Bà sinh hoàng tử Lê Nguyên Long năm 1423.
Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần qua đời ngày 24 tháng 3 năm 1425 tại Nghệ An.

Background
Empress Dowager Cung Từ Tuyên Mục Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần¹ (范氏玉陳, 1386–1425), also known as Consort Phạm Hiền, was a native of Quần Lai Commune, Lôi Dương District, in what is now Thọ Xuân District, Thanh Hóa Province. She was the younger sister of Phạm Vận, a figure who held a position within the administrative apparatus of the Lam Sơn insurgent forces.
Relatively little information survives concerning her background before she joined Lê Lợi. Existing records focus primarily on the years during which she accompanied him throughout the Lam Sơn uprising, particularly the birth of Prince Lê Nguyên Long and her sacrifice in Nghệ An in 1425.
Life
Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần lived with Lê Lợi during the early years of the Lam Sơn uprising, when the war against the Ming was still extremely intense. At that time, the insurgent forces had to move constantly, and Lê Lợi had no fixed residence. Life was exceptionally difficult. According to historical sources, she nevertheless remained at Lê Lợi’s side and shared with him those years of hardship.
In the year Quý Mão (1423), while the uprising was still underway, she gave birth to Prince Lê Nguyên Long. He would later become Emperor Lê Thái Tông. When Lê Nguyên Long was born, the war between the Lam Sơn forces and the Ming army had not yet ended, and mother and son therefore continued to live under wartime conditions and had to move together with the insurgent army.
In the year Ất Tỵ (1425), Lê Lợi advanced into Nghệ An and laid siege to the citadel. When he reached Trào Khẩu Citadel in Hưng Nguyên, where there was a temple dedicated to the deity Phổ Hộ, Lê Lợi, according to the Đại Việt thông sử, dreamed that a deity appeared before him. The deity asked Lê Lợi to give him one of his consorts and promised in return to assist the insurgent army in defeating the Ming and completing its great cause.
After waking, Lê Lợi related the dream to his wives and said that if any one of them was willing to become the deity’s wife, then after he had won the realm, he would make her son the Son of Heaven.
The proposal caused all the women present to remain silent. Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần alone voluntarily knelt down and accepted. She said that if Lê Lợi kept his promise, she was willing to offer herself to the deity, but that once his cause had succeeded and the country had been pacified, she asked him not to forget her son. At that time, Lê Nguyên Long was only about three years old. Lê Lợi was deeply moved by her words, praised her while also grieving for her, and agreed to her request.
Lê Lợi then ordered preparations for a sacrifice to the deity. Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần entrusted Lê Nguyên Long to the care of attendants and personally took part in the ritual. She was used as the sacrificial offering to the deity and died on the twenty-fourth day of the third lunar month in 1425.
After Lê Lợi had pacified the country and ascended the imperial throne, he continued to remember his deceased wife. The king said that she deserved to become “the sovereign of all the spirits” of the country and that no one should act against her wishes. He ordered Lê Cố of Nhân Trầm cave to transport her coffin back to Thanh Hóa for burial.
When the funeral procession reached Thịnh Mỹ Commune, darkness had already fallen and there was not enough time to cross the river, so the procession had to stop for the night at the marketplace. According to the record, during that night termites pushed earth up from beneath the ground around the coffin, forming a large mound that became a tomb.
Those escorting the coffin considered the event extraordinary and returned to report it to the king. Lê Lợi believed that this was the deity fulfilling the promise made years earlier. He therefore decided to leave the coffin at that place and ordered the construction of Hiến Nhân Hall for her worship. At the same time, he had a shrine established at Lam Kinh and placed her spirit tablet there for worship.
From this point onward, the story of Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần did not end with the sacrifice of a wife, but became closely connected with the question of Lê Lợi’s succession. At that time, Lê Lợi had appointed Quận vương Lê Tư Tề, the son of Consort Trịnh Thần, as Regent and placed him in charge of court affairs. However, Lê Tư Tề was later said to have suffered from mental instability and to have committed a number of actions that displeased the king. Lê Lợi therefore had to reconsider the question of choosing his successor.
