Năm 1075, trước nguy cơ nhà Tống ráo riết chuẩn bị lực lượng để xâm lược Đại Việt, triều đình nhà Lý quyết định thực hiện chiến lược “tiên phát chế nhân” do danh tướng Lý Thường Kiệt đề xuất: chủ động tiến công sang lãnh thổ đối phương nhằm phá hủy căn cứ hậu cần và làm tan rã kế hoạch xâm lược.

Background

Thân Cảnh Phúc (1030-1077), also known by the names Cảnh Nguyên, Đạo Nguyên, or Cảnh Long, was a Tày chieftain and a famous general of the Lý dynasty during the second resistance war against the Song army (1075-1077). In folk tradition, he was also called “Phò mã Áo Chàm,” associated with the image of a mountain chieftain who was both an imperial son-in-law of the Lý dynasty and the leader of ethnic minority troops defending the frontier of Đại Việt. Some divine legends preserved at temples along the Lục Ngạn River also state that Thân Cảnh Phúc’s real name was Thân Vũ Thành, but this information has not been confirmed by official historical records.

According to historical sources and local divine legends, Thân Cảnh Phúc was born in 1030 into a family that had served for generations as local chieftains in Động Giáp, in the northeastern frontier region of Đại Việt. Thân Cảnh Phúc came from the Thân lineage, a powerful chieftain family in Động Giáp, now corresponding to the area of Lạng Sơn and part of Bắc Giang, which for many generations had governed the northeastern frontier region of Đại Việt. According to historical sources and local divine legends, his ancestors originally bore the surname Giáp, an old lineage of native chieftains in Động Giáp. From the beginning of the Lý period, in order to strengthen the bond between the central court and mountain chieftains, the Lý kings implemented a policy of marital alliance with local leaders, especially in the border area adjoining the Song dynasty.

Thanks to his talent and prestige, Thân Cảnh Phúc was entrusted with important responsibilities by the Lý court. After marrying a princess of the Lý dynasty, he was granted the royal surname, changing from the surname Giáp to Thân, and was appointed to the position of Tri châu, directly governing the northern frontier region. The granting of a new surname and the marriage to a princess were not only recognition of his merits and status, but also reflected the Lý dynasty’s policy of unity between the central court and mountain chieftains. Through marital ties and official appointments, the Lý court strengthened its connection with ethnic communities in the border region, contributing to the enhancement of national defense.

As someone who thoroughly understood the mountainous terrain and had great influence among the ethnic communities of the Northeast, Thân Cảnh Phúc built a large and battle-hardened local military force. This foundation enabled him to become one of the important military leaders of the Lý dynasty in the resistance war against the Song army (1075-1077). Under his command, Tày troops took advantage of the forested mountain terrain and flexibly applied raiding, ambush, and guerrilla tactics, helping weaken Song forces on their march and effectively supporting the victory of the army and people of Đại Việt at the Như Nguyệt River defensive line in 1077.

Career

Entrusted by the Court and Guarding the Frontier Region

Born into a family that had served for generations as chieftains of Động Giáp and had marital ties with the Lý royal family, Thân Cảnh Phúc soon inherited the role of governing the northeastern frontier of Đại Việt. After marrying Princess Thiên Thành in 1066, he was appointed by the court as Châu mục of Lạng Châu, directly administering a strategically important area on the border adjoining the Song dynasty.

Lạng Châu in the Lý period was not only an important gateway connecting Đại Việt with the North, but also an area inhabited by many ethnic minority communities. Therefore, assigning Thân Cảnh Phúc, a Tày chieftain of great local prestige, to serve as Châu mục showed the court’s trust in his administrative ability and capacity to gather forces. At the same time, it also demonstrated the Lý dynasty’s policy of ethnic unity and the combination of central authority with local chieftains in protecting the frontier of the realm.

During his administration of Lạng Châu, Thân Cảnh Phúc not only maintained order in the frontier region but also built local military forces composed mainly of Tày people and other mountain ethnic groups. These troops were familiar with the forested mountain terrain, skilled in combat, and became an important force in Đại Việt’s northern border defense system.

Participation in the Preemptive Attack on Song Territory in 1075

In 1075, faced with the danger that the Song dynasty was actively preparing forces to invade Đại Việt, the Lý court decided to implement the strategy of “striking first to control the enemy,” proposed by the famous general Lý Thường Kiệt: proactively attacking enemy territory in order to destroy logistical bases and disrupt the invasion plan.

In this campaign, Thân Cảnh Phúc was one of the military leaders who played an important role. Together with the chieftains Vi Thủ An, Tông Đản, Lưu Kế Tông, and Hoàng Kim Mãn, he commanded the land army attacking Yongzhou, the largest Song military base in the border region. Meanwhile, the naval force led by Lý Thường Kiệt attacked Qinzhou and Lianzhou, creating a pincer movement that threatened the entire Song defensive system.

