My Cu Pagoda (Hai Phong)

Geographical Location and Name

My Cu Pagoda, whose formal name is Linh Son Tu, is one of the four most renowned and sacred ancient pagodas of Thuy Nguyen district. The pagoda was originally established during the Dinh dynasty (10th century). Having endured more than a thousand years of historical change and social transformation, it has nevertheless preserved outstanding values in terms of culture, spirituality, and traditional architecture, and has become an important spiritual anchor for local residents.

The pagoda is situated on a site regarded as one where the “five sacred creatures converge”: the Phoenix, Dragon, Turtle, Tiger, and Elephant. This rare geomantic formation is considered an auspicious land in Eastern feng shui thought, symbolizing harmony between nature and sacred space. Specifically, to the front right of the pagoda lies Tiger Mountain, forming a strong protective position; to the front left is Turtle Mountain, symbolizing durability and longevity. Behind the pagoda stretches a range of blue stone mountains winding in the shape of a dragon, serving both as a solid natural backing and a sacred form of protection for the entire complex. From the main hall, one can look into the distance and see Elephant Mountain (in the An Lao area) positioned in front like an elephant paying homage, creating a balanced, harmonious, and solemn feng shui configuration.

It is precisely this harmonious combination of natural landscape and spiritual elements that has shaped the distinctive value of My Cu Pagoda – Linh Son Tu, not only as an ancient religious structure but also as a representative historical and cultural heritage site of the Thuy Nguyen region.

History and Historical Figures

Throughout the course of national history, My Cu Pagoda (Linh Son Tu) has been closely associated with major historical milestones, thereby demonstrating its exceptional historical, cultural, and spiritual significance.

In ancient times, according to folk legend, the mother of King Le Hoan once came to the pagoda to pray for a child and later gave birth to Le Hoan, the ruler who played a crucial role in unifying the country and founding the Early Le dynasty. This detail indicates that from a very early period, My Cu Pagoda was regarded as a sacred place holding an important position in the religious life of the Thuy Nguyen community.

During the Tran dynasty, My Cu Pagoda was closely associated with Tue Trung Thuong Si, namely Hung Ninh Vuong Tran Tung, a talented general as well as an eminent thinker and Zen master of Vietnamese Buddhism. He was deeply revered by the three patriarchs of the Truc Lam Zen lineage—Dieu Ngu Giac Hoang Tran Nhan Tong, Zen Master Phap Loa, and Zen Master Huyen Quang—who honored him as their teacher. Tue Trung Thuong Si established an estate in the Duong Chan area and founded a meditation retreat at the Linh Son Pagoda complex, taking this place as a center for religious practice and the dissemination of Zen thought. According to Tran-dynasty relics (circa 1300–1304), Dieu Ngu Giac Hoang Tran Nhan Tong—the enlightened king and First Patriarch of the Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen school—frequently visited Linh Son Pagoda to engage in discussions with Tue Trung Thuong Si on progressive Buddhist ideas and the socially engaged orientation of Vietnamese Zen. These exchanges made an important contribution to the formation and development of the Truc Lam Zen lineage, a school deeply imbued with national identity.

During the period of the Later Le Restoration, My Cu Pagoda continued to be renovated and embellished, leaving behind many valuable relics. Notable among them is the Stone Pillar Platform dating to the Chinh Hoa reign (1680–1705), as well as a bronze bell cast during the reign of King Minh Mang (1836), reflecting the sustained attention of both the royal court and the populace toward the pagoda over the centuries.

In the modern era, My Cu Pagoda has served not only as a religious center but also as an important revolutionary site. During the resistance war against French colonialism, the pagoda sheltered revolutionary cadres and hosted secret meetings of the National Salvation Sangha. Many monks at the pagoda became early participants in the revolutionary movement, most notably the monk Nguyen Van Tuong, who volunteered to join the army, fought to defend the nation, and heroically sacrificed his life.

During the resistance war against the United States, My Cu Pagoda once again assumed a special role by serving as a site for the deployment and concealment of missile positions of Division 363, contributing to the defense of northern Vietnamese airspace. These quiet yet significant contributions affirm that My Cu Pagoda is not only an ancient religious monument but also a historical witness closely linked to the struggles for national independence and defense.

With its profound historical and cultural values accumulated across many dynasties, My Cu Pagoda (Linh Son Tu) stands as a representative heritage site of Thuy Nguyen, where spiritual tradition, patriotism, and national cultural identity converge in harmony.

Architecture, Landscape, and Relics

Having undergone numerous restorations, Linh Son Pagoda has largely retained the architectural form of its original foundation, preserving the venerable lines and proportions characteristic of a pagoda with a history of more than a millennium. The overall architectural layout follows a traditional scheme arranged along an Upper–Middle–Lower axis, harmonizing with the natural terrain and the spatial concepts of ancient monastic architecture.

At the highest position stands a small pagoda commonly known as the Cao Pagoda, symbolizing solemnity and sacredness. Slightly lower is the Patriarchs’ Hall, where eminent monks who once resided at and propagated Buddhism in the pagoda are worshipped. In front of the Patriarchs’ Hall are the Front Hall and the Main Buddha Hall, consisting of five bays in the Front Hall and three bays in the Rear Sanctuary, forming the principal worship space of the entire complex. Most of the statues and ritual objects have been preserved intact, featuring decorative motifs in ancient artistic styles that reflect the aesthetic sensibilities and craftsmanship of earlier generations.

Among the pagoda’s valuable relics, the most prominent is the Stone Pillar Platform dating to the Chinh Hoa reign (1680–1705), erected during the reign of King Le Hy Tong, which still stands before the entrance to the Cao Pagoda. Also noteworthy is the bronze bell cast in 1836, bearing the inscription “Hoang trieu Minh Mang,” which holds great historical and artistic value in terms of traditional bronze casting. Particularly remarkable is a statue of Buddha A Di Da in the Tam Bao hall, approximately 2.30 meters in height with a lotus pedestal diameter of 1.40 meters, which was molded directly onto the trunk of a locally growing ironwood tree, demonstrating a unique sculptural technique and the creative ingenuity of ancient artisans.

Beyond its architectural and sculptural significance, the Linh Son Pagoda grounds also preserve vivid traces of time. Notable among these is an ancient pine tree estimated to be around 800 years old, along with a system of moss-covered ancient stupas imbued with a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. These relics not only contribute to the pagoda’s venerable and sacred landscape but also serve as clear evidence of its long history, confirming that Linh Son Pagoda was once a residence and practice site for many generations of eminent monks and played an important role in the Buddhist life of the Thuy Nguyen region.
