Ông sinh ngày 26 tháng 11 năm Tân Tỵ (21 tháng 12 năm 1761) tại xóm An Trung, làng An Hải, huyện Diên Phước, phủ Điện Bàn, dinh Quảng Nam (nay thuộc phường An Hải, thành phố Đà Nẵng).

Qua đời và an táng

Background

Thoại Ngọc hầu Nguyễn Văn Thoại (1761-1829), whose real name was Nguyễn Văn Thoại, was a famous general, administrator, and representative meritorious official of the Nguyễn dynasty. He made many important contributions in assisting Nguyễn Phúc Ánh in unifying the country, and was especially prominent in the reclamation, administration, and defense of the southwestern frontier under the reigns of Gia Long and Minh Mạng. With his military talent and governing ability, he is regarded as one of the meritorious officials who had great influence on the formation and development of Southern Vietnam in the early nineteenth century.

He was born on the 26th day of the 11th lunar month of the Tân Tỵ year, December 21, 1761, in An Trung hamlet, An Hải village, Diên Phước district, Điện Bàn prefecture, Quảng Nam garrison, now part of An Hải ward, Đà Nẵng city. His homeland was a region rich in martial tradition and held an important position in the southward territorial expansion of the Nguyễn lords, contributing to the formation of the will and qualities of the famous general he would later become.

His father was Nguyễn Văn Lượng, who once held the post of Từ thừa, a court official in charge of sacrificial rites at temples and shrines administered by the court. His mother was Nguyễn Thị Tuyết, the secondary wife of Nguyễn Văn Lượng. Growing up in a family with a tradition of service to the court, Nguyễn Văn Thoại was trained early in morality, a sense of responsibility, and loyalty to the monarch and love for the country. Although he did not come from a noble or illustrious family, he gradually affirmed his talent and courage through military achievements on the battlefield as well as accomplishments in reclaiming and developing the frontier region.

Career

Following Nguyễn Phúc Ánh and Achieving Many Military Merits

Nguyễn Văn Thoại grew up during a period when the country was continuously affected by civil war between the Trịnh and Nguyễn families, followed by the outbreak of the Tây Sơn movement. In 1775, to escape the chaos of war, his mother brought her children southward to live, settling in Thới Bình village on Cù Lao Dài, now in Vũng Liêm district, Vĩnh Long province. This new environment marked the beginning of his military life.

In 1777, when he was only sixteen years old, Nguyễn Văn Thoại went to Ba Giồng in Định Tường and asked to join the army of Nguyễn Phúc Ánh. Only one year later, he took part in battles to recover Gia Định Citadel from the Tây Sơn forces. In the following years, he remained closely beside Nguyễn Phúc Ánh during the most difficult stage of the struggle to regain the Nguyễn family’s enterprise. In 1782, after the Nguyễn forces were defeated at the Cần Giờ estuary, he escorted the Nguyễn lord in retreat to Ba Giồng. From 1784 to 1785, he twice followed Nguyễn Phúc Ánh to Siam to seek assistance, sharing the hardship of years in exile.

When Nguyễn Phúc Ánh gradually restored his power in Gia Định, Nguyễn Văn Thoại continuously achieved many military merits in campaigns to recover Southern Vietnam. Thanks to his talent and loyalty, between 1787 and 1789 he was promoted to the position of Cai cơ, becoming one of the promising young military officials of the Nguyễn army.

In the following years, he continued to be entrusted with many important duties. In 1791, he held the position of Commander of the Tắc Khái sea gate, also known as Cửa Lấp in Bà Rịa, and was responsible for protecting the coastal region. In 1792, during a diplomatic mission to Siam, on his return journey he commanded an attack that destroyed a group of Javanese pirates operating in the southern seas, helping ensure the safety of maritime routes. From 1796 to 1799, he was repeatedly sent by Nguyễn Phúc Ánh to Siam to carry out diplomatic and military missions, showing the Nguyễn lord’s special trust in him.

