An Lac Temple – An Lac Hamlet, Hong Tien Commune

Name and Location

An Lac Temple is situated in An Lac Hamlet, Hong Tien Commune, Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province. The temple lies within a traditional Northern Vietnamese rural landscape, featuring village paths, small alleys, communal ponds, ancient trees, and surrounding rice fields. Its location is convenient, close to inter-communal traffic routes and not far from the center of Khoai Chau District, making travel, worship, and religious activities accessible.

An Lac Temple not only preserves cultural and historical values associated with the worship of Thai uy Do Anh Vu but also serves as a spiritual hub where unique folk festivals take place and where community bonds have been strengthened over generations.

History and Historical Figure

Thai uy Do Anh Vu (1113–1158) lived through the reigns of three Ly dynasty emperors: Ly Nhan Tong, Ly Than Tong, and Ly Anh Tong. Born in 1113 in Hong Chau, he came from a family with close ties to the royal household. His father was related on the maternal side to Thai uy Ly Thuong Kiet, and his sister (or younger sister) Quynh Anh is believed to have been Chieu Hien Empress, the mother of Emperor Ly Than Tong.

From a young age, he was known for his handsome appearance, calm demeanor, and intelligence. Recognizing his talent, Emperor Ly Nhan Tong recruited him into the palace as Thuong Lam tu de, and later appointed him to serve closely at his side. Under Emperor Ly Than Tong, Do Anh Vu held an important position within the imperial guard.

In 1135, he was entrusted with commanding the imperial army to attack Champa. By 1137, as Emperor Ly Than Tong fell gravely ill, he entrusted the care and guidance of the crown prince Thien To (later Emperor Ly Anh Tong) to Do Anh Vu. After the emperor passed away, Do Anh Vu placed Ly Anh Tong—then only two years old—on the throne and assumed the role of regent. With remarkable political abilities, he reformed court administration, stabilized domestic affairs, and ensured the smooth functioning of the state. He was granted the title Phu quoc Thai uy, bestowed the Ly royal surname, and appointed Kiem hieu Thai pho, holding significant military and political authority.

In 1158, Do Anh Vu fell seriously ill and passed away. The court mourned his death, and the people grieved deeply. His remains were returned to his mother’s homeland in An Lac Hamlet, Dong Tien Commune, Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province, where the local population built An Lac Temple and honored him as the village’s tutelary deity in recognition of his contributions to protecting and strengthening the Ly dynasty.

Architecture and Landscape

The overall layout of An Lac Temple faces south, following the traditional concept of “sitting north, facing south” to welcome vital energy and harmonize with the natural surroundings. The temple grounds are spacious, enclosed by low brick walls, with a semicircular pond in the front creating a harmonious “minh duong” space that enhances the sacred and tranquil atmosphere. The main axis runs straight from the three-entrance gate (tam quan) to the primary worship hall, reflecting the Vietnamese medieval spatial philosophy of “heaven – earth – human.”

The structures within the temple are arranged along this central axis, including the Gate, Courtyard, Front Hall (Tien te), Central Hall (Trung tu), Connecting Corridor (Ong muong), and Rear Sanctuary (Hau cung).

The tam quan gate has a traditional three-entrance structure with curved-tile roofing and reliefs of the four sacred animals—dragon, kylin, tortoise, and phoenix—on its upper section. Paired couplets on both sides praise the achievements of the village’s deity.

The courtyard, paved with Bat Trang bricks, provides ample space for ceremonies and communal activities.

The temple’s wooden architectural system is relatively well preserved. The main beam frameworks feature the traditional chong ruong – gia chieng and ke chuyen styles typical of Northern delta architecture. Many wooden components—such as cau dau, xa nach, bay, and dau du—are intricately carved with motifs of dragons, phoenixes, flowers, and flowing clouds, reflecting the craftsmanship of early 20th-century artisans and their inherited aesthetic traditions.

Most notable is the two-tier, eight-roof Hau cung, which emphasizes the sacred nature of the main worship space. The elegantly curved roof corners give the structure a graceful form oriented toward the spiritual realm.

Artifacts

An Lac Temple preserves many artifacts of cultural and historical significance, reflecting local religious practices and traditional Vietnamese sculpture and decorative arts. The most prominent are two wooden Guardian statues, each 1.8 meters tall, crafted with powerful physiques and dignified expressions embodying the symbolic role of divine protectors. These works exemplify traditional wooden sculpture and showcase the refined skills of early 20th-century artisans.

Additionally, the temple houses numerous worship objects such as thrones (ngai tho), ceremonial poles (bat bieu), horizontal boards (hoanh phi), and couplets—all meticulously lacquered and gilded, showcasing harmony in aesthetic expression. These artifacts not only possess artistic value but also reflect local ritual customs and religious beliefs. Their carved patterns—dragons, phoenixes, and floral designs—demonstrate continuity with Nguyen-dynasty artistic traditions and the community’s reverence for Do Anh Vu.

A particularly valuable artifact is the stone stele recording the merits of Do Anh Vu. It provides important historical information about his contributions and influence on the local community. The stele serves as tangible evidence of long-standing worship traditions and is a crucial source for studying local history, culture, and belief systems.

Together with the temple’s architecture and landscape, these artifacts form a heritage space rich in historical, artistic, and spiritual significance. They contribute to research on both tangible and intangible culture in the Northern Delta and help preserve traditional values for future generations.

Festival

The An Lac Temple Festival in Dong Tien Commune is held annually over three days, from the 2nd to the 4th of the 11th lunar month, to commemorate the virtues of Duc Thanh Do Anh Vu—Minister, Ly Thai Uy, and meritorious official of the Ly dynasty. The festival represents an important religious and cultural event that blends devotion with local communal tradition.

Ceremonial rituals are conducted with solemnity, including palanquin processions and incense offerings at the main shrines, expressing respect and gratitude to the village deity. Alongside these rituals, the festival features cultural performances, community exchanges, and traditional folk games, creating a vibrant atmosphere that strengthens community bonds and preserves intangible cultural values.

The festival not only honors the contributions of Duc Thanh Do Anh Vu but also plays a vital role in preserving worship traditions and educating younger generations about local history and culture. Through the festival’s activities, both residents and visitors can experience the region’s distinctive religious practices, arts, music, and customs, contributing to the development of cultural tourism associated with the historical site.

Heritage Classification

According to Decision No. 97/QD dated January 21, 1992, issued by the Ministry of Culture, Information, and Sports, An Lac Temple is classified as a National Historical and Artistic Monument.

Temple An Lac – Hameau An Lac, commune Hong Tien
