An táng

Background
Doan Quy phi, personal name Ngoc, was born in 1601 in Dien Chau village, Dong Yen chau, a riverside settlement along the Sai Thi Giang River (now the Thu Bon River), in present-day Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam province. In the past, the territory of Dong Yen village stretched from the Chiêm Son area to Cho Cui, encompassing many fertile alluvial lands along the river suitable for cultivation.
She was born into a powerful local aristocratic family in Chiem Son. She was the third daughter of Thach Quan cong Doan Cong Nhan and his secondary wife Vo Thi Thanh, and the younger sister of Quoc cuu Sam Oai hau Doan Cong Quang, head of the senior branch of the Doan clan in Duy Xuyen. Owing to their possession of extensive fertile riverside fields along the Thu Bon River and their development of mulberry cultivation and sericulture, the family of Doan Cong Nhan became wealthy and highly influential in the region.
Entering the Lord’s Palace
According to records in Dai Nam nhat thong chi, Doan Thi Ngoc was intelligent, dignified, graceful in appearance, and pure in virtue. A well-known anecdote relates that when she was only fifteen years old, while picking mulberry leaves by the river, she gazed at the moon and sang aloud. At that time, Lord Nguyen Phuc Nguyen was touring Quang Nam, accompanied by Crown Prince Nguyen Phuc Lan. During a nighttime stop to admire the moon at Dien Chau, the Nguyen lord heard her unusual singing voice and ordered an inquiry, learning that she was a daughter of the Doan family. She was then brought into the palace to serve and soon gained favor.
In 1635, Lord Nguyen Phuc Nguyen died, and Crown Prince Nguyen Phuc Lan ascended the throne as Lord Nguyen Phuc Lan. When he moved the lord’s residence from Phuoc Yen to Kim Long (Phu Xuan), he conferred upon Doan Thi Ngoc the title of Doan Quy phi, and at the same time granted her father Doan Cong Nhan the title Thach Quan cong.
Although living in the lord’s palace, Doan Quy phi remained deeply attached to the traditional occupation of her homeland. She actively encouraged mulberry cultivation, silkworm raising, silk reeling, and silk weaving, thereby contributing to the development of sericulture in Dang Trong. As a result, not only Quang Nam but also the capital Phu Xuan became important centers of silk production. Together with the prosperity of the Hoi An trading port, silk gradually became a major export commodity, expanding external trade. In remembrance of these contributions, the people of Dang Trong honored her as Ba Chua Tam Tang (Lady of Sericulture).
In her later years, at an unclear date, Doan Quy phi left the lord’s palace at Kim Long and returned to reside at the Thanh Chiem garrison in Quang Nam, living together with her descendants and relatives in her native land.
Doan Quy phi bore three sons, among whom Nguyen Phuc Vo and Nguyen Phuc Quynh both died young. Nguyen Phuc Tan, her second son, became Crown Prince and later ascended the throne as Thai Tong Hieu Triet Emperor. As for her youngest daughter, according to recollections of the elders of the Doan clan in Chiem Son village, Duy Trinh commune, Duy Xuyen district, she had various names but was commonly called Nguyen Phuc Ngoc Dung. She had a congenital disability, was married to a Chuong Co named Minh, and also died young.
When her son Thai Tong Emperor Phuc Tan ascended the position of Lord, she was honored as Quoc Thai phu nhan.
She died on the seventeenth day of the fifth month of the Tan Suu year, corresponding to July 12, at the Thanh Chiem garrison (now in Dien Phuong commune, Dien Ban town).
Burial
After Doan Quy phi passed away, Lord Hien Nguyen Phuc Tan had her buried at Go Coc Hung, in Mong Linh tong. This burial site was located not far from the tomb of Empress Mac Thi Giai—the principal wife of Lord Nguyen Phuc Nguyen—and near the grave of Princess Nguyen Phuc Ngoc Dung, forming an important royal burial complex of the Nguyen lords in the Duy Xuyen area.
To commemorate his mother’s merits, Lord Nguyen Phuc Tan ordered the construction of Vinh Dien Mausoleum in what is now Duy Trinh commune, Duy Xuyen district, and also established the Duc Ba ancestral shrine in Dong Giap village, Dong Yen chau, along the Sai Thi Giang River. In addition, he granted five mau of land as hereditary fields in Phu Trang village (now Quê Xuan commune, Quê Son district), the proceeds of which were to be used for incense offerings, maintenance of the mausoleum, and upkeep of the ancestral shrine. Responsibility for overseeing these matters was assigned to Doan Cong Quang, who at that time was granted the title Le Nghia hau and held the post of Tien Xung Bat doi Chanh doi truong.
In the Canh Thin year 1680, under the reign of Le Hy Tong, corresponding to the thirty-second year of Lord Nguyen Phuc Tan, a major flood occurred on the Sai Thi Giang River, causing severe erosion. The torrent split Dong Yen village in two, forming the later areas of Dong Yen Tay and Dong Yen Dong, and completely swept away and destroyed the Duc Ba ancestral shrine.
In 1744, when Lord Nguyen The Tong ascended the throne, the court posthumously conferred a temple name upon Emperor Than Tong Nguyen Phuc Lan. On this occasion, Doan Quy phi was also granted the posthumous title Trinh Thuc Tu Tinh Hue phi.
In the fifth year of Gia Long (1806), Emperor Gia Long posthumously elevated her to the rank of empress, granting her the full honorific title Trinh Thuc Tu Tinh Man Due Hue Kinh Hieu Chieu Empress. She was enshrined together with Emperor Than Tong Nguyen Phuc Lan at the Thai Mieu in Phu Xuan, with her altar placed on the right side, first rank.
In the memorial text presented for the posthumous elevation, the court emphasized the significance of honoring predecessors as a means of repaying merit and upholding moral principles. The text praised her as a woman of pure virtue, dignified appearance, and qualities befitting the yin and gentle moral order of a maternal exemplar, who contributed to nurturing blessings for the royal clan and the state. Thanks to such virtue, the Nguyen family’s enterprise was said to have endured and prospered. On this basis, the court solemnly presented the golden register, proclaimed her empress title, and enshrined her at the Thai Mieu in accordance with imperial ritual.
The Lady of Sericulture
The Lady of Sericulture of Dang Trong
Doan phu nhan wholeheartedly supported and encouraged the people of Dien Ban and Thang Hoa prefectures to develop mulberry cultivation, silkworm raising, silk reeling, and silk weaving. As a result, sericulture in Dang Trong was greatly expanded during that period, producing many famous silk products such as doan, linh, gam, voc, truou, and sa, which were sold domestically and exported abroad through the Hoi An trading port. For this reason, Le Quy Don wrote in Phu Bien Tap Luc: “…The people of Thang prefecture and Dien prefecture weave various kinds of gauze, doan silk, and patterned silk, fine and beautiful, no less than those of Guangdong.”
From that time onward, the port city of Hoi An under the Nguyen lords became a major transshipment center on the transoceanic international Silk Road in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, linking Western Europe and the Far East. Doan phu nhan thus became known as the “Lady of Sericulture” of Dang Trong. The girls of her homeland who cultivated mulberries, raised silkworms, and wove silk once sang:
Chiem Son land, with silks so fine,
Morning echoes loom sounds, evenings threads entwine.
Green mulberry fields of our native place,
Sun rises on Go Noi, warmth fills the space.
Silkworms spin cocoons for us,
Through diligent days they weave life’s silk thus…”

Origines
Doan Quy phi donna naissance a trois princes.
