Time of Organization

Annually on the 30th day of the First Lunar Month

Location

Da Quan Pagoda (also known as Vien Minh Pagoda), Hong Viet commune, Hoa An district, Cao Bang province

History and Relics

Da Quan Pagoda, also called Vien Minh Pagoda, is believed to have originated during the Ly dynasty. An important piece of evidence is a pair of parallel sentences (couplets) still preserved in the pagoda:

“Vien Minh thắng tích hưng tiền Ly /
Da Quan thần chung chú Hậu Le”

which may be translated as:
“The renowned scenic site of Vien Minh was established in the Ly dynasty;
the sacred bell of Da Quan was cast in the Later Le period.”

This couplet not only holds literary value but also reflects folk traditions concerning the historical formation of the pagoda.

Vien Minh Pagoda is a complete architectural complex with a unified layout, beginning with a triple gate (tam quan) and ending with a bell tower. Its architectural and decorative art is rooted in the Buddhist philosophy of “form is emptiness, emptiness is form”, creating an atmosphere that is solemn yet serene. Facing the pagoda is Quan Trieu Temple, together forming a harmonious religious and belief space.

According to legends and historical records, Quan Trieu Temple was built during the Ly dynasty under the reign of King Ly Anh Tong (1138–1175). Due to historical upheavals, the temple once fell into ruin; it was restored during the period when the Mac dynasty established its base in Cao Bang, though today only traces of its original foundations remain. The historical figure worshiped there is Duong Tu Minh, an ethnic Tay leader from Ban Danh, Quan Trieu commune, Phu Luong prefecture (now Son Cam commune, Phu Luong district, Thai Nguyen province).

Duong Tu Minh was born into a family of local chieftains. He joined the Ly dynasty army at an early age and rendered distinguished service in major campaigns such as those at Ung Chau and along the Nhu Nguyet River. As a military official entrusted with guarding the frontier regions, he earned the respect of the people for his integrity and moral character. Through flexible policies and close cooperation with Tay–Nung local leaders, he contributed significantly to stabilizing the northern border adjacent to the Song dynasty. However, amid political turmoil at court, he was slandered by corrupt officials and exiled to the Duom mountain area.

From a formidable military commander, Duong Tu Minh came to be remembered in folklore as the “Old Man of Mount Duom,” yet his reputation and achievements endured in popular memory. After his death and that of his wife, Princess Thieu Dung, the court ordered the construction of temples in his honor and posthumously conferred upon him the title of a middle-ranked tutelary deity. In Cao Bang, Quan Trieu Temple was established in Xuan Linh commune, Thach Lam chau (now Hung Dao commune, Cao Bang city), with honorific inscriptions praising his merits in supporting the state and safeguarding the frontier.

Vien Minh Pagoda is one of the three oldest pagodas in Cao Bang province. Its historical value is clearly evidenced by the pair of bells still preserved there. In 1993, the bells were highly appraised for their artistic and sculptural quality; in 2016, they were officially recognized as National Treasures. The inscription on the bells indicates that they were cast in the year Can Thong Tan Hoi (1611), affirming Vien Minh Pagoda as an “ancient renowned Buddhist site.”

The inscription expresses the author’s pride in the land of Cao Bang—a place of refined scenery, endowed with pagodas, temples, palaces, and the daily resonance of temple bells. At the same time, it highlights the prominent role of the Mac dynasty, suggesting that the bells were cast during the period when the Mac controlled Cao Bang and designated it as their political center. At that time, both the pagoda and the temple functioned as national religious institutions, receiving substantial investment of material and financial resources.

The larger bell stands 1.75 meters high with a mouth diameter of 1.07 meters, while the smaller bell is 1.55 meters high with a mouth diameter of 0.95 meters. Both are cast in bronze alloy and have darkened with age. The larger bell has lost one dragon foot on its suspension handle, while the smaller bell has a hole in its body, which, according to oral tradition, was made to reduce excessive resonance. Both bells possess a solid, well-balanced form; the dragons decorating them have stout bodies, long crests, short horns, and exhibit a rustic, vigorous, and unpretentious sculptural style.

The Da Quan relic complex comprises three ranked tangible cultural heritages: Vien Minh Pagoda and Quan Trieu Temple (both designated as provincial-level historical and cultural relics in 2008), and the pair of “Sacred Bells” (Than Chung), which were recognized as National Treasures in 2016.

