eyes, exuding a sense of serenity and calmness. The entire small statue is placed on a nine-dragon throne, with nine dragons spouting water to bathe him as he is born (Cuu long phun thuy).
According to legend, when the Buddha was born, nine great dragons appeared in the sky, spraying two streams of water, one cold and one warm, to show their respect for the future Buddha. This also helped cool the body of the Buddha and his mother. The Buddha then took seven steps, with a lotus flower blooming under each step. At the seventh step, he raised his right hand pointing to the sky, and his left hand pointing to the earth, declaring: “Thien thuong then ha, duy nga doc ton,” meaning that in all the three realms, only the true self – the enlightened essence – is supreme.