Thanks to close coordination among the different forces, the Đại Việt army quickly broke through the enemy’s defensive lines, destroyed many garrison forces, and burned granaries and weapons depots intended for the war of invasion. The victory at Yongzhou, together with those at Qinzhou and Lianzhou, significantly delayed the Song army’s advance plan, allowing Đại Việt to take the initiative in preparing for the subsequent defensive war.

The fact that Thân Cảnh Phúc was entrusted with commanding an army attacking Song territory shows that he was one of the chieftains with outstanding military ability and was especially trusted by the court.

Commanding Local Militia against the Song Army in 1077

In early 1077, after completing preparations, the Song dynasty mobilized a large force under the command of Guo Kui and Zhao Xie to attack Đại Việt. The main Song army crossed the border through the Nam Quan pass and advanced into Lạng Châu, aiming to quickly capture Thăng Long.

As the person directly guarding the frontier region, Thân Cảnh Phúc and the local militia of Động Giáp were among the first to confront the Song offensive. In the Chi Lăng pass area, he organized forces to resist fiercely in order to slow the enemy’s advance. However, faced with the Song army’s overwhelming advantage in numbers and equipment, he proactively withdrew his forces into the forested mountains to preserve his troops and avoid direct confrontation with the enemy’s main army.

This was a wise military decision. Instead of trying to hold positions that could not be defended for long, Thân Cảnh Phúc shifted to guerrilla warfare, a form of combat especially suited to the terrain of the northeastern mountains. Together with the chieftains Sầm Khánh Tuân, Nùng Trọng Linh, and many other local leaders, he organized mobile militia units that continuously ambushed and raided small enemy detachments, cut off grain transport routes, harassed the rear, and wore down the strength of the Song army.

Alongside military operations, Thân Cảnh Phúc also carried out the “empty fields and deserted houses” tactic, organizing the evacuation of the people into the forests, bringing with them food, livestock, and necessary belongings. This meant that even when the Song army occupied an area, they could not exploit local supplies. Villages were almost completely deserted, with only a few elderly and weak people remaining. This policy caused the Song army to fall into food shortages and face great difficulty in maintaining the campaign.

The effectiveness of the guerrilla tactics commanded by Thân Cảnh Phúc was so great that even official Song histories had to acknowledge the fighting strength of the frontier militia. The Song History recorded that “Lưu Kỷ and Thân Cảnh Phúc both commanded strong troops,” and also described how his troops frequently ambushed, killed, or captured isolated Song detachments. The continuous raids caused the Song army to live in constant fear and face threats even behind its marching formation.

Thân Cảnh Phúc’s military activities made an important contribution to slowing the advance of Guo Kui’s main army, giving Lý Thường Kiệt enough time to complete the defensive system along the Như Nguyệt River line. At the same time, the fact that the Song army had to disperse its forces to deal with the mountain militia significantly weakened the strength of its main force before the decisive battle with the Đại Việt army.

Family

Thân Cảnh Phúc’s grandfather was Thân Thừa Quý, formerly named Giáp Thừa Quý, the leader of Động Giáp under the reign of Lý Thái Tổ. Because of his many merits in governing and defending the frontier region, he was given a princess in marriage by the king and granted the royal surname. According to traditions preserved in divine legends, from the surname Giáp (甲), the court added one stroke to change it into the surname Thân (申), symbolizing the recognition and special bond between the family and the royal court. From then on, Giáp Thừa Quý changed his name to Thân Thừa Quý, and many inhabitants of Động Giáp also adopted the surname Thân to remember the court’s favor. This is considered one of the origins of the Thân surname in present-day Lạng Sơn and Bắc Giang.

Thân Cảnh Phúc’s father was Thân Thiệu Thái, son of Thân Thừa Quý and successor to the position of chieftain of Động Giáp. In 1029, under the reign of Lý Thái Tông, he was given Princess Bình Dương in marriage by the king, becoming an imperial son-in-law of the Lý dynasty. Thân Thiệu Thái was not only a local leader but also made many contributions to defending the frontier. According to historical records, in 1060, he commanded Động Giáp troops in an attack on Như Ngao district in Tây Bình prefecture of the Song dynasty, capturing alive the military commander Dương Bảo and contributing to the strengthening of border security.

His wife was Princess Thiên Thành. In the eleventh month of the Bính Ngọ year, 1066, under the reign of Lý Thánh Tông, he was given Princess Thiên Thành in marriage and became an imperial son-in-law of the court. Earlier, in 1059, during an inspection and hunting trip in the Nam Bình region of Lạng Châu, King Lý Thánh Tông personally visited Thân Cảnh Phúc’s residence. This event shows that he and the Thân family already held a special position and had received the king’s attention and trust even before entering into marriage ties with the royal family.

The surviving official histories and written sources do not record specific information about Thân Cảnh Phúc’s children. Therefore, his direct descendants have not yet been clearly identified through historical documents. However, the influence of the Thân family continued for many later generations, and this lineage continued to hold an important position in the northeastern region of Đại Việt under the Lý dynasty, contributing to frontier defense and strengthening the relationship between the court and mountain ethnic communities.

