Background and Life
Prince Cẩm Giang Sùng was the eldest son of Prince Kiến Tân and the elder brother of Emperor Lê Tương Dực. He belonged to the direct royal lineage of Emperor Lê Thánh Tông and was born into a family of high status within the Lê imperial clan. However, his life became closely associated with the violent political upheavals of the Early Lê dynasty in the early sixteenth century, when conflicts within the royal family grew increasingly intense.
Toward the end of Lê Uy Mục’s reign, during approximately the Đoan Khánh era (1505–1509), Emperor Uy Mục ordered the killing of many members of the imperial clan. Under these circumstances, Sùng’s younger brother Oanh, later Emperor Lê Tương Dực, was forced to leave the capital and raise an army against Uy Mục.
When Lê Tương Dực reached Tây Đô, the situation was so urgent that he had no time to inform Prince Cẩm Giang Sùng. In order to gather forces and attract followers, Tương Dực falsely claimed that Prince Cẩm Giang was present in his army and had a banner bearing the words “Prince Cẩm Giang” erected as a means of rallying supporters.
This false claim unintentionally placed Sùng in grave danger. When Emperor Uy Mục learned that Prince Cẩm Giang was supposedly involved with the forces opposing him, he ordered Sùng’s arrest and execution. Thus, Sùng’s death did not result from his direct participation in his younger brother’s uprising, but from Lê Tương Dực’s use of his name to mobilize support.
This detail illustrates the severity of the struggle within the imperial clan at that time: merely being suspected of involvement with an opposing force could be enough for a member of the royal family to become a target for execution.
Prince Cẩm Giang Sùng had two sons. His eldest son later ascended the throne with the temple name Chiêu Tông, becoming Emperor Lê Chiêu Tông. His second son was Cung Hoàng, later Emperor Lê Cung Hoàng. Thus, although Prince Cẩm Giang himself never ascended the throne and was killed during the political turmoil at the end of Lê Uy Mục’s reign, both of his sons later became emperors of the Lê dynasty.
Posthumous Honors and Worship
After Lê Tương Dực ascended the throne, he deeply mourned the elder brother who had been killed during the preceding turmoil. The emperor posthumously conferred upon Prince Cẩm Giang Sùng the title Trang Định Đại vương and granted him generous posthumous honors.
This posthumous elevation both expressed remembrance for his deceased elder brother and restored the status of an important member of the imperial clan after the purges carried out under Lê Uy Mục.
When Sùng’s eldest son Lê Chiêu Tông later ascended the throne, Sùng received an even higher posthumous elevation. He was posthumously honored as Minh Tông Triết Hoàng đế and was enshrined in the Imperial Ancestral Temple.
Thus, from a prince who had been killed during political upheaval, Prince Cẩm Giang Sùng was subsequently restored to his position within the imperial clan and became a figure posthumously exalted by his own descendants after they ascended the throne.

Cẩm Giang vương Sùng