In 1800, Nguyễn Văn Thoại was appointed Imperial Commissioner and Upper Route General for Pacifying the West, coordinating with Lao forces to attack the Tây Sơn army in Nghệ An. However, during this campaign he withdrew his troops to the South without authorization and was therefore demoted to Cai đội. Even so, this mistake did not cause Nguyễn Phúc Ánh to lose trust in him.

After unifying the country in 1802 and ascending the throne as emperor with the reign title Gia Long, the king continued to employ Nguyễn Văn Thoại. He was appointed Imperial Commissioner, Commanding Officer, and Cai cơ, took part in recovering and stabilizing Bắc Thành, and then successively held the positions of Commander of Bắc Thành, Commander of Lạng Sơn, and Commander of Định Tường. All of these were strategic locations requiring a leader with both military ability and administrative experience.

In 1812-1813, Nguyễn Văn Thoại was assigned to go to Cambodia to escort King Nặc Ông Chân back to Gia Định, then escort him back to Phnom Penh and remain there on a protection mission. His activities helped consolidate the Nguyễn dynasty’s influence in Cambodia while maintaining security in the southwestern frontier region in the context of competition for influence between Vietnam and Siam.

Commander of Vĩnh Thanh and the Reclamation of the Southwest

After three years on duty in Cambodia, in 1816 Nguyễn Văn Thoại was summoned back to the capital. In 1817, he was appointed Commander of Vĩnh Thanh. This was the most important stage in his official career, when his talent was shown not only on the battlefield but also in organization, administration, and development of the frontier region.

Recognizing that the southwestern region still had much uncultivated land, sparse population, and an underdeveloped transportation system, Nguyễn Văn Thoại focused on implementing policies of land reclamation, village establishment, canal digging, road opening, and the strengthening of defense systems. In 1817, he organized the establishment of five new villages on Cù Lao Dài, creating conditions for settlers to live and produce there.

In 1818, he commanded the digging of Thoại Hà Canal, connecting Long Xuyên with Rạch Giá and stretching more than 30 kilometers. The project not only facilitated waterway transportation and land reclamation, but also helped strengthen military mobility. After its completion, Emperor Gia Long named the canal and the nearby mountain after him, forming the place names Thoại Hà and Thoại Sơn in recognition of the meritorious official’s service.

From 1819 to 1824, Nguyễn Văn Thoại continued to command the digging of Vĩnh Tế Canal, the largest hydraulic work in Southern Vietnam under the Nguyễn dynasty. The canal, nearly 90 kilometers long, connected Châu Đốc with Hà Tiên along the southwestern frontier and mobilized tens of thousands of laborers over many years. After completion, the canal not only expanded cultivated land and promoted trade but also held special military significance and affirmed Đại Nam’s sovereignty over the frontier region. To commemorate the contributions of his wife, who always accompanied him during the implementation of the project, Emperor Minh Mạng named the canal Vĩnh Tế after Châu Thị Tế.

Alongside canal construction, Nguyễn Văn Thoại also organized the establishment of a series of new villages along both banks of the canal, such as Vĩnh Nguơn, Vĩnh Tế, Vĩnh Điều, Vĩnh Gia, and Vĩnh Thông. He also provided money, grain, and support to help settlers stabilize their lives. When the people were not yet able to repay loans from the court, he used his own money to compensate on their behalf, showing his sense of responsibility and concern for the people’s livelihood.

In addition to hydraulic works, he directed the construction of road systems. In 1825, he opened a route from Châu Đốc to Lò Gò, present-day Angkor Borei, connecting residential areas and facilitating travel and the transport of goods. From 1826 to 1827, he continued to mobilize thousands of laborers to build the Núi Sam-Châu Đốc road. After its completion, he had the stele Châu Đốc Tân Lộ Kiều Lương erected to record the construction process.

