- Đình Ưu Long, Q.8, TP.HM thờ Tiền quân Kiến Xương quận công (cúng 18/2 âm lịch).

Background
Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức (1748-1819), originally named Huỳnh Tường Đức, was a famous general and founding meritorious official of the Nguyễn dynasty. He was one of the high-ranking military officials who made many contributions to the restoration cause of Nguyễn Ánh and to the process of building the Nguyễn government after 1802. Under the reigns of Gia Long and Minh Mạng, he held many important positions, especially those of Governor-General of Bắc Thành and Governor-General of Gia Định Citadel, playing a crucial role in stabilizing the political and military situation in both the North and the South.
He was born at Cái Én mound, Trường Khánh village, Định Viễn châu, Long Hồ dinh, now part of Khánh Hậu ward, Tây Ninh province, into a family with a martial tradition and many generations of service to the Nguyễn lords. His grandfather was Huỳnh Châu, and his father was Huỳnh Lương; both held the position of Cai đội under the Nguyễn lords. In 1731, Huỳnh Châu and Huỳnh Lương followed Commander Trương Phước Vĩnh in suppressing the uprising of Sá Tốt in the southwestern frontier region. After the uprising was pacified, the king of Chenla asked to offer the two regions of Peam Mesar, that is Mỹ Tho, and Longhôr, that is Vĩnh Long, to Lord Nguyễn Phúc Chu. The court established Định Viễn châu, built Long Hồ dinh, appointed officials to administer it, and brought more Vietnamese settlers there to reclaim the land. Huỳnh Châu’s family also settled there, contributing to the opening up of the new land and laying the foundation for the later development of Southern Vietnam.
Growing up in a military environment and on a newly reclaimed frontier land, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức was trained early in martial arts and military affairs. With his talent and many military achievements in assisting Nguyễn Ánh against the Tây Sơn, he was granted the royal surname Nguyễn in recognition of his services. From then on, Huỳnh Tường Đức changed his name to Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức, becoming one of the few meritorious officials honored with the royal surname of the Nguyễn imperial family. This was not only a noble reward for him personally, but also an expression of Emperor Gia Long’s special trust in a general who had made many contributions to the cause of national unification.
Career
At the end of the eighteenth century, the Tây Sơn movement arose, and the government of the Nguyễn lords in Đàng Trong fell into a serious crisis.
In 1781, he joined the Đông Sơn army led by Đỗ Thanh Nhơn, a force that played an important role in assisting Nguyễn Phúc Ánh in restoring the enterprise of the Nguyễn family. Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức, with his strong physique, excellent martial skills, and outstanding military talent, was regarded by his contemporaries as a “tiger general.” After Đỗ Thanh Nhơn was executed by Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức continued to be trusted and employed because of his loyalty and command ability.
In 1782, he was appointed to the position of Tiền quân, and from that time became one of Nguyễn Phúc Ánh’s closest generals. During the war with the Tây Sơn, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức repeatedly achieved great merit, especially in the event in which he single-handedly turned back to rescue Nguyễn Phúc Ánh when the Nguyễn lord was being pursued by Tây Sơn troops at Định Tường. According to historical records, when Nguyễn Phúc Ánh became stuck in the mud and fell into a dangerous situation, only Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức dared to turn back to provide rescue. Because it was already dark, the Tây Sơn troops feared that there might be an ambush and withdrew, allowing Nguyễn Phúc Ánh to escape danger. Deeply moved by his loyalty and courage, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh bestowed upon him the royal surname Nguyễn; from then on, Huỳnh Tường Đức changed his name to Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức. This was a special reward, showing Nguyễn Phúc Ánh’s absolute trust in the general who had saved him on many occasions.
In 1783, during a battle with the Tây Sơn army at Đông Tuyên, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức was defeated and captured along with many of his subordinates. Recognizing him as a talented man, Nguyễn Huệ accepted him into his service. However, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức agreed to serve only on the condition that he would not take part in battles against the Nguyễn forces, but would only participate in campaigns against the Trịnh forces in Đàng Ngoài. In 1786, when he followed Nguyễn Huệ in the northern campaign, he took advantage of the conflict between Nguyễn Huệ and the general Nguyễn Văn Duệ to seek an opportunity to return to Nguyễn Phúc Ánh. After persuading Nguyễn Văn Duệ to lead troops by way of the forest back to Quy Nhơn, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức secretly fled to Vạn Tượng and then to Siam to look for his former lord. When he arrived, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh had already returned to Gia Định. Although the king of Siam wished to keep him in service, he remained determined to return to his country and continue assisting Nguyễn Phúc Ánh. This action clearly demonstrated his loyalty to the restoration cause of the Nguyễn family.
After returning to Nguyễn Phúc Ánh’s side, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức continued to play an important role in the final military campaigns against the Tây Sơn. In 1799, he was promoted to Commander in Charge of the Right Army Camp and led troops to successfully capture Phan Rí, then attacked Thị Nại port, an important naval base of the Tây Sơn.
In 1800, he continued to participate in the campaign to take Quy Nhơn Citadel, contributing to weakening the enemy forces. After the victory, he was assigned to govern Định Tường town. Later, when Nguyễn Phúc Ánh captured the imperial capital of Phú Xuân, he was again sent to guard Quy Nhơn Citadel, taking on the task of protecting the newly recovered territory.
After Nguyễn Phúc Ánh ascended the throne as emperor in 1802, taking the reign title Gia Long, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức was granted the title of Duke, becoming one of the important founding meritorious officials of the Nguyễn dynasty. In peacetime, he continued to be entrusted with many important military and administrative responsibilities. In 1810, he was appointed Governor-General of Bắc Thành, concurrently serving as Imperial Commissioner and Commander of the Vanguard Army, responsible for administering the whole northern region, an area of special importance after the country had been unified. Six years later, in 1816, he was transferred back to the South to serve as Governor-General of Gia Định Citadel, working together with Deputy Governor-General Trịnh Hoài Đức to administer the whole of Southern Vietnam. The fact that he was entrusted with both Governor-Generalships, at Bắc Thành and Gia Định Citadel, the two largest administrative centers outside the capital Huế, shows that he was one of the very few great ministers especially trusted by Emperor Gia Long in both military ability and administrative capacity.
During his administration of Gia Định, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức focused on maintaining social order, consolidating the administrative apparatus, and ensuring security along the southern frontier. Together with his colleagues, he continued to stabilize the newly reclaimed land, laying the foundation for the development of Southern Vietnam in the early years of the Nguyễn dynasty. Although his tenure as Governor-General of Gia Định was not long, he made important contributions to building a stable administrative system before his successor, Lê Văn Duyệt, continued to develop it.
Family
His grandfather was Huỳnh Châu.
His father was Huỳnh Lương.
Mother: no records are available.
Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức had four sons, all of whom followed military careers and served the Nguyễn dynasty. Thanks to Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức’s great contributions to the restoration and founding of the dynasty, two of his sons were given princesses in marriage by Emperor Gia Long and became imperial sons-in-law of the Nguyễn dynasty.
Death and Worship
On the 9th day of the 9th lunar month of the Kỷ Mão year, October 27, 1819, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức passed away while serving as Governor-General of Gia Định Citadel, at the age of seventy-one. He was buried in his native place and worshiped at the Trung Hưng Công Thần Temple in the imperial capital Huế, in recognition of his contributions to the restoration and founding of the Nguyễn dynasty.
In the twelfth year of Minh Mạng’s reign, 1831, he was posthumously granted the title Kiến Xương Quận công. Many members of his family also continued to serve the Nguyễn dynasty; his four sons all followed military careers, among whom two became imperial sons-in-law through marriage to princesses of Emperor Gia Long. This shows the special status and trust that the court accorded to the family of Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức.
Today, in Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức’s native region in Long An province, his temple and tomb are still preserved quite intact by his descendants. The temple still contains many precious objects, such as a portrait painted in 1802, a monolithic wooden plank, sets of ceremonial weapons, parasols, parallel couplets, and many imperial edicts, directives, decrees, and investiture documents bestowed by the Nguyễn emperors. In addition, there are several special objects, such as a short ceremonial chair bestowed by the king of Siam and a bronze command gong awarded by Emperor Gia Long. The tomb complex was built during the Nguyễn period, with stone steles, a screen wall, and many architectural components of historical and artistic value. In 1993, the entire temple and tomb complex of Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a National Historical Relic.
In addition, Vanguard Commander Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức is worshiped at the following village communal houses:
Cẩm An Communal House, Cẩm An hamlet, Cẩm Giang commune, Gò Dầu district, Tây Ninh province, worships the deity Huỳnh Công Đức, with rites held on the 16th day of the 2nd lunar month;
Long Hải Communal House, Long Hải township, Long Điền district, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu province, worships Duke Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức, with rites held on the 12th day of the 11th lunar month;

