Nguyen Cong Tru (1778–1858)
Background
Nguyen Cong Tru, courtesy name Ngo Trai, pseudonym Hy Van, was born in 1778 during the 38th year of the Canh Hung reign. His native place was Uy Vien village, Nghi Xuan district, Nghe Tinh province. His father was Duc Ngan Hau Nguyen Cong Tan; his mother, surnamed Nguyen, came from Son Nam. His family belonged to a distinguished scholarly lineage, renowned for examination success and noted for loyal officials and virtuous women, whose reputation shone across the Hong Son–Lam Thuy region.
In his youth, though a poor scholar, he diligently pursued classical studies. Even in those humble days, he showed deep concern for the fate of the people and the future of the country. At the age of 28, when the king traveled north for an investiture ceremony, Nguyen Cong Tru presented his “Ten Strategies for Peace” (Thai Binh Thap Sach) to offer plans for national stability and prosperity.
Official Career
- 1819: He passed first in the regional examination (Giai Nguyen), marking the beginning of his distinguished scholarly career. However, his nearly thirty years in office were marked by ups and downs—sometimes favored, at other times demoted.
- 1820: Appointed as Attendant at the diplomatic mission, later promoted to Vice Minister of Rites, entering the central administration.
- 1824: Served as Lang trung at the Ministry of Personnel and Director of the Imperial Academy, overseeing both administration and education.
- 1825: Appointed Assistant Administrator in Thanh Hoa, directly involved in local governance.
- 1827: Promoted to Vice Minister of War and served in the Privy Council, participating in important military deliberations.
- 1829: Appointed Commissioner for Agricultural Colonization (Doanh dien su); he organized land reclamation and founded two new districts, Kim Son and Tien Hai—one of his most outstanding achievements.
- 1832: Served as Right Vice Minister of War, then as Provincial Administrator of Hai Duong and later Governor-General of Hai An, overseeing both civil and military affairs in key regions.
- 1836: After suppressing rebellions, he was promoted to Minister of War; the court praised him with the phrase “lao nang kha tuong” (his merits are worthy of remembrance).
- 1840: After two years of demotion, he was reinstated as Chief Examiner of the Hanoi examination, responsible for selecting talents.
- 1841: Appointed Military Adviser, tasked with defending the western region of Cao Mien (Cambodia).
- 1842: Demoted to Lang trung of the Ministry of War, then appointed Governor of An Giang, continuing to administer a frontier province.
- 1844: Restored as Vice Minister of War, returning to high office.
- 1845: After another demotion, he served as Director in the Ministry of Justice and later Surveillance Commissioner of Quang Ngai, overseeing law and order.
- 1847: Appointed Prefect of Thua Thien, head of the imperial capital region—one of the most important positions at the time.
- 1857: When the Franco–Spanish forces invaded Vietnam, though retired and elderly, he volunteered to go to the front lines to resist the invaders.
- On the hour of the Ox, the 14th day of the 11th lunar month of the Mau Ngo year (December 18, 1858), he passed away. The court held mourning rites, accompanied by a royal elegy:
“Ta huu nghi van nghi vo
Tu sinh danh tuong danh than”
Meaning:
“On both sides, accomplished in civil and military matters;
In life and death, renowned as both general and minister.”
Assessment
In the second year of the Tu Duc reign (1848), he retired as Prefect of Thua Thien. Dai Nam Liet Truyen (Vol. 3) commented:
“Cong Tru was a free-spirited man of talent and vigor, skilled in literature, especially in the vernacular script. He composed many poems full of bold and expansive spirit, widely circulated in musical form. Throughout his career, he was often dismissed and reinstated, yet repeatedly proved his abilities on the battlefield. Early on, when he served as Commissioner for Agricultural Colonization, within a single year he established order, reclaimed land, gathered settlers, and created lasting benefits. In old age, after retirement, he withdrew from worldly affairs, enjoying nature for over ten years with a detached and transcendent spirit. People mostly remembered his bearing and charisma. After his death, the districts he founded built temples in his honor.”
Nguyen Cong Tru and Hat Noi
In his literary career, Nguyen Cong Tru left 65 hat noi compositions. To study his contributions to ca tru in general and hat noi in particular, ten representative works are often selected, including: Trang An hoai co, Tay Ho hoai co, Lam cho to mat nam nhi, Tren vi nuoc duoi vi nha. Others survive only in written form, such as Vinh ti ba, Dong tien khong quy, Vo cau, Ngay xuan, Thu ruou tho, and Muon ruou lam vui.
His works played a crucial role in shaping the structural framework of hat noi. From his compositions, ca tru performers derived various formal patterns and terms such as: Du kho, Doi mot kho, Muou tien, Muou hau, Thieu kho, Doi hai kho, Doi ba kho, Doi bon kho, Muou tien kep, Muou hau kep, etc.
A standard hat noi piece (Du kho) consists of 11 lines, typically structured as 4 + 2 + 4 + 1. After four opening lines in Nom script come two Sino-Vietnamese parallel sentences (lines 5 and 6), followed by four more Nom lines, and ending with a six-syllable closing line.
Worship
The temple dedicated to Nguyen Cong Tru is located in Quang Thien commune, Kim Son district, Ninh Binh province. Originally, it was a three-compartment house he built in Lac Thien hamlet as a residence and workplace. In 1852, local people rebuilt it into a Sinh Tu (temple built during one’s lifetime). Each year, on his birthday, festivals were held in his honor.
After his death, in 1882 the temple was renovated and expanded, and renamed Truy Tu Tu. In 1992, it was recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Site.
The temple is unique in that it was constructed from his own residence while he was still alive. It follows a Dinh-shaped architectural layout, with a five-bay front hall and a three-bay rear sanctuary. The front hall is flanked by two bronze pillars, and inside are altars, drum stands, gong stands, and three large horizontal plaques expressing the people’s reverence. The central sanctuary contains his altar, featuring a large white-glazed incense burner decorated with dark blue motifs of two dragons flanking the moon.
Every year, on the 14th day of the 11th lunar month, the people of Kim Son district hold a three-day memorial ceremony. During these events, artisans perform ca tru with the dan day lute and simple clappers, singing compositions by Nguyen Cong Tru.

Origines

(Hát nói)
