“Đằng Giang tự cổ huyết do hồng.”

Background
Giang Văn Minh (1573-1638), courtesy name Quốc Hoa and sobriquet Văn Chung, was an eminent official, diplomat, and representative envoy of the Revival Lê dynasty. Later generations have remembered him as an upright and incorruptible official of profound learning, as well as a symbol of the spirit of preserving national dignity in diplomatic activity.
Giang Văn Minh was born in 1573 in Kẻ Mía village, Mông Phụ commune, Cam Giá canton, Phúc Lộc district, Quảng Oai prefecture, Sơn Tây town, now Mông Phụ village, Đường Lâm commune, Sơn Tây town, Hanoi. This was a land with a long tradition of learning and civil examinations, famous as the homeland of many historical figures. That rich cultural environment helped shape Giang Văn Minh’s character, will, and spirit of learning from childhood.
Giang Văn Minh was intelligent, diligent in study, and early revealed talent in literature as well as knowledge of Confucian learning. He grew up in the context of the Revival Lê period, when real power lay in the hands of the Trịnh lords, while the Lê court maintained legitimacy in name. This was a period when society gradually stabilized after decades of civil war between the Southern and Northern dynasties, and also a stage when the court placed emphasis on selecting talented people through the civil examination system in order to strengthen the state administrative apparatus.
Thanks to his profound learning and outstanding qualities, Giang Văn Minh gradually affirmed his position among the officials of the Lê court. Not only outstanding in political and diplomatic talent, he was also assessed by historians as upright, loyal, righteous, and always placing the interests of the nation above all else. These qualities laid the foundation for his official and diplomatic career, while also making the name Giang Văn Minh a symbol of patriotism, dignity, and courage among Đại Việt intellectuals in history.
Career
Passing the Examinations and Early Official Career
Giang Văn Minh was one of the representative Confucian intellectuals of the Revival Lê period. After many years of diligently studying the classics and histories, he took part in the Hội examination and brilliantly ranked first, then continued to sit for the Đình examination in the Mậu Thìn year, 1628, the 10th year of Vĩnh Tộ under King Lê Thần Tông. In this examination, no one passed as Trạng nguyên or Bảng nhãn, so Giang Văn Minh, with the rank of Thám hoa, was the highest-ranking successful candidate of the entire examination. This achievement not only affirmed his profound learning and outstanding talent but also placed his name among the prominent figures of Vietnamese civil examinations in the seventeenth century.
After passing the examinations, Giang Văn Minh was quickly employed by the court and successively held many important offices. In 1630, he was appointed Binh khoa Đô cấp sự trung, responsible for supervising matters related to the Ministry of War, participating in remonstrance, and inspecting the activities of officials in military affairs. In 1631, he was promoted to Thái bộc tự khanh, holding responsibility for managing an important court office. His successive appointment to these positions shows that he was an official of ability, integrity, and one who was deeply trusted by both the Lê king and the Trịnh lord’s residence.
Diplomacy with the Ming Dynasty
The peak of Giang Văn Minh’s career was associated with his diplomatic mission to the Ming dynasty at the end of 1637. On the 30th day of the 12th lunar month of the 3rd year of Dương Hòa, he was appointed Chief Envoy by the court, together with Thiêm đô ngự sử Nguyễn Duy Hiểu and four Deputy Envoys, Nguyễn Quang Minh, Trần Nghi, Nguyễn Bình, and Thân Khuê, leading the mission to the Ming court to carry out the customary requests for investiture and annual tribute in relations between the two countries.
The context of the mission took place during a complicated period in diplomatic relations between Đại Việt and the Ming dynasty. Although the Mạc house had already weakened and only remained entrenched in Cao Bằng, the Ming court still maintained a two-sided diplomatic policy by recognizing both the Revival Lê dynasty and the Mạc house in order to sustain division within Đại Việt. Therefore, one of Giang Văn Minh’s important tasks was to request that the Ming court officially recognize the legitimacy of the Lê dynasty and end its support for the Mạc.
In early 1638, the diplomatic delegation arrived in Yanjing, present-day Beijing, to have an audience with the Ming emperor. According to historical records, the negotiation process took place in a context where the Ming court still sought to delay the official investiture of the Lê dynasty on the grounds that precedents needed to be examined. Despite many difficulties, Giang Văn Minh still completed his diplomatic mission and defended the position and interests of the Đại Việt court.
The Anecdote of “Not Disgracing the King’s Mission”
Giang Văn Minh’s name has been widely transmitted in folk memory mainly thanks to the famous anecdote “Bất nhục quân mệnh,” meaning “not disgracing the king’s mission.”
According to legend, during the audience, Emperor Chongzhen of the Ming gave the first line of a parallel couplet:
“Đồng trụ chí kim đài dĩ lục”
“The bronze pillar to this day is still covered with green moss.”
This line referred to the bronze pillar of Ma Yuan after the suppression of the Trưng Sisters’ uprising, implying a reminder of the period of Northern domination and covertly expressing the mentality of a great power toward Đại Việt.
In response, Giang Văn Minh calmly replied:
“Đằng Giang tự cổ huyết do hồng.”
“The Bạch Đằng River from ancient times still runs red with blood.”
The answering line referred to the resounding victories of the Vietnamese people on the Bạch Đằng River, where northern invaders were defeated many times. Not only was the response correct in parallel structure, tone, and meaning, it also affirmed the will for independence, sovereignty, and the tradition of resisting foreign invasion of the Đại Việt people. For this reason, Giang Văn Minh has long been regarded as a symbol of Vietnamese diplomatic dignity and courage.
