Geographical location

The communal house and pagoda of Dang Village are located in Dang Hamlet, Dang Xa Commune, Hanoi.

The communal house (Dinh Dang) is dedicated to the deity Doc Cuoc. It stands on a spacious plot of land within the residential area of the village.

History

Based on three royal decrees (sac phong) preserved at the site — dated to the 5th year of Duy Tan (1911), the 2nd year of Khai Dinh (1917), and the 9th year of Khai Dinh (1924) — all clearly inscribed:

“Sac Bac Ninh Tinh, Gia Lam huyen, Dang Xa xa, Dang Thon, phung su Doc Cuoc…”

(“Royal decree to Bac Ninh Province, Gia Lam District, Dang Xa Commune, Dang Village — in worship of the deity Doc Cuoc…”)

Architecture

In front of the pagoda lies a pond and a spacious courtyard. The heritage complex is laid out in the shape of the character “Đinh” (丁), comprising a seven-compartment great communal hall (Dai Dinh). The building is made of brick with gable-end walls (bit doc), and roofed with traditional Vietnamese tiles (ngoi ta). The wooden frame follows a unified “beam-truss” (vi keo qua giang) structure, planed smooth and tightly joined. The floor is elevated about 40 cm above the courtyard, and the front façade opens with rectangular doorways.

Inside, three right compartments serve as the sanctuary for the village’s tutelary deity. At the center stands a large incense altar intricately carved with motifs of dragons in adoration, water waves, and floral scrolls. Against the rear wall is a high platform supporting a shrine (kham tho) that houses the deity’s throne and worship tablet.

Dang Village Pagoda consists of four compartments with a wooden frame similar to that of the communal house. The two rear compartments have brick platforms built along the back wall, where the Buddha statues are enshrined. At the top and center sits the statue of Amitabha Buddha (A Di Da), flanked by two attendant statues. Below is the Cuu Long (Nine Dragons) pedestal with the statue of the infant Shakyamuni Buddha. Along the rear wall are statues of Thien Hien (Saintly Scholars) and Duc Ong (the Guardian).

Acknowledgment

The communal house and pagoda of Dang Village have been recorded in the local historical archives.

It is a heritage site deserving investment and restoration from both the authorities and local people to preserve its beauty and function as a cultural and spiritual center for the entire community.

« Sac Bac Ninh Tinh, Gia Lam huyen, Dang Xa xa, Dang Thon, phung su Doc Cuoc… »