Under these circumstances, historical sources recount that one day at noon, while sleeping, Lê Lợi dreamed that Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần appeared and reproached him for having failed to honor what she had done. From the beginning of his campaign to suppress disorder, she had offered herself to the deity; now his cause had succeeded and the country had been pacified, yet she had still not received the king’s favor. Lê Lợi awoke deeply moved and remembered his earlier promise.
After this dream, Lê Lợi decided to designate Lê Nguyên Long as his legitimate son and successor to the throne. Thus, from being a young prince, Lê Nguyên Long became Lê Lợi’s heir. In 1433, Lê Lợi died, and Lê Nguyên Long ascended the throne as Emperor Lê Thái Tông.
Family
Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần was one of Lê Lợi’s wives before he ascended the throne. According to historical sources, during the uprising Lê Lợi had not formally established a principal wife, but had Consort Trịnh Thần, Consort Phạm Huệ, and Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần.
She gave birth to Prince Lê Nguyên Long in 1423. He is the only child of hers recorded in the historical sources and was also the figure who determined her position in the history of the Early Lê dynasty. Lê Nguyên Long was designated by Lê Lợi as his successor and ascended the throne in 1433, becoming Emperor Lê Thái Tông.
Her elder brother was Phạm Vận, who later held the office of Tri tả hữu ban and participated in the ceremony of posthumous elevation, bringing her spirit tablet into the Imperial Ancestral Temple. This detail indicates that Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần’s family continued to maintain ties with the court after her death.
Death and Worship
Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần died on the twenty-fourth day of the third lunar month in 1425 in Nghệ An. After Lê Lợi ascended the throne, her coffin was transported back to Thanh Hóa but stopped at Thịnh Mỹ Commune. According to the legend recorded in historical sources, termites raised the earth around the coffin and formed a tomb. Lê Lợi therefore believed that this was the place designated by the deity and decided to leave her there and construct Hiến Nhân Hall for her worship.
At Lam Kinh, Lê Lợi ordered the construction of a shrine and placed her spirit tablet there for ritual offerings. After Lê Nguyên Long ascended the throne, she was successively posthumously honored as Cung Từ Quốc thái mẫu in 1434 and then as Cung Từ Tuyên Mục Hoàng thái hậu in 1437, and she was incorporated into the system of worship at the Imperial Ancestral Temple.
The court ordered Phạm Vấn and Trần Thuấn Du to bring her new spirit tablet into the Imperial Ancestral Temple for accompanying worship, while a golden investiture document was issued conferring her honorific title. On the eighth day of the seventh lunar month of the same year, the court ordered Hữu bộc xạ Lê Nhữ Lãm to go to Lam Kinh and build a shrine for the Thái mẫu. In the twelfth lunar month, her spirit tablet was formally brought into the Imperial Ancestral Temple for accompanying worship.
In the second lunar month of the fourth year of the Thiệu Bình era (1437), Lê Thái Tông further posthumously honored his mother as Cung Từ Quang Mục Hoàng thái hậu. From a consort of Lê Lợi during the period of the uprising, Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần thus became an Empress Dowager officially worshipped within the sacred royal space of the Early Lê dynasty.
Today, a temple dedicated to Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần stands in her native Quần Lai. However, the precise location of her tomb has not yet been determined. Hypotheses concerning an ancient tomb beneath the area of the Chu River remain only assessments proposed by local researchers and are not supported by sufficient evidence to confirm that it is her burial place.
Assessment
Empress Dowager Cung Từ Tuyên Mục Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần occupies a noteworthy position in the early history of the Early Lê dynasty. Her life was closely associated with the early years of the Lam Sơn uprising and, in particular, with the birth of Lê Nguyên Long, who later became Emperor Lê Thái Tông.
From the story preserved in historical sources, she can be seen as a woman deeply attached to her son, willing to sacrifice herself and asking Lê Lợi not to forget the promise he had made to her.
However, the account of Phạm Thị Ngọc Trần also contains many elements colored by religious belief, such as the deity Phổ Hộ appearing in a dream, the promise between Lê Lợi and the deity, the dream concerning the succession, and the story of termites raising the earth to form a tomb. These elements also show how people of the past interpreted her death and connected her sacrifice with Lê Lợi’s cause as well as with Lê Nguyên Long’s accession to the throne.
Note
Many sources record her title as Cung Từ Quang Mục Hoàng Thái hậu, but Lê Quý Đôn’s Đại Việt thông sử records it as Cung Từ Tuyên Mục Hoàng Thái hậu.

À cette époque, Lê Nguyên Long n’avait qu’environ trois ans.
Note

Lê Lợi
1433年,Lê Lợi 去世以后,Lê Nguyên Long 即位,即 Lê Thái Tông 皇帝。