According to the anecdote, after this exchange, the Ming emperor became enraged, secretly ordered Giang Văn Minh killed, had his body embalmed with mercury, and sent it back to Đại Việt. When his coffin arrived in Thăng Long, King Lê Thần Tông and Lord Trịnh Tráng personally went out to receive it and posthumously granted him the office of Left Vice Minister of the Ministry of Works and the title Duke of Vinh. They also bestowed on him the famous praise:
“An envoy who does not disgrace the king’s mission may be called a hero for a thousand ages.”
In the king’s funeral oration, there was also the praise:
“Everyone lives, but to live as he did is truly worth living; everyone dies, but to die as he did is to remain alive even in death.”
These posthumous honors helped make the image of Giang Văn Minh a symbol of loyalty to the ruler, moral integrity, and an unyielding spirit in the history of Vietnamese diplomacy.
Although the anecdote “Bất nhục quân mệnh” is very famous and widely transmitted in folk tradition, many modern studies hold that this story is not confirmed by official histories. The anecdote appeared rather late, first in the Giang family genealogy compiled by the descendant Giang Văn Hiển in 1849, more than two centuries after Giang Văn Minh’s death. Notably, this genealogy also contains a chronological error when it records that the person who ordered his killing was Emperor Tianqi of the Ming, although that emperor had already died in 1627, before Giang Văn Minh’s diplomatic mission.
When compared with Vietnamese official histories such as Đại Việt sử ký tục biên and Khâm định Việt sử Thông giám cương mục, as well as Ming historical sources from China, none records Giang Văn Minh being executed or the exchange of parallel couplets described above. Therefore, historians today mainly regard this as a symbolic anecdote, reflecting the people’s admiration for the courage, dignity, and spirit of preserving national honor among Đại Việt envoys, rather than as a verified historical event.
Although its authenticity remains debated, Giang Văn Minh is still assessed as a talented diplomat, an incorruptible official, and a representative intellectual of the Revival Lê period. His image has gone beyond the framework of a historical figure to become a cultural symbol of patriotism, courage, and moral integrity among the Vietnamese people in diplomatic relations with northern dynasties.
Death and Worship
Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư, Khâm định Việt sử Thông giám cương mục, as well as Ming historical sources, record that Giang Văn Minh died while carrying out his mission in China in 1638, at about sixty-five years of age. After his death, the Lê court deeply mourned him and posthumously granted him the office of Left Vice Minister of the Ministry of Works and the title Duke of Vinh, recognizing his contributions to the court and the country.
To commemorate the merits and integrity of Thám hoa Giang Văn Minh, the people of his homeland built a family shrine in Mông Phụ village, Đường Lâm commune, Sơn Tây town, Hanoi. This place preserves many documents and artifacts connected with his life and career, and is also a site for commemorative activities, education in patriotic tradition, and national pride for later generations. With its special historical and cultural values, the Giang Văn Minh shrine has been classified by the State as a historical-cultural relic, becoming one of the representative relic sites of the Đường Lâm region.
Giang Văn Minh is not only worshiped in his homeland; his name is also remembered through the fact that many localities across the country have named streets after him as a tribute to the famous envoy known for his talent and dignity. Today, streets bearing the name Giang Văn Minh can be found in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Bắc Ninh, and Đà Nẵng, helping preserve the image of a representative eminent official in the history of Vietnamese diplomacy.
In folk cultural life, Giang Văn Minh is also honored by the people as a symbol of loyalty to the ruler, patriotism, and the courage of a Đại Việt envoy. Although many details about his mission and death still bear legendary elements, the image of the “envoy who did not disgrace the king’s mission” continues to be widely transmitted, becoming a source of inspiration for national dignity and self-respect in Vietnamese history.
Assessment and Evaluation
Giang Văn Minh was one of the representative eminent officials of the Revival Lê dynasty, outstanding in learning, politics, and diplomacy. From a man who ranked first in the 1628 examination with the title Thám hoa, he held many important offices at court before being entrusted with the responsibility of serving as Chief Envoy to the Ming dynasty. Being chosen for a diplomatic mission in the context of complicated relations between Đại Việt and the Ming dynasty shows that he was an official of profound learning, courage, and special trust from the court.
In the history of Vietnamese diplomacy, Giang Văn Minh is regarded as a model of a talented envoy who knew how to combine intellect, courage, and national self-respect while carrying out foreign affairs. Although many famous details of his mission, especially the story of his exchange with the Ming emperor and his sacrifice, are now identified by researchers as belonging mainly to the realm of folk anecdote, these legends still reflect later generations’ admiration for his uprightness, firmness, and spirit of placing national interests above all else. The image of the “envoy who did not disgrace the king’s mission” has therefore gone beyond the scope of a historical figure and become a cultural symbol of the dignity of Vietnamese intellectuals.
Giang Văn Minh’s life also shows the important role of Confucian intellectuals in defending national sovereignty and honor not only through weapons, but also through diplomatic talent and sharp reasoning. Although his time in office was not very long and many details of his life remain incompletely recorded, he still left a deep mark on national history as an incorruptible, devoted high official with a strong sense of responsibility toward the country.
Across many centuries, the name of Giang Văn Minh has continued to be respected and honored by the people. Shrines, streets bearing his name, and the transmission of folk anecdotes have helped affirm his position in history and in national memory. He was not only an outstanding diplomat of the Revival Lê dynasty but also a symbol of wisdom, courage, and patriotism, worthy of being recognized as one of the most representative envoys in Vietnamese history.

Origines
« Đằng Giang tự cổ huyết do hồng. »
