Time of the Festival
Every year, two major ceremonies are held at Dinh Thay Thim. The first is the Tao Mo ceremony honoring Thay and Thim, held on the 5th day of the first lunar month. The second is the death anniversary ceremony of Thay and Thim, celebrated from the 14th to the 16th day of the ninth lunar month. Among these, the death anniversary festival is considered the principal celebration and attracts a large number of local residents and pilgrims from many regions.
The main festival days usually fall on the 15th and 16th days of the ninth lunar month. However, from about half a month before the festival, many pilgrims already arrive to offer incense and prayers, and even after the main days the number of visitors coming to the shrine remains considerable.
During this period, the town of La Gi becomes unusually lively and bustling. People from many provinces of central and southern Vietnam travel to attend the festival, from distant places such as Quang Tri and Thua Thien, as well as nearer localities including Ninh Thuan, Phan Thiet, and Long Khanh, creating a vibrant atmosphere of pilgrimage.
Location
The festival takes place at Dinh Thay Thim, located within the Bau Cai oil-forest, in Tam Tan hamlet, Tan Tien commune, La Gi town, Binh Thuan province.
The historical complex of Dinh Thay Thim consists of two main areas: the main shrine of Thay and Thim in Bau Cai forest, and the tomb area of Thay and Thim in Bau Thong forest, situated about 3 kilometers west of the shrine. The tomb complex includes the tomb of Thay, the tomb of Thim, the twin tomb of Bach Ho, and a worship hall dedicated to Thay and Thim.
Dinh Thay itself is a temple consisting of three buildings constructed in the traditional architectural style. The structure possesses a solemn and ancient appearance and is hidden beneath large old trees. The surrounding environment is quiet and serene, creating a sacred atmosphere for worshippers.
Originally, the shrine was built very simply with thatch and leaves. Over time, thanks to the contributions of local residents and pilgrims from many regions, the complex was gradually renovated and expanded into a more spacious and dignified structure.
Based on the Han–Nom inscription carved on a beam in the main hall reading “Ky Mao nien thap nhi nguyet nhi thap ngu nhat cau tao”, it can be determined that a major restoration took place on 25 December 1879, during the reign of King Tu Duc.
History
According to folk tradition, Thay and Thim were a married couple of Daoist practitioners who possessed both talent and virtue. They were known for their compassion, frequently helping the poor and treating illnesses among the local population.
Some documents state that Thay was born during the time of Nguyen Phuc Anh (later King Gia Long) in La Qua village, Dien Ban prefecture, Quang Nam province, while Thim was born in Yen Ne village in the same region. As a young man, Thay diligently pursued scholarly studies, but his attempts in the imperial examinations were unsuccessful despite repeated efforts. Disappointed by his lack of success in the official career path, he abandoned the examination route and instead devoted himself to spiritual cultivation in order to help society.
During his time in Quang Nam, Thay used his knowledge to assist the people by treating illnesses and encouraging them to live according to moral principles. However, a later incident led to Thay being accused by the royal court and sentenced to Tam Ban Trieu Dien during the reign of King Tu Duc.
According to legend, before the assembled villagers and royal officials, Thay and Thim transformed a red silk cloth into a red dragon and flew southward to escape persecution. When they arrived at the region of Tam Tan (present-day La Gi town), they found the landscape favorable and decided to settle there.
In this new place, Thay and Thim continued helping the local people by curing illnesses, distributing medicinal herbs, providing food relief during crop failures, and advising villagers to perform good deeds and avoid wrongdoing. Because of these contributions, they were highly respected by the local population.
To avoid attracting the attention of the authorities, the couple later retreated into the forest and lived in seclusion in a small thatched hut. According to oral accounts, Thay possessed the ability to tame wild animals, and various forest creatures were said to gather peacefully around their dwelling.
When Thay and Thim eventually passed away in their hut deep in the forest, villagers came to arrange their burial. Legend recounts that when people arrived, they saw elephants and other animals standing around in mourning, and that two coffins had mysteriously already been prepared.
The villagers buried Thay and Thim at Ban Thong. Since then, the community has commemorated them twice each year: on the 5th day of the first lunar month for the tomb-visiting ceremony and on the 15th day of the ninth lunar month for their death anniversary.
In gratitude for their virtue and contributions, the residents of Tam Tan built a shrine to worship them. According to popular belief, after their passing Thay continued to manifest spiritually to protect the villagers and ensure their prosperity.
Later, when King Tu Duc heard of the story, he sent an envoy to Tam Tan to investigate. After learning the full account, the king admired the virtue of the couple, annulled the former accusation, and conferred official titles upon them: Chi Duc Tien Sinh for Thay and Chi Duc Nuong Nuong for Thim.
Ritual Section
Before the festival begins, the Heritage Management Board meets to plan the organization of the event, mobilize community resources, and appoint the Ritual Committee responsible for conducting the ceremonies. Local residents also participate in cleaning and decorating the shrine and tomb areas, preparing offerings, and hanging ceremonial flags throughout the complex.
Traditionally, members of the Ritual Committee are individuals selected by the villagers for their good reputation, moral character, harmonious family life, and knowledge of ritual practices.
The offerings usually consist of local agricultural products, including a whole pig offered as a sacrificial animal.
The principal rituals include:
Nghinh Than Ceremony (14th day of the ninth lunar month):
A procession departs from the shrine to the tomb area to invite the spirits of Thay and Thim back to the shrine. The procession includes flower vehicles, ceremonial flags, the palanquin carrying royal decrees, drums and gongs, ritual music ensembles, lion–dragon dance teams, and large numbers of villagers and visitors.
Nhap Dien An Vi Ceremony:
After the procession returns, the Ritual Committee conducts the ritual installation of incense urns and royal decrees in the main sanctuary.
Offering of Cake Towers (morning of the 15th day):
Seven branches of the local Hoi Tam Quy association prepare seven multi-tiered towers of ceremonial cakes as offerings to Thay and Thim. After the ceremony, the cakes are distributed to villagers and visitors as blessed offerings.
Cung Ngo Ceremony:
A vegetarian offering ritual conducted in the main hall and at the altar of the Tien Hien (founding ancestors).
Thinh Sanh Ritual (morning of the 16th day):
A ritual offering of a live pig as a sacrificial act expressing gratitude to the deities and praying for protection for the village.
Tien Hien Worship Ceremony:
A ceremony honoring the ancestors who first settled and developed the land.
Chanh Te Ceremony:
The most important ritual of the festival, conducted in the main sanctuary and the Vo Ca hall.
Throughout the ceremonies, villagers and pilgrims continuously come to offer incense, pray, and seek divination sticks.
Festival Activities
Alongside the solemn rituals, the festival also includes numerous cultural performances, sporting events, and traditional folk games.
Typical activities include:
Human chess competitions
Traditional cake-making contests
Fishing net weaving competitions
Basket-carrying races symbolizing going out to sea
Fish carrying contests
Tug-of-war
Cross-country running
Beach volleyball
Lion, unicorn, and dragon dance performances
Exhibitions illustrating the legend of Thay and Thim
Festival drum performances
Traditional artistic shows
These activities create a joyful atmosphere, strengthen community bonds, and enrich the cultural life of local residents.
Recognition
Because of its distinctive cultural and spiritual values, the Dinh Thay Thim Festival was officially included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, according to Decision No. 62/QD-BVHTTDL dated 12 January 2022.

Periode d’organisation
Chaque village prepare un bateau long d’environ 7 metres.
