Ho Son Pagoda (Lien Minh Commune, Ninh Binh Province)

Name and Geographical Location

Ho Son Pagoda is located in Lien Minh Commune, a low-lying floodplain area of the Red River Delta. However, there is a towering limestone mountain standing in the middle of Ho Son village. It is called Ho Son because the mountain resembles the shape of a tiger. At the southern foot of the mountain lies the ancient pagoda named Ho Son (also called Non Son or Ho Linh Tu).

History and Historical Figures

a marriage that carried diplomatic significance between Dai Viet and Champa in the early 14th century.

In 1301, during a visit to Champa by the Retired Emperor Tran Nhan Tong, he promised to marry his daughter Huyen Tran to the Cham king Che Man. This promise later became the foundation for a political marriage aimed at strengthening friendly relations between the two nations. In 1306, Princess Huyen Tran officially traveled to Champa in a ceremonial bridal procession to become the queen of King Che Man. This marriage not only had personal meaning but also served as an important diplomatic event, contributing to the maintenance of peace between Dai Viet and Champa during that period.

However, the marriage between Princess Huyen Tran and King Che Man lasted only a little more than a year. King Che Man suddenly died from a serious illness. According to the customs of Champa at that time, when the king died, the most favored wives were required to be cremated on the funeral pyre to follow the king in death. Because Huyen Tran was greatly beloved by Che Man, she was also included in the list of those required to perform this ritual. At that time, Huyen Tran had just given birth to a son, the crown prince Che Da Da. Faced with this urgent situation, the king of Dai Viet at that time, Tran Anh Tong (the elder brother of the princess), sent envoys to Champa to find a way to bring the princess back to the country, thereby saving her from the ritual of sacrificial death.

After returning to Dai Viet, in early 1309, Princess Huyen Tran requested permission from the Retired Emperor Tran Nhan Tong—who was then practicing Buddhism at Yen Tu—to shave her head and enter monastic life. Her wish was granted. Initially, she practiced at Trau Son Mountain in the area of present-day Bac Ninh. In 1311, she moved to Ho Son village, where she established a hermitage and founded Non Son Pagoda, whose formal name was Quang Nghiem Tu, in order to devote herself to meditation and Buddhist practice.

At the same time, to the west of Ho Mountain, in Tien village (Tam Thanh Commune), Princess Thuy Bao—who was the paternal aunt of Princess Huyen Tran—also withdrew from worldly life to practice Buddhism. She established the An Lac flower garden and built a pagoda there. The two princesses later lived a quiet monastic life together, serving Buddhism while also caring for the spiritual life of the local people, contributing to the stability and prosperity of the region.

After the death of Princess Huyen Tran (traditionally believed to have occurred on the 9th day of the 4th lunar month of the year Canh Thin), local people remembered her merits in religious practice and in helping the community. Therefore, they honored her as a Holy Mother and established a temple at the place where she had practiced at Ho Son, worshipping her together with Princess Thuy Bao to commemorate the contributions of the two princesses to this land.

Architecture and Landscape

Up to the present day, Ho Son Pagoda still preserves 27 statues and 27 ancient ritual objects. Among them are many valuable ancient books and artifacts, such as statues of the two princesses, four royal decrees issued by feudal dynasties conferring titles upon the two princesses, and several porcelain and ceramic incense burners in the artistic style of the Le period. Based on the historical value of the pagoda, on September 27, 2006, the Provincial People’s Committee issued a decision recognizing Ho Son Pagoda as a provincial-level historical site.

For many years, Ho Son Pagoda had suffered serious deterioration. According to the wishes of local residents, Buddhist followers, and the monks in charge of the pagoda to restore and preserve the historical monument, on January 22, 2020, the Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee approved a decision permitting the restoration and renovation of Ho Son Pagoda. In 2021, the reconstruction of Ho Son Pagoda officially began with the aim of contributing to the preservation and promotion of cultural values from the Tran dynasty.

The restoration project of Ho Son Pagoda was built on the original foundation of the old pagoda and the site was expanded to cover a total area of 13 hectares, including 30 large and small architectural structures. Among them, the worship complex includes the Tam Bao Hall, the Mother Goddess Temple, the Temple of Princess Huyen Tran, the Patriarch Hall, the Co Pavilion, the Cau Pavilion, statues of the Eighteen Arhats, the Stele House, and the complex of the Three Patriarch Stupas.

The pagoda and the temple dedicated to Princess Huyen Tran were restored with two symmetrically arranged gates. Entering through the left gate and climbing several dozen stone steps, visitors encounter two rows of statues representing the Eighteen Arhats modeled after those at Tay Phuong Pagoda.

Located in the center is the main Tam Bao Hall, while to the right stands the temple dedicated to Princess Huyen Tran. Both the pagoda and the temple were restored according to the architectural layout known as “front in the shape of the character nhat and rear in the shape of the character dinh.” All Buddha statues, statues of the two princesses, horizontal plaques, parallel couplets, altars, and architectural components inside are intricately carved and lacquered in red and gilded with gold on a traditional reddish-brown background, expressing the sacred and solemn character of the spiritual site.

In addition to the pagoda and the temple, Son Trang Cave, the Heaven Sacrificial Altar, and the incense cave on the mountainside have also been reconstructed.

Within the pagoda complex stands a 13-story Bao stupa reaching a height of 26 meters, a statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, a flagpole, an ong-stone well, a traditional herbal medicine house, and especially the Dragon Boat – the Princess Huyen Tran Museum, which recreates the scene of the royal dragon boat bringing Princess Huyen Tran back from Champa.

Another notable feature is the statue of Buddha King Tran Nhan Tong made from a single block of sapphire stone, standing 5.1 meters high, symbolizing the lifespan of the Buddha King. Also within the pagoda grounds are a guest house, a nuns’ guest house, twelve monks’ stupas, and many auxiliary works such as flower gardens, ornamental trees, and a lotus pond, making the pagoda complex more complete and beautiful.

Classification
With its historical, cultural, and architectural values, on September 27, 2006, Ho Son Pagoda was officially recognized as a provincial-level historical site by decision of the Nam Dinh Provincial People’s Committee.
