Chiêu Hiếu Đại Vương (? – ?)

Chiêu Hiếu Đại Vương (? – ?)

Background and Life

Prince Chiêu Hiếu, whose personal name was Học, was a son of Emperor Tuyên Tổ. Historical sources do not clearly record his year of birth or his birth order among Tuyên Tổ’s children. Tuyên Tổ died while his children were still young, and Học took responsibility for raising, caring for, and educating his younger siblings.

He was by nature gentle but resolute, and he was also well versed in military strategy. Thus, he not only fulfilled the role of an elder brother within the family but also personally taught military texts to his younger brother Lê Lợi, who would later become Emperor Lê Thái Tổ.

The fact that Học taught military texts to Lê Lợi shows that he possessed military knowledge and exercised a certain influence on his younger brother’s development. However, Học died before Lê Lợi raised the banner of revolt. He therefore did not directly participate in the Lam Sơn uprising and did not live to witness his younger brother’s accession to the imperial throne.

Học’s wife was Trần Thị Ngọc Duẩn, but she died at a young age. The couple had a son named Thạch, who later became the renowned meritorious official Lê Thạch.

Death and Worship

Học died before Lê Lợi launched the uprising and was buried to the northwest of the Lam Sơn mausoleum. After Lê Lợi ascended the throne, the emperor posthumously conferred upon him the title Chiêu Hiếu Đại vương and incorporated him into the royal system of ancestral worship.

This posthumous honor both established Học’s status within the imperial family and expressed recognition of his contributions in raising and educating his younger siblings, especially Lê Lợi during his early years.

His wife, Trần Thị Ngọc Duẩn, was also posthumously granted the title Từ Thận Thái phi. She was originally buried at Bái Đô settlement in Lôi Dương District. Later, a shrine dedicated to her was established at Tây Thất in Tây Kinh, in an area adjoining the shrine of Prince Chiêu Hiếu.

Thus, after the establishment of the Lê dynasty, both Học and his wife received posthumous honors and designated places of worship, becoming part of the commemorative sacred landscape devoted to the earlier generation of the Lê royal family.