Death and Worship

While continuing to fight against the Song army, Thân Cảnh Phúc heroically sacrificed his life in a battle in the Lục Ngạn region. Although historical records do not clearly state the course or exact time of the battle, his death was regarded as a major loss to the resistance forces in the Northeast.

After his sacrifice, Thân Cảnh Phúc was worshiped by the people of many localities in the Northeast as a village tutelary deity and a hero who protected the country. He was often worshiped together with Lý-dynasty princesses and members of the Thân family under the name Thân Vũ Thành or General Vũ Thành.

Notable worship sites include Đình Thân in Kép and Đồi Ngô, now in Bắc Giang province; Tòng Lệnh village communal house in Nghĩa Phương commune, traditionally believed to be his homeland; Thổ Hà communal house in Vân Hà ward, Bắc Ninh province; and especially the Từ Hả Temple relic complex in Chũ ward, Bắc Giang province, regarded as the center of Thân Cảnh Phúc worship. There, he is honored as Đương Cảnh Thành hoàng, Tri biên đầu Thượng tướng quân Vũ Thành tôn thần, with a worship statue dating from the Lê period.

Many relics dedicated to Thân Cảnh Phúc have been classified as historical-cultural relics and still maintain annual traditional festivals to commemorate the merits of the “Phò mã Áo Chàm.” Folk tradition also preserves many legends about his heroic sacrifice, further enriching the image of a loyal and brave general who made great contributions to the defense of Đại Việt’s frontier under the Lý dynasty.

Assessment and Evaluation

Thân Cảnh Phúc was one of the representative chieftains and famous generals of the Lý dynasty, playing an important role in defending the northern frontier and in the resistance war against the Song army (1075-1077). Although he is not recorded as extensively in official histories as Lý Thường Kiệt or Tông Đản, historical materials and local divine legends all show that he was an outstanding military leader with great influence among the ethnic communities of northeastern Đại Việt. His life and career reflect the special role of mountain chieftains in building the national defense posture and protecting territorial sovereignty under the Lý dynasty.

Thân Cảnh Phúc’s most notable contribution was his ability to organize and command local military and civilian forces. As Châu mục of Lạng Châu and leader of the Tày community in Động Giáp, he built a battle-hardened militia force that understood the forested mountain terrain and possessed a resilient fighting spirit. During the preemptive attack on Song territory in 1075, he and other border chieftains commanded the land army attacking Yongzhou, contributing to the destruction of the enemy’s defensive and logistical system. When the Song army launched its invasion of Đại Việt in 1077, he continued to command local forces in stubbornly resisting the enemy’s advance, then shifted to ambush, raid, and guerrilla tactics, wearing down the enemy and forcing them to disperse their forces in response.

Thân Cảnh Phúc’s talent was shown not only in courage but also in flexible military thinking. Facing the overwhelming superiority of the Song army, he did not choose direct confrontation but proactively preserved his forces and took advantage of the forested mountain terrain to conduct guerrilla warfare combined with the “empty fields and deserted houses” tactic. This method of warfare was suited to the natural conditions of the frontier region, limiting losses for his own forces while creating many difficulties for the invaders in movement and supply. His activities made an important contribution to slowing the advance of Guo Kui’s main army, enabling the Lý main force to complete the Như Nguyệt River defensive line and win the decisive victory in the resistance war.

A special mark in Thân Cảnh Phúc’s life was his role as a bridge between the central court and mountain ethnic communities. Born into a chieftain family that had governed Động Giáp for generations, and with three consecutive generations entering into marriage ties with the Lý royal family, he was a vivid example of the Lý dynasty’s policy of ethnic unity. Through the use of local chieftains, the granting of titles, and the establishment of marriage ties with the royal family, the Lý dynasty built a strong border defense system, of which Thân Cảnh Phúc was a representative figure. This connection not only strengthened national power but also created consensus between the court and ethnic communities in the task of defending the territory.

Thân Cảnh Phúc’s heroic sacrifice in the resistance war against the Song further highlighted the qualities of a general wholly loyal to the country. He devoted his entire life to the cause of guarding the frontier and protecting the independence of Đại Việt. After his death, people in many localities built temples to worship him and honored him as a hero who had rendered service to the nation. This shows that his image has not only been preserved in historical records but also remains alive in folk memory and belief.

From a historical perspective, Thân Cảnh Phúc is a representative figure of the ethnic minority leaders who made important contributions to the Vietnamese nation’s cause of building and defending the country. His contributions affirm that the Lý dynasty’s victory over the Song was not only the result of the strategic talent of famous generals and the central court, but also the achievement of solidarity among fraternal ethnic groups across the territory of Đại Việt. The life and career of Thân Cảnh Phúc therefore have significance beyond that of an individual, becoming a symbol of patriotism, the will to defend sovereignty, and the strength of great national unity in Vietnamese history.

Origines
