Lễ hội được tổ chức tại Đền Cuông, thuộc xã Diễn An, huyện Diễn Châu, tỉnh Nghệ An.

Time of Organization
The Cuong Temple Festival is held annually on the 15th day of the second lunar month. This is a springtime period, when the weather is warm and pleasant, and also an occasion for local residents and pilgrims from many places to come and offer incense in commemoration of the merits of An Duong Vuong.
On the main festival day, from early morning, large numbers of local people and visitors from various regions gather at the temple to attend the ceremony, pray for blessings, prosperity, and peace. In recent years, the number of participants has continued to increase, sometimes reaching tens of thousands, making the road leading to the temple and the area at the foot of the mountain constantly crowded and bustling.
Location
The festival takes place at Cuong Temple, located in Dien An Commune, Dien Chau District, Nghe An Province.
The temple lies halfway up Mo Da Mountain, close to National Highway 1A. This is a location with particularly striking scenery: behind the mountain stretches the vast sea, with waves gently crashing day and night. Each morning, the sun rises from the sea, its light spreading across the mountains, forests, and water, creating a landscape that is both majestic and serene.
From the highway, visitors can see the temple’s tall three-entrance gate (Tam Quan). Its three-tiered structure, covered with moss and timeworn traces, is intertwined with banyan trees growing from cracks in the stone, their roots clinging and extending upward to the highest levels, adding to the temple’s ancient and sacred atmosphere.
Inside the temple, many architectural elements have been restored, yet the original character is preserved through large wooden pillars, intricate dragon and phoenix carvings, and parallel sentences in Chinese characters left by past mandarins and scholars to express their reverence for An Duong Vuong.
History
The Cuong Temple Festival is held to commemorate the contributions of An Duong Vuong, the king who founded the ancient state of Au Lac in Vietnamese legend and history.
According to legend, after the fall of Co Loa Citadel, An Duong Vuong fled with Princess My Chau to escape enemy forces. Upon reaching the region of Dien Chau, he realized that My Chau had unknowingly revealed the secret of the magic crossbow, leading to the country’s downfall.
In grief and despair, the king executed his daughter and then followed the Golden Turtle (Kim Quy) toward the sea. This story blends historical elements with myth, and over time has become deeply embedded in the collective memory and spiritual beliefs of the people.
Cuong Temple was built to honor this king. Over many centuries, it has remained a place where people come to express their respect and devotion.
In 1874, Pham Huy Luong, a laureate from Nghe An, wrote in a stele inscription at the temple:
“This is sacred land, and thus faith arises from the people; it cannot be forbidden.”
This statement reflects the long-standing belief that this place is spiritually significant, attracting large numbers of visitors for worship.
Rituals (Ceremonial Part)
The ceremonial part of the Cuong Temple Festival mainly consists of offerings and rituals dedicated to the deity, expressing remembrance and gratitude to An Duong Vuong.
On the festival day, rituals are conducted in a solemn and respectful manner. People and pilgrims come to offer incense at the king’s altar, praying for a peaceful, prosperous, and fortunate year ahead.
Compared to the festival at Co Loa, which includes various ceremonies such as processions and elaborate offerings, the Cuong Temple Festival is simpler, focusing primarily on the worship ritual.
However, due to the deep devotion of the people, the number of worshippers is still very large. Many must make their way up from the foot of the mountain through dense crowds just to reach the temple and offer incense.
Festive Activities (Entertainment Part)
After the ceremonial rites, the festival continues with various traditional cultural activities.
During the festival days, visitors can enjoy folk performances such as tuong (classical opera) and cheo (traditional folk theater). There are also activities like releasing flower lanterns, creating an atmosphere that is both solemn and lively.
In addition, in the cultural life of the people of Nghe An, there exists a vibrant folk game known as vat cu (ball wrestling). According to elderly residents in the midland region of Nghe An, this game dates back to the early 15th century. It was originally used to select strong young men to join the army of General Phan Dan, a military leader under King Le Thai To.
The cu ball is made from a large banana root. The root is dug up, shaped into a round ball about 30 cm in diameter and weighing 5–7 kg. It is then boiled and sun-dried to make it flexible and resistant to cracking during play.
The playing field is typically a sandy area about 50 meters long and 25 meters wide. There are three forms of the game:
Cu gon: two teams compete to seize the ball placed in the center and bring it into the opponent’s basket.
Cu day: the ball is buried in the sand; teams dig it up and push against each other to gain possession.
Cu nuoc: played on waterlogged sandy ground near a river, where players wade through water while competing for the heavy ball.
Participants are usually bare-chested and wear loincloths, with each team distinguished by different colors. The game is intense but not violent, highlighting community spirit, unity, and physical strength.
At the end of the match, the team that successfully brings the ball into the opponent’s goal more times wins. The prize is modest, mainly representing honor and the joy of participation.

Periode d’organisation
Lieu