Overall, the system of pagodas and temples, together with the architectural and sculptural art found here, vividly reflects the religious and spiritual life of Cao Bang’s inhabitants since ancient times. Over many centuries, these monuments have preserved distinctive cultural and religious imprints, carefully safeguarded by the local community, thereby honoring the wisdom and craftsmanship of earlier generations and enriching the cultural identity of the mountainous region of Cao Bang.

Da Quan Pagoda Festival

The Da Quan Pagoda Festival is held annually on the 30th day of the First Lunar Month at Da Quan (Vien Minh) Pagoda, Hung Dao commune, Cao Bang city. It is one of the most representative traditional festivals of the locality, closely associated with Buddhist worship and the veneration of local deities. The festival attracts large numbers of local residents as well as visitors from other regions. It is not only an occasion to pray for peace and blessings at the beginning of the year, but also an expression of the moral principle of gratitude toward ancestors and deities who have protected the frontier land.

The ritual section is organized in a solemn manner, combining elements of folk belief with Buddhist ceremonies. It begins with the opening ritual, usually conducted early in the morning in a sacred and tranquil atmosphere. Representatives of local authorities, village elders, Buddhist clergy, and community members perform the ceremony of reporting to the deities and seeking permission to open the festival, praying for national peace, favorable weather, prosperity, and well-being for the people.

This is followed by the incense-offering ceremony in the main sanctuary of Vien Minh Pagoda. The altar is respectfully arranged with fresh flowers, vegetarian offerings, betel and areca, and traditional cakes and fruits. Delegations and local residents take turns offering incense, paying homage to the Buddha, and praying for family peace, successful livelihoods, and abundant harvests. During the ritual, the sacred bells of Da Quan Pagoda—recognized as National Treasures—are struck, producing deep, resonant sounds that echo through the surrounding mountains and forests, creating a profoundly contemplative spiritual atmosphere.

Alongside the incense-offering rites at the pagoda are ceremonies commemorating and honoring local deities and ancestors, associated with the worship traditions of Quan Trieu Temple. These rites express gratitude toward Duong Tu Minh—the frontier-defending hero of the Ly dynasty—and other predecessors who contributed to village establishment and national defense. The offerings are carefully prepared and symbolically reflect the agricultural culture and spiritual life of the local community.

The entire ritual section is conducted in an atmosphere of solemnity and reverence, clearly reflecting the long-standing belief system of Cao Bang’s inhabitants, where Buddhism harmoniously intertwines with indigenous deity worship.

Following the ritual section is the festive section, which unfolds in a lively and joyful atmosphere, creating opportunities for community cultural exchange. It opens with traditional folk art performances such as Then singing accompanied by the dan tinh (lute) of the Tay and Nung people. The performances praise the homeland, the nation, Buddhist teachings, and convey wishes for peace and happiness in the new year. The smooth, profound melodies of Then singing blend with the resonant sound of the dan tinh, forming the distinctive character of the Da Quan Pagoda Festival.

In addition, lion and dragon dances are performed, symbolizing the expulsion of negative forces and the welcoming of auspicious energy for the new year. The festival atmosphere becomes vibrant and animated, drawing enthusiastic participation and encouragement from both locals and visitors.

The festive section also features a variety of traditional folk games, including:

  • Nem con (cloth-ball throwing), symbolizing good fortune, fertility, and abundance;
  • Tug of war, representing community solidarity;
  • Stick pushing, spinning top games, blindfolded goat catching, fostering joy and intergenerational bonding;
  • In some years, Then singing and dan tinh competitions and grassroots cultural exchanges among villages.

Moreover, the festival grounds host activities introducing local agricultural products, traditional cuisine, and folk handicrafts, contributing to the promotion of the cultural image and everyday life of Cao Bang’s ethnic communities.

In general, the Da Quan Pagoda Festival represents a harmonious combination of the sacred solemnity of ritual practices and the joyful, communal spirit of festive activities. The festival not only meets spiritual needs at the beginning of the year, but also contributes to preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, enriching the spiritual life of the people, and creating a distinctive cultural highlight within the festival landscape of the Cao Bang highlands.

Fete de la Pagode Da Quan

Periode d’organisation

« Vien Minh thang tich hung tien Ly / Da Quan than chung chu Hau Le »,

– le lancer de balle (nem con), symbole de chance et de prosperite ;
– le tir a la corde, representant la cohesion communautaire ;
– la lutte au baton, le jeu de la toupie et le jeu du colin-maillard, favorisant la convivialite intergenerationnelle ;

  • 抛绣球:寓意祈福纳祥、繁衍兴盛;
  • 拔河:象征社区团结;
  • 推杆、打陀螺、蒙眼捉羊等活动,营造轻松欢乐的氛围,促进代际交流;
