Bac Le Temple Festival
Time
From the 18th to the 20th day of the 9th lunar month
Location
Bac Le Temple is located in Tan Thanh commune, Huu Lung district.
History and Relics
Bac Le Temple was originally established around the 16th–17th centuries and has undergone five phases of restoration and renovation up to the present day. Despite many historical upheavals, the temple has preserved clear features of traditional architecture, representative of the system of ancient temples and shrines in northern Vietnam.
According to the content of a stele inscription dated the 4th year of the Khai Dinh reign (1919), the temple was initially only a small hermitage used for worship and was frequently damaged by fires. In 1919, thanks to the merit contributions of several spirit mediums, the temple was rebuilt into a three-bay structure comprising three worship halls: the First Hall, Second Hall, and Third Hall. Another stele inscription from the 8th year of Khai Dinh (1933) continued to record the contributions of many individuals during the second major restoration. From that time, the temple was believed to become increasingly sacred, attracting a growing number of devotees.
In 1940, the temple underwent a third restoration on a larger scale. The old three-bay main hall was reoriented along a horizontal axis, while an additional Third Hall was constructed at the rear along with the First Hall. A spacious and imposing triple-arched gate (tam quan) was also erected at the site of the current front steps. After this restoration, Bac Le Temple became more dignified and spacious, serving as an important spiritual destination for local people and visitors. However, in 1968, wartime bombing caused severe damage, nearly destroying the entire temple and burying or dispersing many valuable relics.
In 1973, the temple was restored for the fourth time, but due to limited conditions, only the three main worship halls could be reconstructed, while auxiliary buildings such as the guest house could not yet be rebuilt. In 1989, the temple underwent further repairs and upgrades. Since then, it has been regularly preserved and reinforced, gradually forming the relatively complete appearance seen today.
In terms of architecture and fine arts, Bac Le Temple reflects a fusion between Chinese architectural–sculptural art and the traditional Vietnamese practices of temple construction and worship. This combination is clearly expressed through the system of columns, horizontal lacquered boards, signboards, ceilings, and roofs, as well as decorative inscriptions on the roof ridges. Together, these elements create an ancient, solemn beauty and a warm yet sacred spiritual atmosphere.
The approach to the worship space begins at the grand triple gate, which creates a solemn impression for the entire complex. From the gate, on the left side is the Chau Be Shrine, where statues of Chau Be, Co Be Bac Le, and Cau Be Bac Le are worshipped, with a worship area of approximately 10 square meters. In the northeastern area of the shrine, an outdoor altar to the Five Tiger Deities is arranged, contributing to the completeness of the religious space.
The main temple complex is designed in the form of a three-bay house comprising three halls: the First Hall, Second Hall, and Third Hall (the inner sanctuary). The structure follows the Dinh-shaped architectural layout, in which the front ceremonial hall is connected to the rear sanctuary, forming a compact composition that is both majestic and tranquil. The entire temple is a three-bay brick building roofed with Western-style tiles, covering an area of about 125 square meters, with a structural system supported by wooden columns.
The temple roof is shaped in the style known as “Long trieu luong nghi,” symbolizing heaven and earth, yin and yang, and reflecting the traditional concept of cosmic harmony. The main worship hall is divided into five bays, of which the three outer bays are dedicated to the Five Venerable Mandarins. Hanging above the altar is a horizontal board bearing the four characters “Hung Tien Hien Tu,” expressing reverence for sacred beings and ancestors.
Beyond its architectural value, Bac Le Temple preserves numerous ancient artifacts and relics dating back hundreds of years, bearing distinctive historical and cultural significance. Notable among these are finely carved horizontal boards and parallel sentences, along with an exquisitely crafted and elaborately decorated system of worship statues.
At present, the temple houses a total of 19 wooden statues of various sizes. The altars and ritual objects are also made from precious types of wood. The system of beams and rafters is decorated with traditional motifs, among which the image of the python appears as a characteristic element of Vietnamese folk belief culture.
With its outstanding historical, religious, and architectural–artistic values, Bac Le Temple was officially recognized by the State as a historical and cultural monument in 1992.
Bac Le Temple Festival
The main festival of Bac Le Temple is held annually on the 20th day of the 9th lunar month. It is one of the most representative folk belief festivals of the Northeast region, attracting thousands of local residents and visitors from all over the country to perform rituals, pay homage, and participate in cultural activities. The festival is not only an occasion to express reverence toward Thanh Mau Thuong Ngan but also a space of cultural and religious life with special significance in the spiritual world of the local community.
The ritual section plays a central role and is conducted solemnly in accordance with the traditional rites of the Mother Goddess worship belief. The opening ceremony is the throne-cleansing ritual, in which sacred spring water from the Bac Le Temple area is respectfully brought to cleanse the statue of Mau De Nhat Thuong Ngan and the throne of Duc Vua Cha Ngoc Hoang. This ritual symbolizes purification and expresses reverence while praying for protection and blessings from the deities for the community. Following this is the main offering ceremony, the most important sacrificial ritual of the festival day. Offerings typically include the “three living offerings” (pig, chicken, and fish) presented to the Cong Dong altar and the altar of the Five Venerable Lords. In addition, vegetarian or meat offerings are made to the Mother Goddess, along with various votive paper objects such as elephants, horses, boats, hats, and human figures, symbolizing abundance, prosperity, and sincere devotion.
After the sacrificial rites comes the procession of the Mother Goddess to attend the festival, conducted in a solemn yet vibrant atmosphere, blending the sounds of gongs, drums, and folk melodies. The procession departs from Bac Le Temple and proceeds to Deo Keng Temple—a site closely linked in terms of belief and history—to perform an incense-offering ritual. It then returns in procession to the main temple for the grand ceremonial sacrifice. Throughout this process, many other important rituals also take place, such as the opening of the temple gates, the erection of the ceremonial bamboo pole, the welcoming of the deities, ritual registration, offerings to Buddha and the Saints, the grand feast for Son Trang, and the invocation of Chau Be. Together, these rites form a continuous and integrated ritual system that vividly reflects the ceremonial structure of Vietnamese Mother Goddess worship.
Alongside the solemn rituals, the festive section unfolds in a lively manner, rich in folk cultural color. Cultural performances, community exchanges, chầu văn singing, and sanh tien dancing in brilliantly colored costumes are held throughout the festival period, creating a joyful atmosphere, strengthening community bonds, and meeting the spiritual and cultural needs of participants. This festive component not only enriches the overall celebration but also helps preserve and promote traditional local art forms.
In the consciousness of local residents, the Bac Le Temple Festival is regarded as a “great New Year” of the year. Over hundreds of years of existence and development, the festival has become a major center of cultural and religious life, contributing to the strengthening of community identity, the enrichment of spiritual life, and providing impetus for local economic and tourism development. Along with its distinctive historical and cultural values, Bac Le Temple and its associated festival have today become a familiar pilgrimage destination for people from all regions of the country, expressing sincere and pure faith in the Immortals and the Mother Goddess—the sacred Mother figure of the Vietnamese nation. It is precisely this combination of values that has established the position of the Bac Le Temple Festival as one of the most representative and renowned belief festivals in Vietnam today.

Fete du temple Den Bac Le
Periode
Du 18 au 20 du neuvieme mois lunaire
Lieu
(Den Bac Le)
(Le hoi Den Bac Le)
