Ngoc Chan Temple

Geographical location

Ngoc Chan Temple is located in Yen Tri commune, Y Yen district, Nam Dinh province, about 10 km south of the district center. The monument complex is built near the dike of the Day River—one of the major rivers of the Northern Delta, which has played an important role in the economic life and settlement history of local inhabitants.

From the dike looking down, the temple lies within a relatively large compound surrounded by many old trees, creating an ancient and quiet landscape. The building faces the Day River, with an open riverside space in front and the village area behind, forming a location relatively separated from residential zones.

This location is not only advantageous in terms of scenery but also carries feng shui and historical significance. In the tradition of building religious monuments in the Northern Delta, selecting a site near a river is often associated with the concept of “water in front, land behind,” creating a favorable landscape while also facilitating waterway transportation in the past. Thus, Ngoc Chan Temple is closely associated with the natural environment of the Day River area and reflects the cultural spatial characteristics of historical and religious monuments in Y Yen, Nam Dinh.

Worshipped figure

The main figure worshipped at Ngoc Chan Temple is Dang Dung—a prominent general and loyal minister in the resistance against the Ming forces in the early fifteenth century. He was the son of Quoc cong Dang Tat, a general who made many contributions to the movement resisting the Ming and restoring the Later Tran dynasty.

From 1407, when the Tran royal member Tran Ngoi raised the banner of revolt and proclaimed himself Gian Dinh De, Dang Tat led troops from Hoa Chau to Nghe An to support him. After Dang Tat and Nguyen Canh Chan were suspected and executed by Gian Dinh De in 1409, Dang Dung together with Nguyen Canh Di (son of Nguyen Canh Chan) abandoned Gian Dinh De and enthroned Tran Quy Khoang as emperor, known as Trung Quang De, continuing the resistance against the Ming forces.

During the following years, Dang Dung became one of the key generals of the Later Tran forces and directly participated in many important battles against the Ming army. Together with generals such as Nguyen Suy and Nguyen Canh Di, he organized several counterattacks, especially in the regions of Northern Vietnam and Nghe An–Thuan Hoa.

Notably, in the Sai Gia battle in 1413, Dang Dung commanded troops in a surprise attack on the camp of the Ming general Truong Phu, demonstrating both determination and military talent despite the great disparity in forces. However, facing the overwhelming military power of the Ming dynasty, the Later Tran resistance gradually weakened and ultimately failed.

Although the resistance was unsuccessful, Dang Dung was still evaluated by historical records as a loyal and steadfast general who wholeheartedly supported the king and defended the country. His spirit of loyalty and resistance became a symbol of patriotic devotion in national history. For this reason, temples were established in many places to commemorate his merits and honor his integrity, including Ngoc Chan Temple in Yen Tri commune, Y Yen district, Nam Dinh province.

Architectural landscape

Ngoc Chan Temple is built according to a ground plan shaped like the Chinese character “Dinh” (丁), a layout quite common in traditional temple architecture in the Northern Delta. The complex consists of two main structures: the front hall and the inner sanctuary, arranged sequentially along a longitudinal axis.

The front hall has five compartments and reflects the architectural style of the Nguyen dynasty (around the nineteenth century). The roof is relatively flat and covered with traditional tiles, giving the building a solid and balanced appearance. The wooden frame is designed in the gia chieng ke chuyen style, a common structural system in traditional architecture that ensures durability while creating an airy interior space. The symmetrical front and rear bracket system supports the roof and adds elegance to the structure.

Behind the front hall stands the inner sanctuary with three compartments, separated from the front hall by a small courtyard that creates a solemn transitional space before entering the main worship area. The sanctuary follows the “front curved roof – rear gable wall” architectural style.

A distinctive feature of the sanctuary architecture is that the columns, beams, brackets, and pillars are all made of stone. These components were carefully crafted and decorated with refined motifs, creating a dignified and imposing worship space. The use of stone materials not only enhances the durability of the structure but also increases its artistic value, reflecting the technical skill and aesthetic sense of temple builders in the past.

Festival

Every year in the third lunar month, the people of Ngoc Chan village joyfully organize a festival to commemorate the great contributions of General Dang Dung in building dikes to prevent floods and protect agricultural harvests.

During the festival many games take place, but the most famous and meaningful activity is the boat racing competition, which is carefully prepared. The entire village is divided into two teams: Thuong hamlet and Ha hamlet. The racing boat is made of doi wood, measuring 15.5 meters in length and 1.20 meters in width, divided into eight sections and carrying nineteen people in total: sixteen rowers, one signal leader, one helmsman, and one person responsible for bailing water.

On the main commemoration day (the twelfth day of the third lunar month), villagers of Ngoc Chan together with fishermen from many places gather at the riverside racing ground to attend the festival. Before the competition begins, the boat teams dress neatly and carry their paddles on their shoulders, walking in pairs to perform a ritual in honor of the deity. After the ceremony, the sound of horns signals the start, and the two racing boats launch swiftly into the water.

The boat race at the temple is different from other competitions. In addition to speed and strength, skill and fairness are also emphasized. If a boat capsizes, the opposing team must wait until everyone returns to the boat before continuing the race. During the race, the participants on the boats follow the commands of the helmsman, while spectators on the riverbank cheer enthusiastically.

The race consists of three rounds, each about two kilometers long. At the end of the competition, prizes are awarded to encourage the participating teams.

The boat racing competition in the traditional festival of Ngoc Chan Temple is a unique form of folk cultural activity with many meanings. Through this event, villagers have the opportunity to remember the contributions of General Dang Dung, relive a heroic period of resistance against foreign invaders, and cherish the values and achievements left by their ancestors. The Ngoc Chan Temple festival thus remains a cultural beauty of a rural area in the Red River Delta.

Temple Ngoc Chan

(Den Ngoc Chan)