Alongside the reclamation effort, Nguyễn Văn Thoại also made many contributions to protecting the southwestern frontier. In 1820, together with other Nguyễn generals, he suppressed the uprising of Sãi Kế, restoring order in Gia Định and Cambodia. In 1821, he was assigned concurrently to the positions of Commander Protector of Cambodia, Defender of Châu Đốc, and administrator of Hà Tiên. Thanks to his contributions to the protection of Cambodia, King Nặc Ông Chân offered the two regions of Chân Sum and Mật Luật to the Nguyễn dynasty, contributing to the expansion and consolidation of the southwestern territory.

In his final years, Nguyễn Văn Thoại continued to care for the development of the frontier. In 1827, he organized the establishment of defense units for Châu Đốc and Hà Tiên, while also returning to his homeland in Quảng Nam, where he donated money to repair communal houses, pagodas, and restore An Hải Market. In 1828, after the Vĩnh Tế Canal project was completed, he had the Vĩnh Tế Sơn stele erected and organized the collection and reburial of the remains of those who had died during the canal digging, showing respect for the labor and sacrifice of tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians.

The works initiated by him, especially Thoại Hà Canal and Vĩnh Tế Canal, still retain their value today in terms of economy, transportation, national defense, and territorial sovereignty, making the name of Thoại Ngọc hầu one of the most representative meritorious officials of the Nguyễn dynasty.

Death and Burial

After more than half a century of devoted service to the Nguyễn dynasty in military affairs, diplomacy, and frontier administration, Nguyễn Văn Thoại died of a serious illness at his post in Châu Đốc on the 6th day of the 6th lunar month of the Kỷ Sửu year, July 6, 1829, at the age of sixty-eight. His death brought to an end the life of a meritorious official who had devoted almost all his youth and final years to protecting, reclaiming, and developing the southwestern region of the country.

After his death, the court posthumously granted him the titles General of Martial Valor and Pillar of the State Grand Commander, and bestowed on him the posthumous name Võ Khác, in recognition of his great contributions to the Nguyễn dynasty. His remains were buried at the foot of Núi Sam, now in Châu Đốc city, An Giang province, a place where he had guarded for many years and directly commanded the reclamation of the frontier land. His tomb complex, commonly called Sơn Lăng, includes the tomb of Thoại Ngọc hầu at the center, with the tombs of his principal wife Châu Thị Tế and secondary wife Trương Thị Miệt, also recorded as Trương Thị Thiệt, on either side. The tombstone of Nguyễn Văn Thoại is engraved with his full titles, merits, and posthumous name, and clearly states that the stele was erected in the 10th year of Minh Mạng, 1829, by his son Nguyễn Văn Lâm. Today, the tomb of Thoại Ngọc hầu at the foot of Núi Sam remains one of the representative historical relics of An Giang province, and a place where the people remember and express gratitude to the eminent official who made great contributions to reclaiming, protecting, and establishing the sovereignty of the southwestern region of the Fatherland. It is one of the representative historical relics of the Mekong Delta and was classified by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a National Historical Relic on December 4, 1997.

Family

His father was Nguyễn Văn Lượng, who once held the post of Từ thừa, a minor official in charge of sacrificial rites at temples and shrines of the court.

His mother was Nguyễn Thị Tuyết, the secondary wife of Nguyễn Văn Lượng.

Regarding marriage, Nguyễn Văn Thoại had one principal wife and one secondary wife. His principal wife was Châu Thị Tế, who is mentioned many times in historical records and was also the person who accompanied him for many years while he guarded the southwestern region. In recognition of her merits and contributions in caring for the people and encouraging laborers during the canal-digging process, Emperor Gia Long named Vĩnh Tế Canal after her. It was one of the largest hydraulic and transportation works in Southern Vietnam in the early nineteenth century. His secondary wife was Trương Thị Miệt. After Thoại Ngọc hầu passed away, both women were buried beside his tomb at the foot of Núi Sam in Châu Đốc, An Giang, forming the Thoại Ngọc hầu tomb complex that is still preserved today.