Assessment and Evaluation
Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức was one of the representative founding meritorious officials of the Nguyễn dynasty, and at the same time a general who made many important contributions to the restoration cause of Nguyễn Ánh and the process of building the state in the early Nguyễn period. From the time he joined the Đông Sơn army until he became one of the great ministers at the head of the court, he always showed loyalty, military courage, and outstanding command ability. His military achievements in the wars against the Tây Sơn, especially his repeated rescues of Nguyễn Ánh and his participation in decisive campaigns such as Phan Rí, Thị Nại, and Quy Nhơn, contributed importantly to the final victory of the Nguyễn dynasty in 1802.
After the country was unified, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức continued to affirm his ability in the field of administrative management. The fact that he was successively entrusted with the offices of Governor-General of Bắc Thành and Governor-General of Gia Định Citadel shows Emperor Gia Long’s special trust in him. His contributions laid an important foundation for building the government and consolidating national unity in the early years of the Nguyễn dynasty.
Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức was also assessed as a man of loyal, sincere, righteous, and devoted character. The fact that he repeatedly refused to serve other forces and sought a way back to assist Nguyễn Ánh reflects his steadfast loyalty to the restoration cause of the Nguyễn family. It was precisely these qualities that helped him gain Emperor Gia Long’s absolute trust, receive the royal surname Nguyễn, and become one of the few meritorious officials to enjoy this honor.
Compared with many meritorious officials of the same period, such as Lê Văn Duyệt or Trịnh Hoài Đức, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức left behind fewer controversies concerning his style of governance or matters related to power. Nguyễn-dynasty historical records generally acknowledge him as a devoted and upright great minister with many services to the court. His official career was associated with both the wartime period and the period of national construction, making important contributions to consolidating Nguyễn rule throughout the country.

Origines
La maison communale de Cẩm An, hameau de Cẩm An, commune de Cẩm Giang, district de Gò Dầu, province de Tây Ninh, honore le génie Huỳnh Công Đức, avec une cérémonie le 16e jour du 2e mois lunaire ;

锦安亭,位于西宁省鹅油县锦江社锦安邑,供奉黄公德神,农历二月十六日祭祀;
龙海亭,位于巴地—头顿省龙田县龙海市镇,供奉郡公阮黄德,农历十一月十二日祭祀;
美中亭,位于前江省滁皋县美静安社美长邑,供奉前军阮黄德,农历三月十七日祭祀;
