Đến mùa đông năm Tân Sửu (1421), quân Minh do Trần Trí chỉ huy tiến đánh Ba Lẫm, ải Kình Lộng.

Background
Lê Thạch, a native of Lam Sơn in Thọ Xuân District, Thanh Hóa, was one of the meritorious officials who rendered service from the earliest stage of the Lam Sơn uprising. He was the son of Lê Học, the eldest brother of Lê Lợi, which made him Lê Lợi’s nephew and the eldest grandson in the direct line of Lê Khoáng. This kinship placed Lê Thạch in a special position within the Lê family, but what is even more noteworthy was his close association with Lê Lợi from childhood.
When Lê Lợi was still young, he was raised and educated by Lê Học. After Lê Học died, Lê Lợi in turn raised Lê Thạch and treated him as his own son. This relationship partly explains the trust Lê Lợi placed in Lê Thạch during the early years of the uprising. However, viewing Lê Thạch merely as Lê Lợi’s nephew is insufficient to explain his position in the Lam Sơn movement. Historical sources also place particular emphasis on his personal qualities: “he was benevolent by nature, fond of reading, surpassed others in courage and strategy, and was skilled at caring for his soldiers.” These qualities combined virtue, learning, military ability, and the capacity to win the loyalty of troops, creating the image of a commander who was both capable of leading armies and trusted by his men.
Historical Context
After the defeat of the Hồ dynasty, Đại Việt was placed under Ming rule, and anti-Ming uprisings broke out in many regions. In this context, Lam Sơn became one of the centers for gathering resistance forces under the leadership of Lê Lợi.
In 1418, Lê Lợi raised the banner of revolt at Lam Sơn. The war lasted for many years, during which the insurgent forces were repeatedly surrounded and pursued by the Ming army and were forced to change their areas of operation on numerous occasions. The Lam Sơn forces were initially limited in strength, while their opponent held advantages in manpower and equipment. Therefore, organizing the forces, developing a corps of commanders, and selecting those capable of directly leading troops in battle played a particularly important role.
Lê Thạch was one of the commanders whom Lê Lợi trusted. He was frequently assigned to the vanguard and directly led troops against the enemy.
Career
Lê Thạch joined the Lam Sơn uprising from its earliest stage and quickly became one of the principal commanders of the insurgent army. According to the Đại Việt thông sử, Lê Lợi frequently appointed him to lead the vanguard, and wherever he fought, he achieved victory. During the early years of the uprising, when the insurgents had to withstand repeated Ming offensives, the role of vanguard commanders was especially important, as they were the forces directly responsible for breaking the enemy’s attacks and opening the way for the main army.
In the year Mậu Tuất (1418), the Ming commander Mã Kỳ led troops to surround and attack Lê Lợi, forcing the insurgents to withdraw to Lạc Thủy, where they set an ambush and waited for the enemy. When the Ming army advanced, Lê Thạch, together with Đinh Bồ, Lê Lý, and Lê Ngân, charged forward to attack. They killed more than 3,000 enemy soldiers and captured a large amount of spoils. This battle clearly demonstrated Lê Thạch’s particular strength: personally leading assault troops and striking swiftly and forcefully at the enemy formation.
Afterward, he continued to follow Lê Lợi to Mường Thú, attacked the Nga Lạc camp, and then advanced to the A Đả camp. In the Battle of Mỹ Canh, the insurgents captured the Ming commander Nguyễn Sao and killed more than 300 enemy soldiers. These successive victories helped Lê Thạch establish his position among the commanders of the Lam Sơn army.
By the winter of the year Tân Sửu (1421), Ming forces under Trần Trí advanced against Ba Lẫm and the Kình Lộng Pass. Lê Lợi arranged an ambush at Úng Ải. When the Ming army entered the battlefield, Lê Thạch was assigned to lead the troops at the front and drove the enemy back. Lê Quý Đôn’s Đại Việt thông sử remarks that he frequently served as the vanguard and had rendered the greatest service. These military achievements were reflected in his appointment as Deputy Commander of the Thiết Đột army and his granting of the title Lương Nghĩa hầu.
Family
Lê Thạch came from the senior branch of Lê Lợi’s family.
– Father: Lê Học, the eldest brother of Emperor Lê Thái Tổ.
– Uncle: Lê Thái Tổ.
– Grandfather: Lê Khoáng.
Final Years and Worship
At the end of 1421, Lê Thạch was killed in battle against the Lao forces. According to the Đại Việt thông sử, the Lao army, numbering approximately 30,000 troops, initially pretended to come to the aid of the insurgents before suddenly launching a surprise attack on Lê Lợi’s camp. Lê Lợi personally supervised the fighting, defeated the enemy, and pursued them for four days and nights all the way to their stronghold. The Lao chieftain Man Sát requested peace, but Lê Lợi suspected that this might be a deceptive surrender and therefore refused.
After several days of fighting, the commanders believed that the troops were exhausted and proposed a temporary rest. Lê Thạch did not follow this advice and continued to lead his forces in an attack. During the fighting, he was struck by a concealed enemy arrow and killed in battle. His death brought to an end the life of a commander who had fought for only a few years but had already left a clear mark on the Lam Sơn uprising.
Lê Lợi deeply mourned Lê Thạch’s death. After the uprising achieved complete victory and the Lê dynasty was established, in the first year of the Thuận Thiên era (1428), when the court assessed the merits of its generals and soldiers, Lê Thạch was posthumously appointed Nhập nội Kiểm hiệu Thái úy Bình chương quân quốc trọng sự and granted the title Trung Vũ Đại vương, with orders that he be jointly worshipped in the royal ancestral temple.
Later rulers continued to confer additional ranks, titles, and posthumous honors upon him:
– In the first year of the Đại Bảo era (1440), Lê Thái Tông further conferred upon him the title Lương quận Trung Vũ vương.
– In the first year of the Diên Ninh era (1454), Lê Nhân Tông further granted him the title Quận công Trung Dũng Anh Nghị Chân Hiến Đại vương.
– By the eighth year of the Hồng Đức era (1487), under the reign of Lê Thánh Tông, he was posthumously granted the title Lương Quốc công and the posthumous title Chân Hiến Túc vương.
Assessment
Lê Thạch represents a special case among the Lam Sơn meritorious officials. He came from Lê Lợi’s own lineage and was personally raised by Lê Lợi from childhood. Historical sources provide a relatively comprehensive assessment of him, describing him as benevolent, eager to learn, courageous and strategically capable, and attentive to the welfare of his soldiers. These qualities enabled him both to become a military commander capable of direct combat and to earn the confidence of the insurgent ranks.
Lê Thạch’s most notable contribution was his role as a vanguard commander. From the earliest battles at Lạc Thủy to the fighting of 1421, he was repeatedly entrusted with leading troops at the front and directly breaking the enemy’s offensive momentum. His achievements were therefore closely associated with the most difficult years of the uprising, when the Lam Sơn forces were still continuously resisting Ming pursuit and expanding their area of operations. The title Lương Nghĩa hầu, granted to him during his lifetime, represented recognition of these contributions.
Lê Thạch was killed after continuing to lead an attack following several days of fighting. Before this, the other commanders had proposed that the troops be allowed to rest, but Lê Thạch did not agree. From the perspective of the demands of a prolonged war, this decision may reveal a degree of impetuosity. His death before he was able to witness the complete victory of the uprising left deep regret for Lê Lợi and the Lam Sơn forces.

Lam Sơn
- 父亲:Lê Học(Lê Thái Tổ Lê Lợi 的长兄)
Lê Thái Tổ
Lê Khoáng
Lê Thạch
Lê Thạch