Regarding his children, historical sources do not fully record the number of Nguyễn Văn Thoại’s children. However, the best-known son is Nguyễn Văn Lâm, who took care of his father’s burial and erected the tombstone in the 10th year of Minh Mạng, 1829. On the tombstone, the inscription “Filial son Lâm respectfully erected this” still remains, confirming that Nguyễn Văn Lâm was the person who directly erected the stele in memory of his father. Apart from Nguyễn Văn Lâm, the surviving historical documents provide almost no detailed information about Thoại Ngọc hầu’s other children.

Assessment and Evaluation

In the history of the Nguyễn dynasty, Thoại Ngọc hầu Nguyễn Văn Thoại was one of the representative meritorious officials who possessed both military talent and broad vision in administrative management, land reclamation, and territorial development. While many famous generals of the same period are remembered mainly for battlefield achievements, Nguyễn Văn Thoại’s name is also associated with the construction of the southwestern frontier region, leaving lasting marks in economy, national defense, and territorial sovereignty.

Over more than half a century of service to the Nguyễn dynasty, from the years when he followed Nguyễn Phúc Ánh through the hardships of the war against the Tây Sơn until he became a high-ranking official under the reigns of Gia Long and Minh Mạng, Nguyễn Văn Thoại consistently showed absolute loyalty and a spirit of devotion to the nation. He repeatedly undertook difficult duties such as diplomatic missions to Siam, protecting Chenla, guarding important frontier regions, and administering newly reclaimed areas. Whether in wartime or peacetime, he fulfilled the responsibilities entrusted to him and became one of the pillars of the Nguyễn dynasty in the process of unifying and consolidating the country.

Thoại Ngọc hầu’s talent lay not only in military command but also in his strategic thinking about national construction. He clearly understood that protecting the Southwest could not rely solely on the army, but had to combine land reclamation, population organization, transportation development, and the building of defense systems. Therefore, the works he commanded, such as Thoại Hà Canal, Vĩnh Tế Canal, road systems, bridges, and dozens of newly established villages, helped transform a still-wild region into important centers of settlement and production. These works not only served economic life but also created a natural defensive line, affirming the presence and administrative authority of the Nguyễn dynasty over the southwestern frontier.

From a historical perspective, Nguyễn Văn Thoại’s contributions laid the foundation for the process of Vietnamese settlement and long-term stabilization of the An Giang-Hà Tiên region, while also helping establish Vietnam’s actual sovereignty over the frontier area adjoining Chenla. The organization of land reclamation, village establishment, road opening, canal digging, and the construction of fortifications created a durable economic, demographic, and administrative foundation, deeply influencing the formation of the Mekong Delta as it appears today.

However, his career also reflects the limitations of the historical context of the time. Large-scale works, especially Vĩnh Tế Canal, were carried out with the compulsory labor of tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians, causing many people to endure heavy corvée labor and even die during construction. This has generated much debate among historians. Yet, when placed in the conditions of state organization and public-works construction methods in the early nineteenth century, this was a common feature of many feudal states in the region. Historical responsibility should be viewed within the overall administrative mechanism of the court rather than attributed entirely to Nguyễn Văn Thoại personally. In fact, historical sources also record that he repeatedly cared for the lives of settlers, advanced money and grain to help people stabilize their lives, and organized the collection and reburial of the remains of those who died during canal construction, showing concern for the lives and welfare of the people.

With his great contributions in military affairs, administration, and territorial development, Thoại Ngọc hầu is regarded as one of the most influential meritorious officials in Southern Vietnam under the Nguyễn dynasty. His name is preserved not only in historical records but also in the very lands, canals, and mountains that bear his name, such as Thoại Sơn and Thoại Hà. His tomb, temple, and related relics are still preserved and have become important cultural and historical sites, reflecting later generations’ gratitude toward an eminent official who devoted his entire life to expanding the borders, defending the frontier, and developing the southern land.

Origines
